  • Air Canada’s network set for growth with impending arrival of Airbus A321XLR

Air Canada’s network planning team has been eagerly anticipating the arrival into its fleet of the airline’s first Airbus A321XLR, which will bring with it opportunities to open new markets.

For years, the team has been poring over data to determine the best way to deploy this game-changing aircraft. And now, with first delivery on the horizon, it is no longer just a paper exercise, said Alexandre Lefevre, Vice President, Network Planning – North America and Scheduling at Air Canada.

“Next year we going to finally get our hands on that new aircraft. And it’s going to open up a range of new possibilities, new routes, new markets for Air Canada. We’re really excited and it’s a big deal for us that will herald a new era of international growth for Air Canada,” he said.

“We’re going to see them starting in 2026 and, as any new aircraft, we’re going to have some testing and certification going on in the early months of 2026. But you can expect them to be in full commercial service by next summer.”

Last month, Air Canada announced the first new route that the A321XLR will allow it to open, marking the start of its new era of growth. Palma de Mallorca, a Spanish island in the Mediterranean, will join Air Canada’s network in June 2026. The A321XLR will also be seen on routes like Toulouse, Dublin and Edinburgh, all out of Montréal, next summer.

There are many factors that go into determining where an airline flies and which aircraft to use. At the end of the day, it requires a delicate balancing of range, demand and economics.

“When you look at opening new routes, you need to look at the economics. When you’ve got a tool like the A321XLR that’s completely different from the tools you’ve got in your toolbox today, that opens up new markets that today you cannot viably and profitably open,” Lefevre said.

“The A321XLR will be used to replace some older aircraft, but our strategy is to use it for growth, especially international growth. With the size, range and the capabilities of this aircraft, we’re going to be able to, first and foremost, fly new international markets and maintain a presence year-round when demand is not sufficient to operate the route profitably with a larger aircraft.”

While the A321XLR will be used to develop new international markets or maintain them in the shoulder season, Canadian travellers flying domestically or within North America will also be able to enjoy the modern new aircraft and its new interior.

“For us, the A321XLR is not a single trick aircraft. It’s a very versatile machine that can go international, but it can also operate a domestic transcontinental route. So you’re going to have this experience of lie-flat seats on a narrowbody between Toronto, Montreal and the west coast of Canada, for example,” Lefevre added.

Some of the advantages of the A321XLR are a longer range thanks to the larger fuel tank and an all-new cabin, including the larger overhead XL bins from Airbus.

“This also allows us to be more efficient by having faster turnaround times and getting the aircraft back in the air, because it’s meant to fly, not to be on the ground. A faster, more efficient boarding process will improve the customer experience and ensure on-time departures.”

The A321XLR will be the launch platform for many of the new features that customers will see across the Air Canada fleet. It’s going to come with a new look and feel in the cabin, and that is something that will be rolled out across the entire Air Canada fleet.

  • Aeroplan’s Annual Points Matching Week to Help Children and Their Families Flying for Essential Hospital Care Launches Today

    • Aeroplan Points Matching Week is October 6-12, 2025
    • Aeroplan Points donated to the Air Canada Foundation for its Hospital Transportation Program will be matched by Aeroplan and its partners TD, CIBC and Amex up to 10 million points each
    • The Hospital Transportation Program provides transportation for children who require air travel for medical care and treatment not available within their community

MONTRÉAL, Oct. 6, 2025 /CNW/ – Aeroplan Points Matching Week in support of the Air Canada Foundation Hospital Transportation Program began today and will run until October 12, 2025. The program operates on the generous donations from Aeroplan Members to provide relief for families across Canada whose children need to travel for medical care and treatment.

During Aeroplan Points Matching Week, Aeroplan and its partners, TD, CIBC, and American Express are joining forces to match Aeroplan Points donated by Aeroplan Members. For each point an Aeroplan Member donates, the respective partner will contribute one additional point, up to a maximum of 10 million points per partner. With Aeroplan also matching, the member’s donation will have triple the impact up to a maximum of 10 million points. The goal is to collectively raise the most amount of air travel support for children facing medical adversity.

