03 DECEMBER, 2019 – FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL BY: KATE SARSFIELD, LONDON

Bombardier is stepping up its commitment to helping reduce the carbon footprint of business aviation, with its headquarters in Montreal becoming the first facility outside the USA to take delivery of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The arrival of 27,600 litres (7,300USgal) of cooking oil-based biofuel at the Dorval manufacturing plant also represents another step in the airframer’s ambition to secure a long-term supply of SAF across its global facilities, as sustainable fuel becomes more readily available.

The shipment in Montreal will fuel new deliveries of Challenger 350 and 650 business jets, but Bombardier says it will boost the supply next year to include new Global 7500, 6500 and 6000 shipments.

“We are proud to offer [SAF] for the first time at one of our Canadian facilities, and it’s only the beginning,” says David Coleal, president of Bombardier Aviation.

He says Bombardier is “working toward ensuring that the use of these fuels becomes a standard in our day-to-day operations as we do our part to reduce CO2 emissions worldwide, and meet the long-standing industry climate pledge”. In 2009, the business aviation community developed an aggressive programme in support of ICAO environmental goals. Its targets include achieving carbon-neutral growth by 2020, and a reduction in total CO2 emissions of 50% by 2050 relative to 2005.

Since 2017, Bombardier has used a supply of SAF during demonstration flights at its US facility in Hartford, Connecticut. The company also flies its biofuel-powered demonstrator fleet to major air shows and events to raise industry awareness of SAF, it says as “a mainstream, drop-in alternative to traditional jet fuel” for business aircraft.

“At Bombardier, we build our aircraft with the future in mind,” Coleal says. He cites as an example the new Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engine. “Purpose-built” for the recently certificated Global 5500 and 6500, he says the 15,125lb (67.3kN)-thrust turbofan makes long rang-twins “cleaner and more efficient, with an up to 13% fuel-burn advantage, contributing to highly favourable operating costs”.

Similarly, he says, the GE Aviation Passport engine, designed specifically for the flagship Global 7500, powers the ultra-long-range business jet “to speeds of up to Mach 0.925 with dependable reliability and greater fuel efficiency”.

The industry flagship is the 2019 recipient of the Ontario Professional Engineers Award (OPEA) for Engineering Project or Achievement, which is presented annually to a major project developed with significant input by Ontario engineers. The award, co-sponsored by the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and Professional Engineers Ontario, was presented at the OPEA gala held in Mississauga on November 16, 2019.

“Our Global 7500 business jet has redefined the limits of business aviation, and we are very proud that it is built using state-of-the-art manufacturing tools and processes at our Toronto facility,” said Michel Ouellette, Senior Vice President, Program Management and Engineering, Bombardier Aviation. “Of the string of awards this impressive aircraft has already received, this recognition from our home peers is particularly satisfying because it honours Bombardier’s world-class engineering leadership and the ground-breaking engineering efforts that helped bring the design of this technologically advanced aircraft to the market.”

The clean-sheet and innovative Global 7500 aircraft design and development involved the collaboration of more than 2,000 Bombardier engineers and suppliers. The engineering effort entailed millions of person hours invested by dozens of teams and involved coordination and teamwork of numerous major structural and systems suppliers.

Among the many design innovations that set Bombardier’s Global 7500 aircraft apart from its competitors is its advanced wing design. With its sophisticated slats and flap system, the aircraft’s wing maximizes aerodynamic efficiency and performance for improved safety and an exceptionally smooth ride. The Global 7500 aircraft also outpaces its rivals in performance, with a proven ability to fly farther, faster, and with its unique steep-approach capability, provides passengers access to challenging airports such as London City. In the cockpit, the next generation fly-by-wire technology blends advanced avionics with exceptional ergonomics and control to ensure the most complete flight envelope protection.

The design innovation extends to the manufacturing process as well. The aircraft is assembled at Bombardier’s Toronto facility using innovative and highly repeatable processes. Cutting-edge technology, such as laser-guided positioning combined with sophisticated robotics, contribute to predictable outcomes and the highest quality standards on each aircraft.

The development of the Global 7500 aircraft has positively influenced the Ontario aerospace sector in the past decade, expanding the range of experience and capabilities of engineers, technicians and technologists in the province.

In addition to the 2019 OPEA Award, the Global 7500 aircraft has been recognized as Business Jet of the Year in Robb Report’s Best of the Best 2019, winner of the 2019 Aviation Week Grand Laureate Award in the Business Aviation category and has earned a 2018 Red Dot award for design.

The newest Global aircraft are receiving strong interest from the business aviation market. Bombardier Aviation maintains a robust and industry-leading backlog of $15.3 billion with the Global 7500 forming a solid portion of that backlog, which is well distributed over the next few years.

  • Bombardier keeps 2019 delivery goal as 7500 production ramps up

News provided by FlightGlobal.com – link to full story

31 October by Jon Hemmerdinger, Boston, FlightGlobal.com

Bombardier remains confident it will reach its goal of delivering 175 to 180 aircraft in 2019, though the Montreal-based airframer must significantly boost aircraft handoffs to achieve that goal.

The company had delivered 117 aircraft in the first nine months of the year, including 90 business jets and 27 commercial aircraft, equating to a rate of 39 aircraft quarterly.

