April 22, 2026 (Edmonton, AB) – Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is advancing its leadership in clean energy innovation with a hydrogen/diesel dual-fuel pilot project for runway snow sweepers. Officials from YEG provided an update on the airport’s hydrogen initiatives today at the Canadian Hydrogen Convention in Edmonton.
In partnership with Diesel Tech Industries and Alberta Innovates as technology and industry collaborators, YEG is testing the use of hydrogen alongside diesel in heavy-duty airside equipment. The project marks the first time this type of dual-fuel application is being piloted in the world.
The initiative focuses on high-output snow sweepers that operate in extreme winter conditions, where reducing emissions has historically been challenging. By integrating hydrogen into existing diesel engines, YEG is researching how to lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduce fuel consumption and demonstrate a practical pathway to decarbonize airport ground operations.
Unlike fully hydrogen-powered systems that require new infrastructure, the dual-fuel approach allows for immediate implementation by retrofitting existing equipment. This makes it a cost-effective and scalable solution for airports and industrial operators looking to reduce emissions in the near term.
The pilot has been collecting operational and performance data through the winter season, including fuel efficiency, system reliability, operator experience and performance in cold weather conditions. These insights will inform future decisions on expanding hydrogen use across YEG’s fleet and contribute to broader industry knowledge.

12 nonstop routes from coast to coast starting June 15
LONGUEUIL, Quebec–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Porter Airlines is transforming air travel in Montreal by bringing its elevated passenger experience to the revitalized Montreal Metropolitan Airport (MET). Service begins on June 15, with 12 routes being introduced across Canada.
Passengers flying from MET will step into a unique, modern terminal featuring an open concept departure lounge with comfortable seating throughout. MET will be served by both the 78-seat De Havilland Dash 8-400 and the 132-seat Embraer E195-E2. There are no middle seats on any Porter flight.
Montreal has been a central part of Porter’s strategy since it began flying to Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) when the airline was founded in 2006. MET’s opening allows for a rapid 91% expansion of Porter’s peak summer capacity in the region, including six new non-stop destinations. In 2025, YEG served 8.14 million passengers — a 2.8 per cent increase over 2024, just shy of the 8.15 million passengers served in 2019. This achievement reflects not only sustained demand and disciplined growth, but a resilient strategy rooted in long-term partnerships, infrastructure investment and a commitment to the region’s economic future.
While recovery across global markets remains uneven, YEG’s progress has been anchored by robust domestic travel demand. In 2025:
Domestic passenger volumes grew 6.2 per cent, serving as the backbone of YEG’s passenger growth
Total seat capacity increased 6.9 per cent, with notable growth in domestic routes including new service to Kamloops and Hamilton.
While transborder traffic experienced a decrease of 15 percent amid broader cross-border travel headwinds, YEG maintained important US connections and welcomed new service to Houston, Chicago and Salt Lake City.

Friesen succeeds longtime CFO Leslie Kwasny, who is retiring after a distinguished career supporting the growth, stability, and strategic evolution of Edmonton International Airport and Villeneuve Airport.
Friesen brings more than 17 years of senior finance leadership experience, including extensive involvement in the transportation industry, most recently as Senior Vice President, Finance with KAG Canada, where he supported complex, asset-intensive operations across Canada. His expertise spans financial planning and analysis, treasury, enterprise budgeting, risk management and mergers and acquisitions.
A key focus of Friesen’s career has been the introduction and improvement of financial systems and reporting tools, strengthening decision-making, transparency and efficiency. This experience will be instrumental as Edmonton Airports continues to advance its long-term strategy and financial resilience.

Line 2 was the first to be upgraded, marking the beginning of a broader rollout across all screening lines at YEG. Passengers travelling through screening lines equipped with CT X-ray are no longer required to remove bags with permitted liquids, aerosols and gels (100 ml or less), medical devices, or large electronics–including laptops–from their carry-on bags.