Last year, Aeroplan partners TD and CIBC matched donations from Aeroplan Members, helping the Air Canada Foundation reach an incredible 47 million points, which were later donated to pediatric hospitals across Canada through the Hospital Transportation Program.

“Families come to us from every province in Canada, and for many, specialized care is simply not available in their home communities. The Hospital Transportation Program is a vital partner in making that care accessible. For more than 20 years, this program has lifted a huge financial burden for families who otherwise could not afford repeated round trips for their child’s treatment. Their support has made an immeasurable difference in the lives of our patients and their loved ones,” says Kelly Thorstad, Acting Administrator of Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada.

“The Aeroplan Points Matching Week continues to be one of the most impactful initiatives for the Hospital Transportation Program,” said Valérie Durand, spokesperson for the Air Canada Foundation. “This is an opportunity for everyone to make a lasting difference in the lives of so many families and children, and we are enormously grateful to Aeroplan Members and our partners for their generosity year after year.”

    Hospital Transportation Program in Action

The program benefits children like Maddox. Shortly after birth, doctors discovered Maddox had multiple unexplained fractures from a rare genetic disorder that causes bones to be fragile and break easily. This marked the beginning of Maddox and her family’s journey toward answers, strength, and resilience.

Thanks to the Air Canada Foundation’s Hospital Transportation Program, Maddox and her family are able to travel from her hometown of Cape Breton to Montréal to receive the specialized care she needs from an internationally recognized team at Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada, known for treating rare and complex bone diseases.

The support received over the years has made it possible for Maddox to access critical surgeries and treatments that have made a meaningful difference in her day-to-day life. Today, her spirit shines brightly, and her story is one of hope, strength and the power of community.

    About the Hospital Transportation Program

The annual Aeroplan Points Matching Week initiative is the largest annual fundraiser for the Air Canada Foundation’s Hospital Transportation Program. Here is how it helps children and their families access medical care:

    • Points donated go toward providing patients and a parent or guardian with flights with Air Canada and its partner airlines.
    • Created in 2003, the Hospital Transportation Program works with Canada’s Children’s Hospital Foundations (CCHF) supporting the following pediatric hospitals across Canada: BC Children’s Hospital (BC), Alberta Children’s Hospital (AB), Stollery Children’s Hospital (AB), Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (SK), HSC Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg (MB), Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre (ON), McMaster Children’s Hospital (ON), CHEO (ON), The Hospital for Sick Children (ON), The Montreal Children’s Hospital (QC), CHU Sainte-Justine hospital (QC), CHU de Québec (QC), IWK Health (Maritime Provinces), and the Janeway Children’s Hospital (NL).
    • The program also supports Shriners Hospitals for Children (QC), and the David Foster Foundation.
    • In 2024, 129 children and their families were assisted with 379 flights via the Hospital Transportation Program.

  • In our stylish era(s): A history in Air Canada fashion

    3 October 2025

The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX), in partnership with the Professional Clothing Industry Association Worldwide (PCIAW), recently held its first ever PCIAW Fashion Show at the APEX/IFSA Global EXPO 2025 in Long Beach. A team of Air Canada employees took this opportunity to give everyone a glimpse of the airline’s long history by showcasing its uniforms throughout the years. This curated runway event highlighted six different eras in Air Canada’s history: 1938, 1953-1964, 1969-1973, 1996-2004 and 2017 to present. Representing each era were Air Canada’s Los Angeles-based employees as well as Montreal based flight attendants.

    1938: First era

How does it feel wearing the very first flight attendant uniform? “It’s such an honour because it carries so much history. If I had to pick favourites, this one and the blue uniform stand out to me. They’re feminine, elegant, and beautifully detailed. It was a joy to wear!” Although very fashionable, this version of the uniform is the shortest lived in Air Canada/TCA’s history and only lasted from July to October 1938. It was replaced with a similar design; a summer grey version and a winter blue version starting that October until 1949.

