  • Charlottetown Airport Authority Releases 2024 Results, Provides Update on Terminal Expansion Project at Annual Meeting

    May 6, 2025 – Charlottetown, PE – The Charlottetown Airport Authority Inc. (CAA) proudly unveiled its annual report for the fiscal year 2024 at its Annual Public Meeting this morning at YYG Charlottetown Airport. Andrew Pierce, Porter Airlines Vice President of Network Planning and Reporting, was the guest speaker for the event.

    Key highlights from the 2024 annual report include:

    1. Record-Breaking Passenger Numbers: CAA reported another year of record-breaking passenger traffic, as 410,733 passengers travelled through YYG. This demonstrates the airport’s vital role in connecting Prince Edward Island to the world.
    2. Infrastructure Development: Progress on the air terminal building expansion project, with the commencement of Phase 1b, and continued planning for Phases 2 and 3. This ongoing development is crucial to meeting the growing demands of our passengers and airlines.
    3. Enhanced Connectivity: CAA received strong support from its airline partners, with Air Canada, Porter, WestJet, and Flair providing service to six destinations.
    4. Sustainability Initiatives: The launch of new sustainability and accessibility plans underscores CAA’s dedication to responsible and inclusive growth. Achieving Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation is a major accomplishment and demonstrates a commitment to reducing our environmental impact.
    5. Economic Impact: The presence of YYG Charlottetown Airport continues to be a major economic driver for Prince Edward Island, generating a significant economic impact for the province.

    CAA Board Chair Steve Loggie kicked off the meeting and thanked passengers, partners, and employees for their patronage in 2024. “The support that we received from our airline partners and passengers drove the positive results revealed today.     The Honourable Zach Bell, Minister of Fisheries, Tourism, Sport and Culture for the Province of PEI, as well as City of Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown provided remarks at today’s meeting.

    The Airport Authority also took the time to provide an update on the Air Terminal Building Expansion project. Phase 1b will be completed later this year while the design work for Phases 2 and 3 are nearing completion. This project is a $40 million investment in YYG that is planned to be completed in 2027.

  • Porter expands service throughout North America this summer

    Network capacity increasing by 25%

    TORONTO / March 31, 2025 – Porter Airlines is updating its 2025 summer schedule. Increases in capacity are spread across new destinations, the continuation of winter routes into summer, and added frequencies. Domestic flying during this period is now 80% of total network capacity, up from 75% in its original summer plan. This is balanced by targeted frequency reductions in select U.S. markets. Despite the changes, Porter’s presence in the Canada-U.S. market will be 25% larger than last summer.

    The summer schedule is supported by 10 additional Embraer E195-E2 aircraft compared to 2024, growing the number of jets in the airline’s fleet to 44 (of an order up to 100). These operate in conjunction with the airline’s regional fleet of 29 De Havilland Dash 8-400s.

    Highlights:

    • Toronto Pearson-Moncton is a new route, which complements existing flights between Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport-Moncton and Ottawa-Moncton. 
    • Hamilton-Vancouver service doubles to 14 weekly flights, representative of strong pre-booking demand for this new route taking off in June.
    • Montre´al-Vancouver and Toronto-St. John’s both double planned service to 14 weekly flights.

    “These routes complement existing schedules by creating more non-stop flight options and greater connectivity for travelling beyond hubs in Toronto, Ottawa, Montre´al and Halifax,” added Jackson.

    Porter is also launching new service between Toronto Pearson – New York-LaGuardia and Montre´al – New York-Newark this spring. This is supported by expanding winter seasonal service through the summer to destinations such as Phoenix and San Diego, and increasing year-over-year capacity for Las Vegas and San Francisco. 

    “Porter has increased capacity in the U.S. by 25% year-over-year. Based on our current spring bookings, the number of passengers travelling on Porter across our transborder routes is up more than our capacity, demonstrating strong traveller demand for Porter’s elevated experience. As we shift some capacity to domestic routes in the near term to account for consumer travel interest, we are still seeing an overall increase in U.S. travel on Porter flights,” said Jackson.

  • Porter Airlines growing Atlantic Canada access to Charlottetown and Deer Lake

    TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Porter Airlines is continuing to expand its presence across Atlantic Canada, with new flights connecting Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Charlottetown Airport (YYG) and Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF) starting June 2025.

    Seasonal service between Toronto Pearson and Deer Lake starts June 10, 2025, with three weekly roundtrips, while Toronto Pearson-Charlottetown starts June 13, with four weekly roundtrips. Flights will operate on Porter’s new, 132-seat Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.

    These new routes from Toronto Pearson complement existing service with the 78-seat De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft from other Eastern Canada hubs, featuring up to twice daily year-round service between Ottawa and Charlottetown, and summer seasonal flights between Halifax and Deer Lake.

    A two-by-two configuration means there are no middle seats on any Porter flight, while all passengers on these routes will enjoy free, fast streaming WiFi. Porter’s elevated onboard experience also provides complimentary beer and wine served in glassware, and a selection of Canadian premium snacks for everyone.

    Both routes will operate seasonally, with Toronto-Deer Lake service to conclude on Sept. 13, and Toronto-Charlottetown service to end on Sept. 14.

