MONTREAL, May 10, 2024 /CNW/ – Transat A.T. Inc. (“Transat” or the “Corporation“) announced today that it will likely not achieve its adjusted EBITDA margin1 forecast for fiscal 2024.
Persistent operational challenges related to Pratt & Whitney’s GTF1engines, market dynamics leading to downward pressure on airline unit revenues (yield), and the consequences of union strike threats, have created a particularly volatile environment. Although the situation may evolve in upcoming months, the current trend places the Corporation on a trajectory to achieve an adjusted EBITDA margin of approximately 5% for fiscal 2024.
Given these factors, the Corporation has deemed it prudent to no longer issue guidance on this metric in the future.
The Corporation will provide further information about its performance and strategies during the second quarter earnings call on June 6th.

Air Transat Flight Dispatchers Collective Agreement ended on October 31st, 2022.
“We have been very patient in trying to negotiate a new Collective Agreement with Air Transat”, said Rob King, National President, Canadian Airline Dispatchers Association. “Our Flight Dispatchers are highly trained professionals who certain deserve a contract that reflects their position of responsibility, accountability and liability as it pertains to their work,” said King. MONTRÉAL, April 7, 2024 /CNW/ – Lots of laughter and smiling faces – that’s what the 10th edition of the Premium Kids event at YUL Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, organized by ADM Aéroports de Montréal in partnership with Air Transat, was all about. This unique day allows children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or functional limitations to familiarize themselves and their families with the airport process and ease their anxiety about flying.
This year, nearly 200 participants experienced the typical airport journey, from arriving at the parking lot to passing through security, boarding an aircraft and listening to in-flight safety demonstration.
“We are delighted to once again play host to Premium Kids, an initiative that has been making a real difference to the lives of participants for 10 years and which is very close to ADM’s heart,” said Martin Massé, Vice President, Public Affairs and Sustainability at ADM. “Our organization is constantly working to meet the needs of our users by providing them with an enjoyable, safe and accessible experience in our facilities. This morning the children, accompanied by their parents, enjoyed a unique experience that gave them hope that one day they will be able to fly as a family. Thanks also to all the volunteers and our partners who made the day such a success.”
“For Air Transat, Premium Kids fulfills a very specific commitment: to make travel accessible to everyone,” added Julie Lamontagne, Chief People, Sustainability and Communications Officer at Transat. “This event is a key element in the continuous improvement of our flight operations, in particular the training and sensitization of our staff to the specific needs of certain customer groups. By seeking to understand and meet the unique needs of each traveller, we hope to contribute to a broader definition of inclusivity, a value that is fundamental to us. I join Martin Massé in sincerely thanking everyone involved in making Premium Kids a reality.”
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this event, one family even had the chance to win an Air Transat flight to one of its South destinations. In addition to the airline, which has been involved since the first edition by providing an aircraft and crew, several other partners ensure the smooth running of the event: Autisme Montréal; the Giant Steps; Transport Canada; the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA); the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA); GardaWorld; HMSHost; and Montréal Airport Marriott Hotel.
This initiative is inspired by a similar program, Wings for Autism, launched in 2011 by the Charles River Center in collaboration with the Massachusetts Port Authority (Boston-Logan International Airport). ADM became the first airport authority in Canada to implement such a program at YUL in 2013.