Representing Trans-Canada Airline (TCA), as Air Canada was known when it was founded in 1937, Kerem walked down the runway proudly showcasing the very first page in Air Canada’s fashion history. “I truly love how fashionable, comfortable, and professional it feels.”

    1953-1964: Blue era?

This Christian Dior-influenced design had a summer version (pictured) and a navy-blue version for the winter season.

Amber proudly represented our … blue era. How did Amber feel about the blue? “I just loved the blue uniform! It was comfortable from the minute I put it on, and its tailored fit really made it stylish.” Her favourite part of it? “The hat may have been my favourite part of this uniform, it truly added the final touch!”

    1969-1973: Colorful era

Designed by Leo Chevalier, a Québec trailblazing fashion designer, this version of uniforms from the early 70s was definitely Air Canada’s most colourful era – and a visual representation of the seventies cultural era! What did Silvia think of the uniform she modelled? “It was great but wouldn’t want to wear it today!” It was very much of its time, indeed. “I preferred the one Vanessa wore (1973-1978), it seemed very comfortable, more casual but still elegant.”

After the initial launch in 1969, an important milestone is the introduction of pants! It was the first time in Air Canada’s history that pants were included in the uniform.

    1973-1978: Versatile era

Vanessa’s impression of the fashion show? “Walking the runway in such an iconic uniform was definitely the highlight! I felt proud showing off a piece of Air Canada history.” Coincidentally, the pieces she was wearing were also presented and introduced at a fashion show in Vancouver in May 1978. Cosplaying the 70s, Vanessa got to model the most versatile version of our uniforms.

Employees back then could choose from over 50 pieces of uniform, mix and match and make it their own. The list included a long-sleeved and short-sleeved jacket, five different skirts, two pairs of pants, two sweaters and four different blouses. To accessorize, they had a belt, scarves, berets, toques, folding umbrellas, leather bags and … a rainhat!

    1996-2004: Modern-trend era

This new version debuted at the “New Uniform Fashion Show” on January 29, 1996. What makes this one special? It marked the first time the uniforms of all Air Canada employees changed simultaneously.

    2017-present: True-to-brand era

And finally, our current uniform! Imagined by Canadian designer Christopher Bates, it was recognized with a few awards including the NAUMD 2018 Best of the Best Award for Outstanding Uniform Design and the PCIAW 2018 Award for Outstanding Corporate Design. How was it for Veronique to represent her own uniform in the fashion show? “Walking to the stage representing the actual Air Canada uniform, it was an honour for me. This was a wonderful and fulfilling experience.”

These weren’t just uniforms. They were symbols of adventure, ambition and grace. Each look carried the legacy of those who wore them with pride. The show was a celebration of history, of fashion, and of the people who made it iconic. To bring them out of the archives was a very special moment for everyone involved and it was an important one: Because some symbols deserve to be remembered forever.

  • Air Canada Provides Third Quarter 2025 Estimated Results and Updated Full Year 2025 Guidance

MONTRÉAL, Sept. 24, 2025 /CNW/ – Air Canada today provided certain estimated results for the third quarter of 2025 and updated full year 2025 guidance, which was suspended in August 2025. Air Canada also provided an estimate of the financial impact of the labour disruption in August by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the union representing cabin crew.

    Q3 2025 Estimated Results

Air Canada anticipates, for the quarter ending September 30, 2025:

    • Operated capacity to decline by approximately 2% from the same period in 2024 as a result of the cancellation of more than 3,200 flights;
    • Operating income between $250 million and $300 million, which includes approximately $175 million from one-time non-cash pension plan amendments and other labour related charges and adjusted EBITDA between $950 million and $1 billion. Air Canada’s operating income totalled $1.040 billion and adjusted EBITDA $1.523 billion for the third quarter of 2024.

