Porter Inaugurates Service at New Montreal Metropolitan Airport (MET)

Opening represents a revitalized era of seamless travel and economic investment for Greater Montreal

LONGUEUIL, Quebec–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Porter Airlines is launching its first flights from Montreal Metropolitan Airport – MET, a significant, privately-funded national transportation infrastructure project, located in Longueuil on Montreal’s South Shore. MET’s opening allows for a rapid 91% expansion of Porter’s peak summer capacity in the region, including six new non-stop destinations. There are as many as 244 weekly departures from the city–138 from MET and 106 from YUL.

A new terminal that redefines the airport experience

Designed, built and operated by YHU Infrastructure Partners, the new terminal offers a renewed vision of air travel centred on efficiency, comfort and simplicity.

Covering 21,000 square metres, the terminal features nine boarding bridges and a spacious waiting lounge with 900 seats. Its integrated operating model, where all operations are managed under Terminal YHU, streamlines coordination and enables rapid response when needed. Meanwhile, the terminal’s compact size and the efficiency of the passenger journey allow travellers to arrive shortly before boarding and move quickly through the facility.

The sleek design, which maximizes natural light, incorporates contemporary nods to the historic visit of the R-100 airship in 1930, when its arrival in Saint-Hubert drew massive crowds and symbolized the technological daring of the era. Opened in 1927, Saint-Hubert Airport–now MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport–is Canada’s oldest airport and served as Montreal’s main airport for many years. Commercial flights were moved to Dorval in 1940 so airport could be fully dedicated to the war effort.

Located 15 km from downtown Montreal, MET is easily accessible via an extensive road network and the METbus express shuttle which provides a fast connection between the Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke metro station and the airport terminal. Its 500-metre drop-off zone and three traffic lanes will ensure smooth flow of vehicles. MET’s ideal location will make travelling easier for more than three million Quebecers living in Montreal, Montérégie, and Estrie region (Eastern Townships).

The terminal’s retail lineup will be entirely Quebec-based and will include a Bâton Rouge restaurant, a Café Dépôt and a convenience and travel goods store.

The terminal was designed by Scott & Associates, and construction was carried out by PCL Construction, with work beginning less than three years ago in August 2023.

The development of MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport is the result of an extensive regional consultation process. Elected officials at all levels of government along with representatives from the aerospace, tourism and business communities, mobility stakeholders, and community representatives all actively contributed to MET’s development forums and working groups. This process explains MET’s high level of social acceptance. A Léger survey conducted in 2024 revealed that a strong majority of citizens–77 %– support the development of the new terminal.

Creation of a first-class private aviation terminal at the MET

LONGUEUIL, QC, Feb. 6, 2024 /CNW/ – The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) is investing $90 million in the new domestic passenger terminal at MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport (YHU), formerly known as the Saint-Hubert Airport. The terminal development project is a partnership between Macquarie Asset Management and Porter Aviation Holdings Inc.

The CIB’s investment enables the development of a new domestic airport terminal to enhance mobility options for Canadians travelling to and from the Montreal area, while supporting economic opportunities in the Greater Montreal region.

Located 15 kilometres from Montreal, the Montreal Metropolitan Airport project includes construction of a new standalone 21,300 m² two-storey domestic terminal with nine gates, associated taxiways, and landside facilities such as parking lots with barrier-free parking spaces, EV charging stations, and shuttle bus pick-up and drop-off points. Additional landside facilities include terminal frontage roads, road connection from the property boundary to long-term parking lots, landscaping, and an aviation fuel farm.

The terminal is expected to meet forecasted growth of up to four million passengers per year. Construction is scheduled to be completed by fall 2025.

Porter Airlines will operate at MET using a combination of Embraer E195-E2 and Dash 8-400 aircraft, serving cities across Canada. The new terminal will be open to other airlines, including Pascan Aviation’s network of existing regional Quebec flights.

Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport will not be any noisier when the new terminal opens than it is today

The objective of the acoustic evaluation report was to establish the current portrait of the airport’s sound climate and compare it to the projected situation when the terminal opens in July 2025. To do this, a very high level of precision was used, in particular with the modeling of all the flights listed by NavCanada in 2022 on which was superimposed the modeling of all the flights projected in 2025. The projection includes the current activity of the airport with the addition of Porter Airlines flights, but subtracting Chapter 2 aircraft which will be prohibited at night, as well as a 25% reduction in flight school movements which is the result of new training methods currently being implemented.

The current and projected noise impact is demonstrated by the Ldn curves below which measure the average and weighted noise impact based on the five loudest days of the year.

This reduction is, among other things, attributable to the end of the activities of older generation aircraft, which are known to be noisier. Porter partners with Macquarie Asset Management on development of Montréal Saint-Hubert Airport passenger terminal

Construction PCL selected as general contractor

LONGUEUIL, QC, July 27, 2023 /CNW/ – Porter Aviation Holdings Inc. (PAHI) is entering a partnership with Macquarie Asset Management (MAM) to support development of the previously announced passenger terminal at Montréal Saint-Hubert Airport (YHU). A new company, Partenaires d’infrastructure YHU (Québec) s.e.c. / YHU Infrastructure Partners (Québec) LP, is being formed under joint Porter and MAM ownership to develop the terminal. A local management team will operate the facility upon completion.

Construction PCL (PCL) has also been selected as the general contractor for the passenger terminal. Work will commence in August, with a scheduled completion by mid-2025.

The investment in YHU adds to its global airport and airport-related infrastructure experience, which includes current investments in the operators of Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Ecuador; El Dorado International Airport in Colombia; Aberdeen, Glasgow, Farnborough and Southampton Airports in the United Kingdom; and North Queensland and Perth Airports in Australia.

The passenger terminal is designed to be 21,000 sq.m. (225,000 sq.ft.) with nine bridged aircraft gates, and an overall modern design aesthetic. There will be lounge-style seating for all passengers and access to food and beverage concessions, as well as retail vendors. All building systems are expected to operate fully on electric power.

The YHU terminal development is modelled after the successful revitalization of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport that Porter has been a part of for the last 17 years. The YHU terminal is expected to provide faster passenger processing than large international airports, resulting in travel time savings to go along with a comfortable departure lounge environment. PAHI originally designed and built the modern Billy Bishop terminal that is in use today.

Porter will be an anchor tenant at the new YHU terminal with routes operated throughout Canada using a combination of 78-seat De Havilland Dash 8-400 and 132-seat Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. The terminal will also be open to other airlines, and it is expected that a number of carriers will serve the airport. Porter also intends to continue building its presence at Montréal Trudeau Airport (YUL), providing a range of choice for Greater Montréal travellers.
