    About the World Airline Awards

The World Airline Awards are wholly independent and impartial, introduced in 1999 to provide a customer satisfaction study that was truly global. Travellers across the world vote in the largest airline passenger satisfaction survey to determine the award winners. The awards are referred to by media around the world as “the Oscars of the aviation industry”.

All costs of the Survey and Awards event are paid by Skytrax, and airlines do not pay any entry or registration fee. There are no charges for use of the Award logos and results.

The online customer survey operated from September 2022 to May 2023, together with invitations sent to previous year respondents in the survey database. The customer survey was provided in English, French, Spanish, Russian, Japanese and Chinese.

Over 100 customer nationalities participated in the 2022/2023 survey with 20.23 million eligible entries counted in the results. Survey entries are screened to identify IP and user information, with all duplicate, suspect or ineligible entries deleted. More than 325 airlines are featured in the final Award results.

    • Maturities for secured loans totalling $198.0 million extended from April 2024 to April 2025

MONTREAL, June 8, 2023 /CNW/ – Transat A.T. Inc., a holiday travel reference worldwide, particularly as an air carrier under the Air Transat brand, announces its results for the second quarter ended April 30, 2023.

“For the second quarter of 2023, Transat reported a solid performance, with an adjusted operating income of $56.1 million, nearly 40% higher than in the same quarter of 2019. At mid-year, and based on current booking trends, we are raising the target for the adjusted operating income margin from the initially set range of 4% to 6% to a target of 5.5% to 7% for the fiscal year.”

“Several factors contributed to the Corporation’s favourable results. Firstly, the demand for leisure travel, which is Transat’s primary niche, is holding steady. This high volume of activity is driving prices up, resulting in 15% increases at the beginning of the quarter, and almost 24% at the end of the quarter, compared with the same period in 2019. In addition, Transat actively continued its fleet optimization plan, deploying in winter 2023 a capacity comparable to winter 2019 with 20 fewer aircraft in service. Better price management, thanks to improved practices and new tools, has also helped to maximize revenues and seize market opportunities. Transat also relied on continuous improvement in its operational efficiency throughout the quarter.”

“With more than 60% of our capacity sold, the stage is set for a dynamic summer. Transat will deploy for the summer a capacity representing 89% of its 2019 level, with Europe comprising 80% of the activity, leveraging the most profitable routes for Transat,” stated Annick Guérard, President and Chief Executive Officer of Transat.

    Second-quarter highlights

    • For the second quarter, the Corporation generated $870.1 million in revenues, up $512.0 million from $358.2 million for the corresponding period of 2022. In 2022, the Corporation had to cancel nearly 30% of flights scheduled as a result of the sharp decline in demand and massive booking cancellations following the emergence of the Omicron variant.
    • Transat recorded operating income of $18.7 million, an improvement of $106.3 million compared with the $87.5 million loss in 2022.
    • Adjusted operating income amounted to $56.1 million, an improvement of $107.2 million, compared with an adjusted operating loss of $51.0 million in 2022.
    • Net loss amounted to $29.2 million ($0.76 per share), compared with $98.3 million ($2.60 per share) for the corresponding quarter of last year.
    • Excluding non-operating items, Transat reported an adjusted net loss of $8.0 million ($0.21 per share) for the second quarter of 2023, compared with $111.6 million ($2.95 per share) in 2022.

    Financial position

As at April 30, 2023, cash and cash equivalents amounted to $623.6 million, an increase of $112.4 million compared with $511.2 million at the same date in 2022. Cash and cash equivalents in trust or otherwise reserved resulting from travel package sales also increased; the balance stood at $262.2 million as at April 30, 2023, compared with $191.9 million at the same date in 2022.

Customer deposits for future travel stood at $867.1 million, up 38% from pre-pandemic levels as at April 30, 2019, reflecting the rebound in demand and higher average selling prices.

During the second quarter, Transat renegotiated secured loans totalling $198.0 million, extending the maturity dates from April 2024 to April 2025. “These amendments provide us greater flexibility in repaying debt and attest to our financial partners’ trust in our recovery plan,” stated Patrick Bui, Chief Financial Officer of Transat.

In total, available financing amounted to a maximum of $963.3 million, of which $863.2 million was drawn down ($858.6 million as at April 30, 2022), for unrestricted liquidity of $723.6 million.

    Outlook

To date, although load factors for this summer are 2.6 percentage points lower than in 2019, airline unit revenues, expressed in yield, are 29% higher than four years ago. The combination of strong demand and upward pricing will allow the Corporation to cope with a cost environment that remains generally higher and volatile.

In light of the mid-year indicators, the Corporation is raising the target for adjusted operating incomemargin from the initially set range of 4% to 6% to a target of 5.5% to 7% for fiscal 2023. In making these forward-looking statements, the Corporation adjusted its assumptions for the full year, including moderate growth in Canada’s GDP, an exchange rate of C$1.35 to US$1 and an average price per gallon of jet fuel of C$4.25.

MONTREAL, May 9, 2023 /CNW/ – For the third edition of the Journey for Change program, Transat has partnered with Iberostar Hotels & Resorts and the University of Guelph’s School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management for an international field study program that provides 12 students with a unique experience in the Dominican Republic. The goal of this initiative is to offer a unique hands-on experience for tomorrow’s leaders in sustainable travel.

“Sustainable travel is at the heart of Transat’s corporate responsibility strategy, and I’m pleased to see that the next generation is already sensitive to these issues,” said Chrystal Healy, Vice President, Corporate Responsibility at Transat. “In addition, I’m particularly proud to partner with Iberostar this year, a brand who’s known for its concrete efforts in sustainable development. We believe in the power of numbers and hope that students will return from their stay with a renewed desire to get involved in social and environmental issues, both at home and abroad.”

