Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) helps connect people and businesses to destinations across Canada and beyond.
In 2025, more than 426,500 passengers travelled through YKF. This was the airport’s third-highest passenger total on record. Passenger numbers have been affected by shifting travel patterns and fewer flights to the United States. Even so, demand for travel within Canada and for convenient connections remains strong.
“YKF is an important piece of infrastructure for Waterloo Region,” said Karen Redman, Chair of the Region of Waterloo. “It contributes more than $220 million each year to our local economy. When residents choose to fly from YKF, they support local jobs in airport operations, security, customer service, and maintenance. They also support local businesses that serve passengers, like Stockyards, which provides food service using locally sourced ingredients. Choosing YKF means supporting local services, employers, and supply chains.”
Airports are measured in two ways: passengers (how many people travel) and aircraft movements (each plane takeoff or landing). YKF is one of Canada’s fastest-growing airports and is consistently ranked in the top 20 busiest Canadian airports for passengers. In 2025, YKF had 145,313 takeoffs and landings, making YKF one of the top 10 busiest airports in the country for runway activity.
When more people fly through YKF, it also helps pay for airport improvements. Because of recent terminal upgrades and operational changes, YKF can now handle up to one million passengers a year without increasing operating costs. This means the airport is better prepared to meet changing travel needs in the future.
Flair Airlines, Sunwing, and WestJet offer non-stop flights from YKF. Air Canada Landline provides motorcoach service between YKF and Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ). To meet increased demand, Air Canada has doubled its service and now offers 10 return trips daily. Together, YKF’s airline partners provide access to more than 140 destinations worldwide through their global networks.
YKF is proud to be one of only four airports in Canada certified gold by the Rick Hansen Foundation for accessibility. The airport is committed to removing barriers so more passengers can move through the airport safely and with confidence. For more information, visit www.waterlooairport.ca.
MONTRÉAL, March 12, 2026 – Air Canada today said it has renewed its agreement with The Landline Company to extend the popular, luxury motorcoach service to the Ontario communities of Niagara, Sarnia and Muskoka, linking them directly with the airline’s global hub at Toronto Pearson International Airport beginning June 15, 2026. In addition, the carrier also announced added frequencies on Landline’s existing motorcoach services for Kingston and Kitchener-Waterloo.
This summer, Landline will operate 26 daily departures to and from Toronto Pearson across six Ontario communities, expanding regional connectivity and deepening network feed into Air Canada’s global hub.
“Air Canada has been very encouraged by the success of the Landline luxury motorcoach service, which leverages the convenience of intermodal transport to extend our network into local communities. Customers greatly enjoy the comforts of Landline’s luxury motorcoaches, which make it easy for them to connect seamlessly between their regional airports and Air Canada’s Toronto Pearson global hub. The addition of Niagara, Sarnia and Muskoka to our network will not only make it easier for their residents to travel with us but should also benefit these communities by facilitating inbound personal, tourist and business travel from around the world, which can provide a significant economic boost,” said Ranbir Singh, Director, Regional Airlines and Markets at Air Canada.
“We are proud to extend our relationship with Air Canada and support the continued growth of its Ontario network,” said Nick Johnson, Vice President, Commercial at Landline. “Travellers can now book communities like Niagara, Muskoka and Sarnia just as easily as a short-haul connecting flight, with seamless booking, loyalty earning and full itinerary protection.”
“By offering seamless access to some of Ontario’s most sought-after destinations, this extension strengthens regional connectivity while showcasing Ontario’s world-class tourism experiences. Expanded services to Niagara, Muskoka and Sarnia will bring people closer to the unforgettable, made-in-Ontario experiences that make our province a premier place to explore,” said the Honourable Stan Cho, Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming.
A Seamless, Premium Experience
Air Canada customers originating in participating communities will check in as normal for their flight pre-security at their local airport, receive boarding passes for all segments, and have their baggage tagged to their final destination. Upon arrival at Toronto Pearson, customers proceed to the bag drop area and then security before continuing to their departure gate.
The Air Canada-branded motorcoaches operated by Landline are designed and built in Quebec by Prevost, and provide premium features such as spacious leather seating, free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and full accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility. The motorcoaches run multiple non-stop round trips daily from regional airports to Toronto Pearson, offering customers the same benefits as air-only itineraries, including boarding pass and bag tag printing at their regional airport, as well as, disruption protection, and Aeroplan point earning opportunities. In the event of coach or flight delays, customers travelling on Landline will receive similar protections as those travelling on air-only itineraries. Aeroplan members earn points for both ground and air segments.
In Niagara Falls, Landline services will continue beyond Niagara District Airport with pickup and drop off at the Niagara Falls Marriott on the Falls, located adjacent to the falls. This allows customers to travel seamlessly from Air Canada’s global network directly to accommodations steps from one of Canada’s most iconic leisure destinations.

