  • Canadian North Enhances Baggage Policy to Improve Safety, Efficiency and Comfort

    15 May 2024

For tickets issued on or after May 29, 2024

Ensuring our customers and their cargo arrive safely at their destination is the cornerstone of Canadian North customer service. With the resurgence of travel and heightened demand, we have experienced a significant surge in passengers wishing to carry on and check multiple bags. This trend has resulted in bumped baggage, flight delays and even fewer available seats.

As a 100% Inuit-owned airline, we understand that a lack of access to affordable products in the North sometimes means transporting extra items up via passenger flight. Unfortunately, because of capacity and weight regulations, that has meant not all bags reach their destination when their owners do. Our priority is to right-size the amount of checked bags we check in relation to our actual aircraft capacity.

With this in mind, we will be updating our checked baggage policies:

    • Revised checked baggage allowances for our Flex and Super-Flex fares.
    • Updated fees for excess, oversized and overweight baggage.
    • New process for passengers to prioritize their most important checked baggage items.
    • Maximum of 3 bags that can be checked in at the counter.
    • Additional bags must be transported separately as cargo.
    • Revised checked baggage benefits for Aurora Concierge members.

Unlike the checked baggage policies of other airlines, our lowest-price Saver fare will continue to include one free checked bag.*

These changes, like those implemented by other airlines, will also help keep fare prices down in the face of rising operational, fuel, staffing costs, as well as overall inflation.

We look forward to the improved checked baggage service we will be able to offer and expect to see an overall improvement to our on-time performance and customer service.

  • New Edmonton Training Centre and Flight Simulator Improving Access and Increasing Aviation Safety

KANATA, ON, May 10, 2024 /CNW/ – Canadian North proudly announces a significant stride in advancing pilot training in Canada. A state-of-the-art Boeing 737NG Full-Flight Simulator (FFS) will begin operations in August 2024 at our new training centre in Edmonton, Alberta.

The aviation industry in Canada faces a pressing challenge due to the increased demand for pilots and the simulator training they require. With many training facilities operating at near-maximum capacity, Canadian pilots must sometimes travel to alternate locations, including to the United States, to earn or maintain their proficiency.

Canadian North’s latest initiative addresses this critical gap head-on, adding essential pilot training capacity in-country. Housed in Canadian North’s new 30,000-square-foot training facility in Edmonton, our latest-generation 737NG FFS ensures reliable access for pilots to invaluable training sessions. From mastering flight deck procedures, including emergency checklists, to performing a variety of flying scenarios, this simulator serves as an indispensable tool for pilots to develop and hone their skills.

“Our investment in the latest Boeing 737NG Flight Simulator in Edmonton, underscores Canadian North’s unwavering commitment to pilot proficiency and safety,” said Shelly De Caria, Canadian North President & CEO. “With this cutting-edge facility, we empower our pilots with the tools they need to continue to safely deliver for our customers.”

“Everything in the aviation industry is done with safety and security top of mind, and increased pilot training is a key element to the success of the industry,” said Myron Keehn, President & CEO, Edmonton International Airport (YEG). “This flight simulator and training centre is a huge milestone for not only the Edmonton Region, but also the industry as a whole, and we’re pleased to be part of this journey with Canadian North.”

With the addition of the new simulator, Canadian North will have the capacity to meet all its Boeing 737NG training requirements as the Company continues to upgrade and modernize its fleet. The facility will also have additional capacity to service other 737NG operators and airlines.

To reserve simulator training times, interested parties can make requests through Canadian North’s official website or by reaching out via email at flightsim@canadiannorth.com.

This training facility was made possible thanks to Canadian North valued partners: CAEExecutive Flight Centre and the Edmonton International Airport.

  • Designation of large and small airlines for 2024 – Canadian Transportation Agency update

Gatineau, January 17, 2024 – Canadian Transportation Agency

The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has updated the list of large and small airlines for 2024.

According to the Air Passenger Protection Regulations, large airlines are those that have carried more than two million passengers in each of the two preceding years. All other airlines are considered small.

This designation has an impact on the requirements that apply to airlines. Specifically for small airlines, these requirements will be different with regards to:

    • compensation
    • rebooking
    • refunds

    How airline size is determined

Large airlines within the meaning of the Air Passenger Protection Regulations are those that have carried more than two million passengers in each of the two preceding years. All other airlines are considered small.

