    Swoop celebrates return of international departures from Abbotsford and Hamilton

    Airline operating southbound international flights in November, reaccommodating northbound travellers through approved airports until NOTAM updates are in effect

    CALGARY, AB, Nov. 3, 2021 /CNW/ – Today, Swoop resumed international flight departures from Abbotsford International Airport with flight WO 602 bound for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Earlier this week, the ultra-low-cost carrier also resumed transborder flying from John C. Munro Hamilton Airport with its inaugural flight to Orlando Sanford International Airport. 

    Prior to yesterday’s federal government announcement adding eight airports to the approved international list, Swoop made the decision to proceed with scheduled southbound flights, arranging for northbound travellers to be re-routed or reaccommodated through approved airports until at least November 29, 2021. 

    “We welcome this important and overdue update allowing for international passenger arrivals in Hamilton, Abbotsford and Victoria as of November 30,” said Charles Duncan, President of Swoop. “We know how eager Canadians are to travel and we are going to great lengths to prevent further disruption or delay to our travellers’ plans.”

    Travellers returning from Orlando to the Hamilton area are being reaccommodated on Swoop flights operating to Toronto Pearson International Airport, while travellers returning from Puerto Vallarta are connecting in Edmonton before carrying on to Abbotsford. 

    “As Canada transitions to a fully-vaccinated air sector and to ensure the right measures are in place for Canadians to safely and affordably travel this winter, we urge the federal government to next update the advance PCR/molecular testing requirements and implement a new practical policy for travelling children under-12 returning to Canada,” continued Duncan. 

    On November 30, Swoop will operate its St. Pete-Clearwater to Hamilton flight as scheduled, marking Hamilton Airport’s first international arrival since February 6, 2020. The airline will also begin transborder flights between Victoria and Puerto Vallarta starting December 19.

  • Government of Canada announces additional Canadian airports accepting international passenger flights

    OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 2, 2021 /CNW/ – The Government of Canada is prioritizing the health and safety of all people in Canada by continuing to take a risk-based and measured approach to re-opening the border. Canada’s phased approach to easing border measures is informed by the available data and scientific evidence, including the vaccination rate of Canadians, and the improving epidemiological situation.

    The strict vaccine travel requirements that will be fully phased in by November 30, and the pan-Canadian proof of vaccination credential now available for travel, are creating opportunities for safe travel for vaccinated Canadians.

    As a next step in increasing travel opportunities, Transport Canada is easing the restriction on international flight arrivals. The department is expanding the scope of the existing Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) that currently directs international passenger flights into 10 Canadian airports.

    Effective on November 30, 2021, international flights carrying passengers will be permitted to land at the following additional Canadian airports:

    • St. John’s International
    • John C. Munro Hamilton International
    • Region of Waterloo International
    • Regina International
    • Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International
    • Kelowna International
    • Abbotsford International
    • Victoria International

    These airports, in cooperation with the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency and Transport Canada, are working to implement the measures necessary to start safely welcoming international passengers as of November 30.

    Consideration will be given to adding additional airports as conditions dictate, based on demand, operational capacity, the epidemiological situation in Canada, and recommendations from the Public Health Agency of Canada.

    The Government of Canada continues to work closely with airports and aviation operators to ensure appropriate procedures are put in place to protect travellers and workers.

    Border and public health measures remain subject to change as the epidemiological situation evolves.

    Airline to restart eight routes and inaugurate new flights between nine communitiesby early July
    




    CALGARY, AB, June 25, 2021 /CNW/ – WestJet is further restoring British Columbia’s domestic and interprovincial connectivity with the restart of eight routes to and from destinations across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. The airline is also set to inaugurate 10 new routes by July 5, 2021. Full schedule details and resumption dates are outlined below.

    Low-cost airline Swoop is on the rebound, head of commercial and finance Bert van der Stege said Friday, after being hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
    




    According to van der Stege, the carrier lost more than 90 per cent of its revenue and roughly 90 per cent of its passenger volume over the course of the pandemic. 
    




    “The past 15 months or so have been incredibly difficult,” van der Stege said during an executive exchange held virtually with Hamilton International Airport.
    




    “It’s been a difficult 15 months [but] we believe we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel now and have reached a turning point.”
    




    Van der Stege said a “great demand” for seats is “slowly coming back”. 
    




    “We’ve seen a period of record sales again now. People are clearly willing and able to book that long-awaited trip,” he said.
    




    This summer we expect to serve five destinations within Canada from Hamilton airport, and then as we approach the following winter season we will be adding five international destinations from Hamilton.- Bert van der Stege, Swoop Airline
    




    Van der Stege said Swoop will initially focus on domestic travel as it emerges from the fallout caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that’s where they expect the rebound to start. 
    




    He said sales and forecast passenger numbers “are picking up really nicely, in particular in and out of jurisdictions that have outlined a clear path to recovery, easing travel restrictions, [and] a path to open up based on science.”
    




    After that initial period of domestic recovery and domestic travel, van der Stege said Swoop will once again partner with Hamilton International Airport and open up international travel.
    




    “This summer we expect to serve five destinations within Canada from Hamilton airport, and then as we approach the following winter season we will be adding five international destinations from Hamilton.”
    




    Swoop will launch a new flight from Hamilton to Kelowna this Sunday, while the winter schedule will include the following:
    




    • Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
    • Cancun, Mexico.
    • Montego Bay, Jamaica
    • Orlando and Tampa Bay, Florida.

    She said Hamilton experienced almost a 70 per cent decline in passenger volumes last year due to COVID-19.
    




    Puckering said this year is just as hard but she is confident that things will get back to normal.
    




    “The aviation industry has had shocks and has been hurt before [but] it has been resilient and we have bounced back,” Puckering said.

    Canadian airlines are reactivating flights to Puerto Vallarta after a four-month suspension.
    




    Westjet reinitiated its flights to the Jalisco beach destination on June 5, and Air Canada will be next with the reopening of its Vancouver route on August 1.
    




    Low cost airline Swoop plans to restart its Hamilton and Edmonton flights October 5, and its Abbotsford and Toronto routes on November 3. It will also inaugurate a new route from Winnipeg on November 4.
    




    Transat will relaunch flights from Toronto and Montreal in November.
    




    Sunwing is still yet to inform clients of its plans to reopen, but has previously announced it hopes to reestablish its Mexico routes in December.
    




    Marc Murphy, lead of the Riviera Nayarit Visitors and Conventions Office, said Canadians would be happy for the change of climate. “Each year, thousands of Canadians travel to this region to escape the intense winter cold and find an enviable climate, the most beautiful beaches … and a great quality hotel offering,” he said.