    Connecting flights are available to Porter’s growing network beyond Toronto Pearson, including destinations such as Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Montréal and Ottawa.

    21 February 2024 – Charlottetown, PE – The Charlottetown Airport Authority (CAA) is proud to unveil its first ever Sustainability Plan aimed at mitigating the environmental impact of YYG Charlottetown Airport’s operations and fostering a more sustainable aviation sector.

    In response to growing concerns over climate change and environmental sustainability, the 2024-2028 Sustainability Plan is a comprehensive strategy designed to reduce carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly practices throughout the organization and its operations. It also strives to be a model corporate citizen that is inclusive, contributes to the community, and showcases best practices in governance.

     Key highlights of the Sustainability Plan include:

    • Climate Change: Interim Target to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 15% per passenger by 2028 (from the baseline year of 2017) while significantly expanding the airport terminal footprint and a long-term target to be Net Zero by 2050 for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
    • Community Relations: Increased financial support for community programs and organizations and provide a mechanism to support our employees for volunteer opportunities with community organizations.
    • Diversity & Inclusion: Train all CAA staff and transportation providers on the new Canadian Airport Accessibility Training program and ensure that all CAA employees participate in DEI training.

  • YYG Charlottetown Airport Reports Record Year for Passenger Travel

    Charlottetown, PE – The Charlottetown Airport Authority released 2023 passenger numbers today, which show a record year of air travel at YYG Charlottetown Airport, surpassing the 400,000-mark for the first time ever. Over the past 12 months, 402,686 passengers travelled through the airport with more airlines than ever before. This represents an increase of 18% over 2022, and 5% over 2019, the previous record year.

    “These numbers are only possible with the support of our airline partners as well as our many airport and community stakeholders,” says Charlottetown Airport Authority CEO, Doug Newson. “We are extremely grateful to be reporting this achievement and in addition to our airline partners and stakeholders, we also want to acknowledge and thank the many travellers that continue to choose YYG as their preferred airport.”

    2023 Highlights:

    • Record five airlines operating to seven destinations.
    • Welcomed a new airline partner, Porter, offering non-stop service to Ottawa on a year-round basis.
    • Increased off-season seat capacity as Air Canada operates Rouge aircraft for the first time ever in the winter months.

    • Record Passenger Numbers: From June to September, YYG Charlottetown Airport recorded a remarkable 220,489 passengers passing through its terminal building. This achievement marks a 7.2% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, and an 11.2% increase over 2019, demonstrating the resilience and appeal of our airport. Year-to-date traffic numbers are 19.5% ahead of 2022 and the Authority is projecting that final numbers for 2023 will exceed the record year of 2019.
    • Airlines and Routes Expansion: The impressive growth can be attributed to the unwavering commitment of our airline partners. This summer, we had a record five airlines operating flights to seven airports from YYG, offering passengers a wider range of choices and destinations.

As Porter arrives in Prince Edward Island, the airline now flies to all Atlantic provinces for the first time, reinforcing a commitment to building its presence in Eastern Canada.

    Porter is the only airline offering year-round, daily non-stop service between Charlottetown and Ottawa. The direct service begins with 11 weekly flights, increasing to 14 weekly round trips during the summer peak season. As of Oct. 29, the route has daily service through the winter.

    Ottawa also acts as a convenient connecting point for travellers making their way to and from PEI. This includes Vancouver on the West Coast and two options for accessing Toronto – the downtown convenience of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, plus Pearson International.

    The non-stop flights between Ottawa and Charlottetown are served by 78-seat De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft. All passengers will experience Porter’s genuine hospitality and elevated onboard service, including a selection of premium snacks, and free beer and wine served in glassware.

    Schedule highlights airline’s continued service to 39 Canadian cities from coast-to-coast

    Airline’s stringent health and safety measures ensure Canadians can travel safely to 48 destinations

    CALGARY, AB, July 13, 2020 /CNW/ – WestJet today released its updated August schedule featuring more than 200 daily flights to 48 destinations across Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe. The schedule features service to 39 domestic airports and further highlights the airline’s commitment to ensuring air service and regional connectivity is available to Canadians from coast-to-coast.

    The updated schedule is supported by the layered framework WestJet has built to ensure Canadians can continue to travel safely and responsibly through the airline’s Safety Above All hygiene program. The airline continues to provide flexibility in booking, change and cancellation policies for guests.

    Between July 15 through to September 4, 2020, WestJet will increase domestic frequencies and offer operations to 48 destinations including 39 in Canada, five in the U.S., two in Europe, one in the Caribbean, one in Mexico.

    The airline will reintroduce non-stop Dreamliner service from Calgary to London (Gatwick) and Paris effective August 20, 2020 and will continue to serve five key transborder destinations including Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York (LaGuardia) and Orlando. The airline will also offer service to Cancun, Mexico and will resume operations once-weekly to Montego Bay, Jamaica.

    The August schedule reflects approximately a 10 per cent increase in flying from July, but a decrease of 75 per cent less flying from August 2019. It also includes select frequency reductions and temporary domestic route suspensions between stations across Canada due to continued border closures and provincial travel restrictions.