    • Air Canada (including Jazz and Rouge), WestJetSunwing AirlinesAir Transat, and Flair Airlines are considered large airlines.
    • LynxCanada Jetlines, Canadian North and all other Canadian airlines are currently considered small.

The size of the airline is listed in the terms and conditions of your ticket (the airline’s tariff).

Small airlines carrying passengers for large airlines

If a small airline is carrying passengers on behalf of a large airline under a contract, they would have to follow the large carrier obligations for those passengers. This includes, for example, situations where a small airline is operating a flight, but some or all the passengers on the flight have bought the ticket from another large airline (code share or capacity purchase agreement).

Usually, the ticket and/or itinerary will show you which airline sold the ticket and which airline is operating the flight. You can tell who issued the ticket by looking at the first two letters of the flight number (these letters represent the unique two-letter code of the airline that sold the ticket).

    Accessible transportation

The Canadian Transportation Agency has a mandate to protect the fundamental right of persons with disabilities to accessible transportation services. For issues relating to accessibility, the Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Regulations (ATPDR) defines a large airline as an air carrier that provides passenger services within and to and from Canada and that transported a worldwide total of 1,000,000 passengers or more during each of the two preceding calendar years. Air Canada (including Jazz and Rouge), WestJetSunwing AirlinesAir Transat, Flair Airlines and Canadian North are considered large airlines for the ATPDR.

  • Canadian North Enhances Flight Operations with DynamicSource’s Electronic Weight and Balance Application

    December 18, 2023

Canadian North, in collaboration with DynamicSource, is revolutionizing flight operations in Canada’s Arctic and beyond. This collaboration has introduced an innovative electronic weight and balance solution, essential for ensuring aircraft safety and efficiency. While it is specially tailored for the unique challenges of remote and northern communities in Canada’s Arctic, its benefits extend across all areas of Canadian North’s operations, enhancing flight precision and reliability in various environments.

The application adheres to strict aviation regulations, enhancing safety with its user-friendly interface. It simplifies crucial pre-flight processes by:

    • Preventing input errors with fixed value limits
    • Automating checks against weight and balance constraints
    • Reducing manual calculation errors
    • Using consistent color-coding to highlight data changes and key fields

This digital approach to weight and balance management ensures aircraft stability and safety across Canadian North’s diverse flight operations. By transitioning from paper-based methods to a digital weight and balance system, Canadian North is not only making a significant move towards environmental sustainability, saving over 50,000 sheets of paper annually (equivalent to around 500 pounds), but also improving operational efficiency. In aviation, even small reductions in weight, like eliminating the need for paper, can lead to lower fuel consumption and reduced operational costs.

This shift to a digital solution not only aligns with Canadian North’s commitment to environmental stewardship but also contributes to more efficient, cost-effective operations. Reducing paper use not only has a positive environmental impact but also streamlines the workflow for pilots and ground crew, leading to quicker turnaround times and improved overall efficiency in flight operations.

“DynamicSource offers the best customizable solution for our unique aircraft, like the Boeing 737 combi and ATR42,” said Captain Aaron Speer, Canadian North’s VP of Flight Operations. “Their system’s functionality and innovation reflect our shared commitment to advancing aviation technology.”

“We were instantly impressed by Canadian North’s complex and critical operations in Canada’s diverse regions,” said Albert Kjellström, DynamicSource’s Sales and Business Development Manager. “This partnership showcases the adaptability and effectiveness of our weight and balance solution in challenging environments.”

“Our collaboration with Canadian North has been instrumental in refining our weight and balance solution,” said Tomas Paál, DynamicSource’s Project Manager. “Their feedback and drive for innovation have been invaluable.”

     Quick Facts

    • The electronic weight and balance system has been operational for several months, enhancing Canadian North’s flight operations.
    • The development of this bespoke system, in collaboration with DynamicSource, spanned over two years, tailored specifically to meet Canadian North’s unique operational challenges in Canada’s Arctic.
    • The new electronic system replaces traditional paper methods, enhancing safety and efficiency, which is estimated to save over 50,000 sheets of paper, equivalent to around 500 pounds.

     Backgrounder

Precise weight and balance management is crucial for aircraft safety and performance. It involves accurate calculations for distributing weight from passengers, cargo, fuel, and other factors. This new electronic system replaces error-prone manual processes with automated accuracy, a significant benefit for pilots operating in the challenging Arctic. The technology ensures optimal aircraft balance, critical in harsh weather and geographical conditions, enhancing Canadian North’s service reliability to remote and northern communities.
