    • Awarded to Canadian women studying to become commercial pilots or aircraft maintenance engineers
    • Four aspiring commercial pilots become CAE Women in Flight ambassadors

MONTRÉAL, March 06, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Air Canada and CAE, two of Canada’s premiere aerospace companies headquartered in Montréal, are pleased to announce today the eight recipients of the seventh edition of the Air Canada and CAE Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship.

Air Canada and CAE Announce Eight Recipients of the Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship

Each year, up to eight Canadian women studying to become commercial pilots or aircraft maintenance engineers are awarded scholarships to pursue their training. Of these recipients, four aspiring commercial pilots will join the CAE Women in Flight program as ambassadors.

“Each year, the Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship allows us to witness the incredible talent, perseverance, and passion of women who are shaping the future of aviation in Canada. This year’s recipients stand out not only for their academic excellence and technical skill, but for the leadership and mentorship they demonstrate within their communities,” said Arielle Meloul-Wechsler, Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer and Public Affairs at Air Canada. “Their achievements embody the very spirit of this scholarship – honouring Captain Judy Cameron’s trailblazing legacy while empowering the next generation of women to pursue careers as commercial pilots and aircraft maintenance engineers. We are proud to support their journeys and remain deeply committed to advancing gender parity in STEM and technical aviation careers.”

“Today, women still represent just about five percent of commercial pilots worldwide. CAE is proud to once again support the Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship, an initiative that plays a meaningful role in encouraging more women to pursue careers in aviation and inspire the next generation. This year’s recipients reflect the talent and determination that will help shape the future of our industry, and we are honoured to fuel their aspirations and support their path,” said Marie-Christine Cloutier, Vice President, Strategy & Marketing. “Four of the recipients will become CAE Women in Flight ambassadors to serve as role models, promoting diversity in aviation and inspiring other women to follow in their footsteps.”

“Air Canada launched the Captain Judy Cameron scholarship program seven years ago, and it has been truly inspiring to celebrate the remarkable achievements of past recipients as they go on to become flight instructors, medevac pilots, and First Officers at major airlines,” said Judy Cameron, Boeing 777 Captain at Air Canada (retired), and Director, Northern Lights Aero Foundation. “The 2026 recipients exemplify excellence, not only in their own training, but in the way they actively uplift and encourage other women in their aviation journeys. I am incredibly proud of CAE and Air Canada’s continued commitment to advancing women in aviation through its partnership with the Northern Lights Aero Foundation.”

The Air Canada recipients for 2026 are:

    • Faith Mulholland of Eden Mills, Ontario
    • Afrah Khan from Edmonton, Alberta
    • Aymie Rioux from St. Germain, Québec
    • Kesaia Bruni from Mississauga, Ontario

The following individuals will join the CAE Women in Flight Program:

    • Katelyn Flear of Caledonia, Ontario
    • Madison Crane from Etobicoke, Ontario
    • Sophia Hutchcroft of Calgary, Alberta
    • Natasha Razzak from Sherwood Park, Alberta

The annual Captain Judy Cameron Scholarships, established in honour of Air Canada’s first female pilot to help foster the next generation of women following in her trailblazing footsteps, are awarded in conjunction with the Northern Lights Aero Foundation.

The Captain Judy Cameron scholarships were introduced in 2019 and initially awarded to four recipients. In 2023, Air Canada and CAE joined forces to double the number of scholarships, awarding a total of eight to eligible students.

    About Judy Cameron

Judy Cameron became the first female pilot hired by Air Canada, Canada’s largest airline, in April 1978 at the age of 23. She was the first woman to graduate from Selkirk College’s Aviation Technology Program in 1975. Throughout her flying career of 40 years and over 23,000 hours, she has flown the DC-3, Twin Otter, Hawker Siddeley 748, DC-9, Lockheed 1011, Airbus 320, Boeing 767 and Boeing 777 to the far corners of the world. She became a captain in 1997 and in 2010, she became the first female captain in Canada of a Boeing 777, the largest aircraft in Air Canada’s fleet. She retired in 2015, received the Elsie MacGill Northern Lights award in the Flight Operations category that year, and in 2016 she was chosen by the 99s (International Organization of Women Pilots) to be on its Canadian postage stamp. Today, Captain Cameron continues her volunteer work mentoring and supporting the next generation of female pilots with the Northern Lights Aero Foundation.

About CAE Women in Flight Ambassador Program

CAE’s Women in Flight Ambassador program is helping create a movement to encourage young girls and women to dream big and have no limits. As only five percent of pilots worldwide are women, this program is geared to show women that they too can reach for the sky. The goal of the program is to build a community of ambassadors who demonstrate leadership skills, active involvement in their communities, perseverance, who are passionate about aviation, and inspire women to join the pilot profession.