MONTREAL, March 14, 2024 /CNW/ – Transat A.T. Inc., a leisure travel reference worldwide, operating as an air carrier under the Air Transat brand, announced today its results for the First Quarter ended January 31, 2024.
“Transat’s first-quarter results reflect sustained demand for leisure travel. Revenues grew 17.7% year-over-year, driven by a solid traffic increase. However, the persisting speculation of a strike by flight attendants starting last November clearly affected bookings and yield for the winter season, and we are pleased that the adoption of a new collective agreement in late February removed this uncertainty. As for the operating challenges related to the Pratt & Whitney GTF2 engine issue, costs incurred, including those related to the temporary leasing of additional aircraft, applied pressure on profitability. Finally, while demand remains sound, softer yields indicate heightened consumer price sensitivity in the current macro-economic environment as well as fierce price competition, especially in the Toronto market,” said Annick Guérard, President and Chief Executive Officer of Transat.
“In recent months, several industry-wide supply chain challenges, including the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issue, have resulted in higher costs and the need to make certain capacity modifications going forward. These adjustments should limit capacity expansion to 13% in fiscal 2024, still representing a healthy increase compared to 2023. Accordingly, we now expect an adjusted EBITDA margin for the full year 2024 to be at the lower end of the range announced last December. Finally, the refinancing plan remains the organization’s top priority and discussions with stakeholders continue,” added Jean-François Pruneau, Chief Financial Officer of Transat.
First-quarter Results
For the three-month period ended January 31, 2024, revenues reached $785.5 million, up 17.7% from $667.5 million in the corresponding period a year ago. The increase reflects sustained demand for leisure travel driven by a 20% increase in traffic expressed in revenue-passenger-miles (RPM). However, this increase was mitigated by persistent speculations throughout the quarter about a potential strike by the flight attendants. Company-wide capacity was up 25% from last year, while airline unit revenues (yield) was down 3.1%.
Negative adjusted EBITDA1 stood at $8.6 million, compared with an adjusted EBITDA1 of $3.3 million a year ago. The variation is mainly due to higher operating expenses associated with capacity expansion, such as increases in the cost of providing tourism services, wages and benefits, and aircraft-related expenses, the latter also including, among other things, (i) costs related to the operating challenges caused by the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issue and (ii) an unfavorable year-over-year aircraft maintenance calendar due to the low aircraft utilization during the pandemic. These factors were partially offset by lower fuel expenses reflecting a price decline of 18% compared to last year.
Cash flow and financial position
Cash flow from operating activities amounted to $110.7 million during the First Quarter of 2024, compared with $195.1 million for the same period last year, due to a less favorable net change in non-cash working capital balances and to a greater operating loss this year. After accounting for investing activities and repayment of lease liabilities, free cash flow1 reached $39.1 million during the quarter, versus $144.2 million a year earlier.
As at January 31, 2024, cash and cash equivalents amounted to $453.3 million, compared to $467.7 million at the same date in 2023 and $435.6 million as at October 31, 2023. Cash and cash equivalents in trust or otherwise reserved mainly resulting from travel package bookings improved year-over-year reaching $612.2 million as at January 31, 2024, compared with $523.8 million at the same date in 2023.
Reflecting sound demand, customer deposits for future travel stood at an all-time record level of $1,026.9 million as at January 31, 2024, up 14% from January 31, 2023.
During the quarter, the Corporation completed the previously announced sale of an investment in a hotel in Mexico and proceeds were applied to reduce secured facilities by $20.7 million. Following this repayment, long-term debt and deferred government grant, net of cash, amounted to $352.3 million as at January 31, 2024, down from $375.3 million a year ago and from $380.1 million as at October 31, 2023.
Outlook
Early trends for the summer season indicate bookings and pricing conditions that are largely in line with the same period last year. However, as the Corporation does not foresee the same uplift in yields that was exhibited throughout the summer season last year, it will remain proactive in managing costs under its control, while actively seeking to mitigate the structural cost increases affecting the industry.
Given the current operating environment, the Corporation revised its fiscal 2024 capacity expansion plans to 13%, versus 19% previously.
Reflecting the above, the Corporation now expects its adjusted EBITDA1 margin for the full year 2024 to be at the lower end of the range of 7.5% to 9.0% announced last December. In making these forward-looking statements, the Corporation used the following assumptions for the fiscal year: weak GDP growth in Canada, an exchange rate of C$1.34 to US$1 and an average price per gallon of jet fuel of C$4.00.

MONTREAL, Feb. 26, 2024, Canadian Union of Public Employees (FTQ) /CNW/ – Air Transat’s 2,100 flight attendants have a new collective agreement that makes them the highest paid in the industry in Canada. Following information meetings held from February 19 to 22, they voted by 62,7% to accept the recommendation of federal mediators. This new contract provides for total compound salary increases of 30% over five years, i.e. from November 1, 2022 to October 31, 2027.
It also provides for the abolition of the first two salary levels, meaning that flight attendants with less than three years of seniority will immediately access the third level, which represents a significant increase in salary.
In addition, this new collective agreement will secure the number of crew seats on all flights lasting 7 hours or more and those departing Canada after 10 p.m. It will also increase the number of personal leave days and vacation days.
“It’s been a long and complex process, but we’re finally crossing the finish line with substantial pay increases for our flight attendant members. This will be an extremely well-deserved adjustment after years of effort to help the company through financial difficulties, followed by the catastrophic years of the pandemic and a period of high inflation,” noted Chantal Bourgeois, CUPE National Representative.
The Air Transat Component encompasses two local unions based at airports in Montreal (YUL) and in Toronto (YYZ). It is part of CUPE’s Airline Division, which represents more than 18,500 flight attendants employed at Air Transat, Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, Sunwing, WestJet, Encore, Calm Air, Canadian North, Pivot Airlines, Flair Airlines, PAL and Pascan.
CUPE is Canada’s largest union, with 740,000 members across the country. It represents workers in health care, emergency services, education, early learning and child care, municipalities, social services, libraries, utilities, transportation, airlines and more.
MONTREAL, Feb. 26, 2024 /CNW/ – Air Transat announces today that 62.7% of its flight attendants have voted in favour of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service mediators’ recommendation, thus ratifying the new collective agreement and effectively lifting the strike threat, putting an end to the uncertainty for travellers. The collective agreement is retroactive to November 1, 2022, and will be valid until October 31, 2027.
“Our flight attendants play a key role in Air Transat’s success, and following an unprecedented process, we are pleased to offer competitive working conditions. This outcome will enable us to continue the dialogue of the past few months and move forward. We are also grateful for the patience and trust of our customers during these uncertain times,” says Julie Lamontagne, Chief People, Communications and Sustainability Officer of Transat.