The program includes a rich variety of topics and workshops, including responsible sourcing, food waste prevention and composting, coral reef rehabilitation, mangrove planting, beach clean-ups, and community centre visits.

“The strength of Journey for Change is that the destination is the classroom. Students learn about sustainable tourism while experiencing being a tourist themselves. They see first-hand the challenges that Transat and Iberostar are tackling. And together, we can find solutions to advance responsible travel,” adds Dr. Statia Elliot, professor at the School of Hospitality, Food & Tourism Management – University of Guelph.

“At Iberostar, we view sustainability as a core principle that drives and guides our business. We are committed to transforming the way people perceive travel and are constantly innovating to inspire our guests to join us in creating a better future. We are delighted to welcome students from Journey for Change, as they can learn about our responsible tourism practices and discover that there are always solutions to be found. During their visit to the Coral Lab, they will gain insight into how coral studies can aid in overcoming the challenges that climate change poses to reefs,” says Gabriel Martorell, Sustainability Director for the Americas at Iberostar.

The first Journey for Change trip took place in spring 2019 in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Both previous editions have provided an opportunity to meet local communities and tourism service providers, and to learn about the complex issues inherent in sustainable tourism at the destination.

  • Air Transat encourages Canadians to step out of their comfort zone

MONTREAL, May 2, 2023 /CNW/ – Air Transat launched today its new promotional campaign in Canada: Time to go. Encouraging Canadians to step out of their comfort zone, this advertising campaign shows that it is essential to travel in order to recharge one’s batteries and escape the monotony of everyday life.

Developed in collaboration with creative agency Sid Lee, the campaign is built around videos featuring protagonists in their routine that has gotten too comfortable: a couple asleep in front of the TV, a man working on one of his numerous motorcycles in his garage, and a woman watering hundreds of plants in her apartment. The brand’s message is directly inspired by the habits of staying at home that many have developed in an excessive way since the pandemic.

Time to go is perfectly aligned with our mission, which encourages us to benefit from the transformative power of travel – openness,” says Joseph Adamo, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at Transat. “We believe that one of the best ways to grow personally is to get out of that comfortable routine.”

“Comfort zones allow us to relax and take solace in the familiar, but sooner or later, there comes a time when we want to shake things up,” adds Brian Gill, Creative Director at Sid Lee. “Time to go is about that moment of realization when we say to ourselves: ‘I need some adventure,’ and there is no better way to expand our horizons than through travel.”

Rolled out in Quebec and Ontario, the campaign includes 30-, 15- and 6-second video ads, in addition to a radio ad. The multiplatform campaign can also be seen in online media and on various types of billboards. Most of these placements include a message contextualized to the location of the ad that encourages people to question their habits and comfort zone, and ultimately, the need to spice things up through travel.

Partnerships with local pizzerias to take the concept further

The campaign also features a creative media initiative to transpose the concept of the campaign to a concrete context of everyday life. With the help of Eat It Up Media, a pizza box using Air Transat’s colours was developed to directly address future travellers. When people order this comfort food at one of the 45 participating pizzerias in the Greater Toronto Area and Montreal, the box will include a question that will make them realize that it’s time to go, as well as share information about the promotion along with a QR code leading to the promotion page.

Time to go  promo: low prices to Europe and the United States

For the launch of its new campaign, Air Transat invites travellers to step out of their comfort zone and discover the benefits of travel by offering great prices on flights to Europe and the United States. Round-trip flights to Europe start at $799, one-way flights from Toronto to Florida start at $149, and one-way flights from Montreal to California start at $249.

  • Transat secures $100 million in additional funding

Maturity dates for debts totalling $198 million are deferred from April 2023 to April 2024

MONTRÉAL, July 29, 2022 /CNW Telbec/ – Transat A.T. Inc. (“Transat” or the “Corporation“) announced today that it has reached an agreement with Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corporation (“CEEFC”), a federal Crown corporation, to obtain $100 million in additional liquidity. In connection with the establishment of such additional funding, through the Large Employer Emergency Financing Facility (LEEFF), Transat has reached an agreement with all lenders to defer the April 2023 maturities to April 2024, as well as to defer from October 2022 to October 2023 the date by which the Corporation must meet certain financial covenants.

Such liquidity is in addition to initial financing secured on April 29, 2021, through LEEFF to help the Corporation overcome the effects of the pandemic. On March 10, 2022, Transat also received an additional $43.3 million for traveller refunds and negotiated favourable 20-month deferrals for certain key terms of the unsecured LEEFF financing agreement.

As stated by Annick Guérard, President and CEO, “This complementary financing and the changes to the existing agreements strengthen our treasury position and reinforce our financial resilience. This important financing milestone, combined with sales that have been doing well in recent months, will give us the financial flexibility to deploy our strategic plan with optimism and confidence.”

The additional credit facility made available by the Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corporation, which Transat will use as needed over the next few months, is for an amount of $100 million of which 80% is under the terms and conditions of the non-revolving and unsecured credit facility amended this past March, and 20% is under the terms and conditions of the revolving and secured credit facility.

Under the LEEFF financing, Transat issued a total of 4,687,500 warrants for the purchase of an equivalent number of Transat shares at an exercise price of $3.20 per share over a 10-year period1. The warrants are to vest in proportion to the drawings that will be made, but 50% of vested warrants will be forfeited if the loan were to be repaid in full by December 31, 2023.

The financial arrangement also provides Transat with an additional credit facility for a maximum amount of $50 million, subject to certain conditions that must be met no later than July 29, 2023, including securing additional funding from a third party. This demonstrates the Crown corporation’s renewed commitment to Transat in the implementation of its recovery plan.

In addition, the carrier will extend its Montreal-Marseille direct flights to until January 8, 2023, with two flights a week.