Launched in 2018, the Women in Flight Ambassador program was expanded in July 2022 to include partnerships with more airline customers to increase the number of scholarships given. This is a co-branded program in which CAE is partnering with airline customers globally to create women pilot ambassadors via scholarships ranging from partially funded to fully funded pilot training.

This fleet transition will allow most customers flying Rouge leisure and sun routes across North America and the Caribbean to enjoy upgraded interiors, including personal seatback entertainment, reclining seats and complimentary Fast, Free Wi-Fi sponsored by Bell.

“When customers step onto our aircraft, they should instantly feel a sense of comfort, care, and pride,” said Mark Nasr, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer at Air Canada. “Supported by award-winning service from co-workers across the company, this renewal program is about delivering that feeling consistently, across every flight. To support this leisure-focused growth, Air Canada has opened a new Rouge crew base in Vancouver, coinciding with the entry into service of the first Rouge Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. This investment directly supports more sun and leisure flying from Western Canada, such as the recently announced return of winter service from Calgary to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.

Bringing More Comfort to Air Canada Rouge

Customers flying Rouge will enjoy free wine, beer – including non-alcoholic beer – and Canadian-made premium snacks on all North American and Caribbean flights. The in-flight menus showcase beloved Canadian brands, for an elevated in-flight experience tailored to a range of tastes, including Canadian favourites like MadeGood Morning Bars (on flights before 10 a.m.), TWIGZ pretzels, and Leclerc Célébration cookies.

Improvements to the Rouge fleet focus on what matters most to customers on shorter trips: an upgraded cabin, improved technology, and small details to make the journey easier and more comfortable. The cabins are configured to give customers a choice of 12 Business Class seats, 18 Preferred seats offering extra space, and 147 Standard Economy seats.

    Modernizing the North American Fleet

The transformation extends across the entire network. Air Canada’s Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, currently operated by Rouge, will be retrofitted to Air Canada’s latest design standard, as the airline also prepares for the introduction of new, longer-range Airbus A321XLR aircraft. Upgrades to the customer experience also extend to regional travel, with Air Canada Express aircraft operated by Jazz to be fitted with new cabins and next generation Fast, Free Wi-Fi.

    Upcoming Additions to the Fleet

As part of its ongoing fleet modernization program, Air Canada recently announced an order for eight Airbus A350-1000s. This is in addition to the 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners expected to start entering service later this year. Air Canada is also set to welcome in the coming months the first of its 30 Airbus A321XLRs, while continuing to take deliveries of the Canadian-built Airbus A220, with 23 aircraft remaining on its firm order of 65.

These aircraft will enter service with Air Canada’s next generation cabin design and standards, including improved connectivity and in-flight entertainment offerings.

    Major Assumptions

Air Canada made assumptions in providing its guidance—including a modest Canadian GDP growth for 2026. Air Canada assumes that the Canadian dollar will trade, on average, at C$1.36 per US dollar for the full year 2026 and that the price of jet fuel will average C$0.90 per liter for the full year 2026.

Air Canada has entered into non-binding letters for up to $2 billion in sale and leaseback transactions scheduled to close in 2026 and 2027, subject to the execution of definitive and binding agreements and completion of standard conditions precedent. Air Canada’s guidance constitutes forward-looking information within the meaning of applicable securities laws and is subject to important risks and uncertainties, including in relation to statements or actions by governments and uncertainty relating to the imposition of (or threats to impose) tariffs on Canadian exports or imports and their resulting impacts on the Canadian, North American and global economies and travel demand. The airline will welcome eight aircraft to its fleet, and has rights to purchase eight other A350-1000s, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the second half of 2030.

“Air Canada’s acquisition of the Airbus A350-1000 will further solidify our position as a leading global airline through the next decade. This state-of-the-art aircraft adds a new dimension to Air Canada’s long-haul capabilities, with impressive range, enhanced payload, and proven economics that unlock new possibilities for long-haul flying for our customers,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, and President of Cargo at Air Canada. “These highly capable aircraft complement our existing fleet by providing flexibility in support of a growing, resilient, and diversified future network. The Airbus A350-1000 will play a central role in defining Air Canada’s next era, connecting our customers, our hubs, and our country to the world.”