    Labour Disruption Impacts

During the collective bargaining period with CUPE, Air Canada developed comprehensive plans to ensure the safe and orderly wind down and restart of its operations in the event of a labour disruption. When CUPE gave notice of its intent to strike, Air Canada acted on these contingency plans and ultimately cancelled over 3,200 flights in August 2025.

Financial impact. The financial impact of the labour disruption, which included an unlawful strike, is estimated to be $375 million in operating income and adjusted EBITDA. This amount is derived from the combination of three components. First, the revenue impact is estimated to be $430 million, mainly due to refunds issued to customers, customer compensation and lower than expected travel bookings in August and early September. Second, $145 million in costs are estimated to have been avoided due to less flying activity, largely attributable to lower fuel expenses. Third, the cost avoidance was partially offset by an estimated $90 million of incremental costs associated with reimbursements to customers for out-of-pocket expenses and labour-related operating costs.

Affected customers. Air Canada deeply regrets the impact of the disruption on its customers and remains committed to resolving every claim submitted by affected customers quickly and accurately, having done so for more than 60,000 claims to date. Air Canada continues to update its progress and to provide information on its goodwill policies at the dashboard available at www.aircanada.com/action.

Arbitration with CUPE. Air Canada and CUPE are proceeding to arbitration to finalize the wage portion of the four-year tentative agreement. No labour disruption can be initiated by either party during the arbitration process or the term of the new agreement.

    Updated Full Year 2025 Outlook

Air Canada is restoring and updating its full year 2025 financial and capacity guidance to reflect the financial and operational impact of the CUPE labour disruption and its expectations for the remainder of 2025, as follows:

    MetricUpdated 2025 GuidancePrior 2025 Guidance

“Air Canada continues to solidify its leadership serving our country’s capital and we are excited to keep Ottawa connected to one of the world’s most important global gateways all year long. Customers travelling for business, corporate and leisure from the National Capital Region and abroad will enjoy the ease and convenience of international travel options to and from Ottawa. We can’t wait to welcome you onboard our London flights this winter and beyond,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer, and President of Cargo, at Air Canada.

“In today’s global landscape, strong connections between Canada’s Capital Region and strategic markets like the United Kingdom are more vital than ever. Air Canada’s decision to extend its YOW-LHR service through the winter is great news – it reflects the airline’s confidence in our region, its deep commitment to Ottawa–Gatineau, and its role as a leading international carrier” said Susan Margles, President and CEO, Ottawa International Airport Authority. “This move is a win for travellers, businesses, and our entire community.”

“Air Canada’s expanded network is more than new destinations — it’s about strengthening Canada’s connections to the world. Most Canadian air cargo travels in the belly of passenger planes, which means every new route also opens a new trade corridor for Canadian goods. The extension of the Ottawa–London service will give Canadian businesses faster and more reliable access to the UK and Europe, supporting our exporters, driving investment, and creating good jobs here at home. Stronger connectivity in the skies means stronger growth on the ground — and ensures Canada remains a leader in the global economy,” stated The Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade.

“I am delighted that service from Ottawa to London Heathrow will now be available year-round. I regularly hear from business leaders and residents that we need more direct links to Ottawa. The connection to London has been very successful and well-received. Expanding to year-round service will enhance Ottawa’s success as both a business and visitor destination. It strengthens our connection to the world, supports economic growth, and makes our city even more accessible as a place to visit, live, and invest in,” said Mark Sutcliffe, Mayor of Ottawa.

“With the strength tourism has shown throughout the summer months helping to set the foundation going into the colder season, Air Canada’s extension of the Heathrow to Ottawa route for the winter is a tangible signal of confidence in Ottawa as a year-round destination,” said Michael Crockatt, President and CEO of Ottawa Tourism. “This continued service ensures vital connectivity with our top overseas market. We appreciate Air Canada’s commitment and confidence, and we remain focused on supporting this route through proactive marketing and by offering an appealing destination for all visitors.”

Our newest Ottawa routes will connect the National Capital Region to two expanding areas in New Brunswick – its capital city, Fredericton, and Moncton, the province’s largest urban and fastest growing area.
