  • CUPE enters arbitration on flight attendant wages with Air Canada

    19 January 2026

Vancouver, BC–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Air Canada Component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has begun its first day of arbitration with Air Canada and Arbitrator Paula Knopf to settle wages after flight attendants voted over 99% to reject Air Canada’s final wage offer in September 2025.

“These hearings will provide our members an opportunity to hear the facts around what transpired in the negotiations spanning December 2024 to August 2025, and also a sense of what to expect from the process going forward,” said Component President Wesley Lesosky.

“It will also give our members an opportunity to hear the extent to which Air Canada values our members and the vital, safety-critical work they do every day.”

In August 2025, Air Canada sought and obtained the support of the federal government to strip Air Canada flight attendants of their Charter right to strike for better working conditions. Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau admitted on live television that Air Canada did not make contingency plans for a strike, because they anticipated federal intervention to quash any job action on its behalf.

However, flight attendants defied the federal government’s back-to-work order, prompting Air Canada back to the bargaining table where a stronger offer on ground pay was achieved, but Air Canada refused to budge on their previous positions on hourly rates of pay. The parties agreed to move the final question of wages to arbitration.

“The fact that we are here is a testament to the courage of our members,” said Lesosky. “We refused to back down when a multi-billion-dollar company and their enforcers in the federal government tried to put their boots on our necks.”

“We achieved a better deal because of the bravery of our flight attendants, and we are hopeful we will make our case before the arbitrator that our members deserve better than the poverty wages offered by our employer.”

For more than 35 years, Dreams Take Flight has given thousands of children aged six to 13 facing physical, mental or social adversity the chance to take a dream trip to incredible destinations, such as Walt Disney World Resort. Eight annual charity-chartered flights depart from cities across Canada, providing participants with an unforgettable experience filled with laughter, wonder and adventure.

The initiative is 100 per cent volunteer driven, with thousands of Air Canada employees at the forefront. From flight crews decorating aircraft to volunteers planning every detail on the ground, teams work tirelessly all year long to ensure every child feels safe, celebrated, and supported throughout the journey. As proud partners, Air Canada and the Air Canada Foundation provide each chapter with an aircraft, along with additional support and services, to ensure every trip is a success.

From serving festive holiday meals in airport lounges and on select flights between December 24 and 25, to adding seasonal touches at airports and onboard, Air Canada teams are focused on making every holiday journey feel special and exciting for customers and families. The airline has also expanded its in-flight entertainment selection to include a wider range of holiday films, giving customers more ways to relax and enjoy the season while in the air.

    About the Air Canada Foundation

The Air Canada Foundation, a not-for-profit organization focused on the health and well-being of children and youth, was launched in 2012. It offers both financial and in-kind support to Canadian-registered charities. Core programs include the Hospital Transportation Program, which redistributes Aeroplan points to 15 pediatric hospitals across Canada, enabling sick children to access the medical care they need away from home. The Air Canada Foundation, in collaboration with the airline, also engages directly in fundraising activities, such as the Every Bit Counts program, which encourages customers to donate loose change of all denominations on board flights or through collection containers available in Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges. The Foundation also offers continued support to major health-related causes that benefit Canadians and is an active participant in international humanitarian relief activity as the need arises. Now in its 32nd edition, the World Travel Awards celebrates excellence across the travel, tourism, and hospitality sectors. Winners are determined based on a worldwide poll involving qualified executives in the travel sector, alongside consumer travel buyers.

This award reflects its unparalleled focus on delivering seamless, world-class travel experiences. The commitment and professionalism of the Star Alliance team continue to set new industry benchmarks.”

In addition to the alliance-level award, several Star Alliance member airlines also claimed individual victories this year, showcasing the collective strength and service excellence that Star Alliance brings to travellers worldwide. • Olá, tudo bem? Air Canada Launches Non-Stop Service to Rio de Janeiro, Direct to Sun, Samba, Copacabana and Ipanema!

    • Seasonal flights offered until the end of March 2026
    • Rio de Janeiro is Air Canada’s second destination in Brazil

MONTRÉAL, Dec. 05, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Air Canada’s first flight from Toronto to Rio de Janeiro arrived this morning, linking Canada to the picturesque seaside city in Brazil. The seasonal service, offered three days a week, runs until the end of March 2026. A ceremony was held at Toronto Pearson International Airport to mark the occasion.

Air Canada Launches Non-Stop Service to Rio de Janeiro

“We are thrilled to introduce non-stop seasonal service between Toronto and Rio de Janeiro, connecting two vibrant cities and offering Canadians more opportunities to experience Brazil’s rich culture and stunning landscapes. This route reflects Air Canada’s commitment to expanding our international network and providing our customers with exceptional travel options,” said Alexandre Lefevre, Vice President – Network Planning at Air Canada.

“With its unparalleled beauty and vibrant energy, Rio is already one of the main gateways for Canadian visitors to Brazil, and now, as another summer season is set to start in Brazil, we will certainly see this flow grow with Air Canada’s new flight. Rio and Brazil are wide open to the world and increasingly connected. Brazil is the fastest-growing country in international tourism this year, and that is the result of the promotion of our cultural richness and the authenticity of the experiences that foreign travellers find in our country and in the Brazilian people,” said Marcelo Freixo, President of Embratur.

“The new Air Canada route is another important step in expanding Rio de Janeiro’s international connectivity. Linking Toronto to Galeão strengthens our presence in the North American market, creates new opportunities for tourism, and increases the flow of visitors to all regions of the state. We are experiencing the best moment for tourism in Rio in decades, and this new service reinforces that Rio de Janeiro remains on the radar of the world’s leading airlines. It means more development, more jobs, and greater visibility for our state,” said Gustavo Tutuca, Secretary of Tourism of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

“The expansion of Air Canada’s route comes at a particularly positive moment, as the number of Canadian visitors to Rio de Janeiro has grown compared to last year. This progress reinforces the potential of this connection and paves the way to further enhance the exchange between both countries, not only Canadians traveling to Rio, but also Brazilians visiting Canada. Strengthening the air network creates real conditions to expand business opportunities, attract events and deepen relations with strategic markets,” said Luiz Strauss, Executive President, Visit Rio.

“The direct connection between Rio de Janeiro and Toronto represents another step in expanding our international connectivity. This route, now returning to Rio, brings Brazil even closer to the North American market and strengthens RIOgaleão’s role as a gateway for tourism and business. We are very pleased to offer travelers a faster, more convenient, and more seamless journey, and we are confident that this operation will generate significant economic benefits for both the city and the state,” said Alexandre Monteiro, CEO RIOgaleão Airport.

Air Canada’s Rio flights are operated using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner offering Signature Class, Premium Economy and Economy class cabins. Aeroplan members benefit from free texting onboard, sponsored by Bell.

Air Canada is proud to offer eligible customers premium services at Toronto Pearson. This includes the Air Canada Signature Suite, voted the World’s Best Business Class Lounge Dining at this year’s Skytrax Awards, Concierge service, and a Maple Leaf Lounge in the international departures area.