“The addition of the Airbus A350-1000 to our fleet is a forward-looking investment that strengthens Air Canada’s long-term cost efficiency,” said John Di Bert, Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, Air Canada. “These aircraft will deliver improved operating economics, enhance our operational reliability, and ensure we remain competitive across our global network. The aircraft’s lighter materials and advanced engines deliver meaningful fuel-burn improvements versus the aircraft they replace, supporting our financial and environmental objectives. This order is another step in the modernization of our fleet and is aligned with our capital allocation priorities and our target to maintain capital investments at or below 12 per cent of revenues.”

Powered by the XWB97 engine from Rolls Royce and fabricated using lighter weight materials, it is estimated the aircraft will deliver up to a 25 per cent fuel consumption reduction compared to the previous generation aircraft, as estimated by Airbus. The A350-1000 has a potential range of approximately 9,000 nautical miles.

According to Airbus, customers will experience the quietest twin-aisle cabin available. It is designed to be pressurized to only 6,000 feet to reduce stress on the body, minimize jet lag and deliver a noticeably more comfortable travel experience. The A350-1000 will come equipped with the latest generation in-flight entertainment screens and connectivity, as well as Air Canada’s new cabin standard, which is being introduced later this year.

    Fleet Modernization

The order for eight A350-1000s is in addition to the 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners expected to start entering service later this year. Air Canada is also set to welcome in the coming months the first of its 30 Airbus A321XLRs. Air Canada also continues to take deliveries of the Canadian-assembled Airbus A220, with 23 aircraft remaining on its firm order of 65. An additional five Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, on lease, are expected to service in 2026.

These aircraft will enter service with Air Canada’s next generation cabin design and standard, including enhanced connectivity and in-flight entertainment offerings.

  • Black History Month: Air Canada Celebrates Black Youth Journeys – Past, Present, and Future

    11 February 2026

Each February, Black History Month invites us to honour the stories, achievements, and contributions of Black communities across Canada. At Air Canada, this moment is more than a commemoration, it is a continuation of our commitment to uplifting Black youth, amplifying representation, and creating pathways that help the next generation soar.

This year, we partnered with the Pinball Foundation, co-founded 20 years ago by Michael “Pinball” Clemons and his wife, Diane, to celebrate the journeys of Black youth. Their stories reflect resilience, innovation, and courage, and inspire us to continue shaping a more inclusive, accessible future in aviation and beyond.

Earlier this month, a group of Black youth, business and community leaders embarked on a special one-day journey aboard an Air Canada aircraft – featuring an all-black crew of two pilots and three flight attendants – and travelled from Toronto to Halifax, where they visited the historic Pier 21. Called “Legacy Lift-Off”, the attendees walked in the footsteps of Black Canadian history in a place that welcomed thousands of newcomers, and also learned of the challenges and struggles the community endured.

Stories of the community’s history from Africville elders, Africville Museum Director Juanita Peters, as well as Clemons and his wife, Diane educated and inspired a room filled with business and community leaders, as well as students that are supported by the Pinball Foundation’s work.

“Black History Month is an opportunity to honour the resilience, achievement, and leadership of Black communities across Canada, and to reflect on the shared responsibility we all have in building a more inclusive future. At Air Canada, we believe deeply in the power of possibility, especially when young people can see their potential reflected at them,” said Arielle Meloul-Wechsler, Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer and Public Affairs at Air Canada. “We are proud to stand alongside the Pinball Foundation to help create pathways that empower Black youth to pursue horizons they may once have only imagined. This month, and every month, we remain committed to supporting that future leaders in aviation and beyond can rise with confidence, purpose, and pride. Their stories are Canada’s future, and we are honoured to help them take flight.”

“Legacy Lift-Off was a powerful day dedicated to learning about Canada’s history and the untold stories of Africville. From the moment we gathered at Gate D33, the energy was palpable. Air Canada welcomed us onboard with an all-Black flight crew – an intentional act of representation that resonated deeply, particularly with our youth. The theme of intentionality permeated throughout this day of reflection and fellowship. Guided by Africville elders, we listened, learned, and honoured the past while envisioning the future; a future where under-resourced youth are supported through access to education, mentorship, and employment opportunities,” said Michael Clemons.

“Most importantly, Legacy Lift-Off reminded us that Black history is Canadian history. We are incredibly proud and grateful to partner with Air Canada on this unique and unforgettable experience, where we reinforced our commitment to youth, and had the privilege of showing young people that their dreams truly can take flight.”

Air Canada’s collaboration with the Pinball Foundation aligns with our long‑standing belief that representation makes a difference – in our workplaces, our flight decks, our maintenance hangars, our customer-facing teams, and throughout the communities we serve. By investing in youth today, Air Canada is helping to create opportunities for Black youth to dream big, take flight, and pursue futures filled with purpose and potential is more than a sponsorship, it is a shared mission to create transformational outcomes for young people.