WATERLOO, ON, May 14, 2025 /CNW/ – Chartright Air Group, Canada’s leading private aviation operator, is proud to join forces with Bombardier (BBD-B.TO) and the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) to support the final production and quality assurance for Bombardier Global aircraft. Bombardier is recognized globally for producing the best-performing aircraft for the world’s most discerning people and businesses, governments and militaries.
As part of this collaboration, Bombardier has taken residency in Chartright’s newly expanded hangar and FBO facility located at the Region of Waterloo International Airport. Economic impact has increased by 251 per cent since 2015*
Waterloo Region – A new economic impact study confirms that the Region of Waterloo International Airport is a vital economic engine for Waterloo Region and beyond. Prepared by InterVISTAS, the study examined the economic impact generated by the airport’s operations and associated activities in 2023. The report measured the economic impact generated by YKF airport and airport related businesses (direct), supplying and supporting industries (indirect) and employee spending in the economy (induced).
Key findings of the report show that YKFs total 2023 annual operations generated:
$390 million in total economic output
1,360 jobs and $100 million in wages, including 660 jobs at YKF
$170 million in Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
$28 million in tax revenue (local, provincial and federal)
“This study confirms the importance of YKF as a key economic driver of local and regional employment, tourism, trade, and economic growth,” said Colleen James, Chair of the Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development Committee and Regional Councillor. “Our continued investment in YKF and our local aviation and aerospace sector helps our community attract more investment, create jobs, stimulate local businesses and support the country’s manufacturing supply chain – all of which are more critical than ever.”
YKF is home to 44 businesses in various aviation related businesses, including air carriers, flight operations, government, manufacturing, ground transportation, construction and food and retail. The largest airline partner, Flair Airlines directly employs flight attendants, pilots, and mechanics, and indirectly employs passenger agents and baggage handlers.
Given the labour shortages affecting the aviation industry, the value of supporting the development of aviation professionals is top of mind. Nearly 20 per cent of total commercial pilot licenses in Canada are graduates of the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre at YKF.

TSB releases investigation report into 2022 runway overrun of Boeing 737 in Kitchener, Ontario
Richmond Hill, Ontario, —
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has released its investigation report (A22O0161) on the 2022 runway overrun of a Flair Airlines Boeing 737-800 at the Region of Waterloo International Airport in Ontario. There were no injuries.
The captain held both thrust levers at idle during the landing flare. After touchdown, the captain removed his hand from the left thrust lever to activate the right engine thrust reverser. With the aircraft still in go-around mode, the right engine was producing reverse thrust and the left engine began advancing towards maximum thrust, deactivating the automatic systems that help stop the aircraft and causing control difficulties. The captain managed to stay on the runway and used manual braking to slow down; however, there was insufficient runway remaining on which to stop, and the aircraft overran the runway by approximately 500 feet.
The investigation found that there were several factors which contributed to the inadvertent press of the TO/GA switch and the undetected flight mode change. These include pilot fatigue, the attention of both pilots focused outside the aircraft during the flare and landing, and that the aircraft systems did not provide visual and aural cues that were noticeable enough by the flight crew to indicate the inadvertent mode change during that phase of flight.
A defect with the aircraft’s left thrust reverser was first reported in May 2022, over six months before the occurrence, and 22 subsequent reports provided an opportunity to troubleshoot the problem. Despite this, the defect did not meet the regulatory definition of a recurring defect, thus, Flair’s maintenance control software did not identify it as such. If the underlying issue behind a persistent maintenance defect is not addressed in a timely manner, there is a risk that it may compound, resulting in a serious consequence.
Following the occurrence, Flair Airlines modified its operating procedures to better support the existing requirement to disengage both the autopilot and autothrottle at the same time.
The TSB is an independent agency that investigates air, marine, pipeline, and rail transportation occurrences. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability.

With today’s launch of its new motorcoach service in collaboration with The Landline Company, Air Canada is connecting the Hamilton and the Region of Waterloo airports to Toronto Pearson. Customers can now create a single itinerary when booking travel with Air Canada from Waterloo Region or Hamilton through Toronto to any destination. The service includes a high-end motorcoach service connecting with Air Canada flights, offering a smooth and hassle-free travel experience. This integrated service is a trial initiative from John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport and the Region of Waterloo International Airport, with the potential to make it available elsewhere in Canada in the future.
“We are excited to launch this new service in collaboration with The Landline Company, offering our customers a convenient, stress-free multimodal option that will make connections easy and travel more seamless. We are committed to improving regional services and this innovative partnership is a testament to that,” said Ranbir Singh, Director Regional Airlines and Markets at Air Canada. “Passengers who choose to travel between airports using Landline’s top-tier motorcoaches will enjoy similar benefits as those who opt for air-only connections: a convenient single itinerary, when departing Hamilton or the Region of Waterloo, disruption protection and Aeroplan earning opportunities.”
“We are thrilled to launch our premium connecting service from Hamilton and the Region of Waterloo in partnership with Air Canada,” said Nick Johnson, Vice President, Commercial for Landline. “In addition to premium onboard amenities, and a protected flight connection on every trip, passengers can now book and ride our luxury motorcoach for no additional cost when paired with their Air Canada flight.”
“Today marks an exciting development for the future of air travel in southern Ontario as Air Canada’s luxury motorcoaches, operated in partnership with The Landline Company, officially take to the road from Hamilton International,” said Cole Horncastle, Executive Managing Director of John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. “This innovative new service aligns with Hamilton International’s commitment to provide a comfortable, convenient travel experience for passengers and expands access between our region and Air Canada’s global network.”
“At YKF we are investing and expanding in so many ways. We are thrilled to welcome Air Canada’s motorcoach service, further connecting Waterloo Region to a network of 140-plus destinations,” said Karen Redman, Chair of the Region of Waterloo. “We look forward to continuing to work together to build on an airport that offers options for every traveller.”
How it works
Landline will operate six, non-stop round trips daily to Toronto Pearson from each of the Hamilton and Region of Waterloo airports in southern Ontario. Air Canada customers beginning their journey at Hamilton or Region of Waterloo airports will check in as normal for their flight and obtain boarding passes for all segments of their trip. At a designated departure point at the local airport, they will board a luxury, Air Canada-branded motorcoach and their checked baggage will be loaded. Upon arrival at Toronto Pearson, customers will proceed directly with their bags to the departure level.
In the event of coach or flight delays, customers travelling on Landline will be automatically rebooked like customers travelling on air-only itineraries. Members of Air Canada’s Aeroplan program will earn points for both ground and air segments, as on any normal connecting flight itinerary. For more information see www.aircanada.com/landline