But those deliveries included 20 Q400 turboprops – a programme Bombardier sold to De Havilland Aircraft of Canada in June.

The company will need to deliver 58 aircraft in the fourth quarter to reach hit the 175 mark before year end.

Speaking during the company’s third-quarter earnings call on 31 October, Bombardier chief executive Alain Bellemare said the airframer is “on plan” to hit the 175-180 aircraft-delivery goal.

Those deliveries will likely include at least 15 of the company’s largest business jet, the Global 7500, he says, adding that Bombardier has a number of 7500s approaching completion.

“We now have over 20 Global 7500s in our completion centre,” says Bellemare. “Our assembly operation in Toronto is also full, with over 20 aircraft at different stages of completion.”

Bombardier’s aviation unit generated $1.6 billion in third quarter revenue, up 4% year-on-year, though the unit’s profit before interest and taxes slipped 27% to $96 million.

In the third quarter, the company delivered 37 aircraft, including 31 business jets and six CRJ regional jets. It delivered 36 aircraft during the same period of 2018.

Bombardier’s business aircraft order backlog was worth $15.3 billion at the end of the third quarter, up about 7% year-on-year. Its commercial aircraft backlog stood at $2.6 billion at the end of September.

The company is progressing with the sale of the CRJ programme to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, a deal Bombardier expects will close in the first half of 2020.

Bombardier holds outstanding orders for 28 CRJs and expects CRJ production will cease in the second half of next year. The airframer has said it is not taking new CRJ orders.

Also on 31 October, Bombardier announced it plans to sell significant aerospace assets to Wichita-based aircraft fuselage and major component manufacturer Spirit AeroSystems.

Under the deal, Spirit will purchase Bombardier’s aerostructures and aftermarket assets in Belfast, where the company makes A220 wings, and facilities in Casablanca and Dallas. Spirit will pay $500 million for the assets, and Bombardier expects the deal will close in the first half of 2020.

That sale reflects Bombardier ongoing shift away from commercial aviation and toward increased focus on business aircraft.

“We achieved another key milestone to building a lean, efficient and strong Bombardier business aircraft enterprise,” Bellemare says.

05 August, 2019, FlightGlobal.com, by Dominic Perry, London

Bombardier says it still plans to deliver 15-20 Global 7500s this year, despite having so far handed over only three of the GE Aviation Passport-powered business jets.

Three more examples of the ultra-long-range twin will be shipped in the third quarter, said Bombardier chief executive Alain Bellemare, speaking on a 1 August half-year results call, with the remainder to follow in the final three months of 2019.

    Asset Image
    Bombardier

“We have 16 aircraft right now that are in our completion centre here in Montreal, and it’s really progressing well. Actually completion is progressing little bit better than planned, so our level of confidence is good,” he says.

Bellemare says that as a brand-new aircraft – having entered service in late 2018 – there was always going to be some uncertainty around the Global 7500’s delivery profile, but adds that overall “we’re making very good, solid progress”.

Bellemare says that 2019 deliveries are “backend loaded”, to allow a smooth service entry for the new jet, ensure its performance and minimise “the risk for potential retrofit”.

Bellemare praises the jet’s “tremendous capabilities”, noting that it continues to set records “in terms of range, in terms of speed”.

As production continues to ramp up, deliveries should rise to 35-40 Global 7500s in 2020, he adds.

Overall business jet deliveries stood at 35 in the quarter, a one-unit increase over the same period a year earlier, and included two light jets, 17 midsize jets and 16 large jets.

“Our [business aviation] financial performance was right on plan for the second quarter and is tracking to our full-year guidance,” Bellemare says.

Certification and delivery of the re-engiend Global 5500 and 6500 – both powered by new Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engines – are still “on track” for later this year.

Bellemare points out that Bombardier is continuing to “enhance” its product portfolio, pointing to the recent launch of the Learjet 75 Liberty, a lower-price, six-passenger version of the superlight jet.

Bombardier announced that its Global 7500 aircraft is the largest, most spacious, purpose-built business jet to operate out of Gstaad’s Saanen airport in Switzerland – one of the most notable airfields located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, requiring short-field performance – showcasing its true four-zone cabin during an event earlier this month before continuing its journey to the Middle-East and reaching Dubai directly from Gstaad Saanen airport.

“This demonstration strengthens the Global 7500 jet as a jet that simply has no peer in terms of combining size and real-world capabilities,” said Peter Likoray, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales and Marketing, Bombardier Business Aircraft. “Not only can it access demanding airfields in hot and/or high locations, it also delivers uncompromising value to customers under any conditions, at any time, without the need for tailwinds and a signature smooth ride through exceptional wing flexibility.”

The Global 7500 aircraft’s advanced wing technology generates unprecedented amounts of extra lift on takeoff and approach due to its sophisticated slats and flap system. It also maximizes aerodynamic efficiency and increases performance all the while improving safety and offering a smoother ride. The Global 7500 jet’s no compromise design makes it the largest business jet with the short-field performance and steep approach capabilities allowing it to operate out of demanding airfields such as Gstaad’s Saanen airport or London City Airport, connecting passengers to key regions in Europe and the Middle East non-stop*.

Beyond being recently recognized as Business Jet of the Year in Robb Report’s Best of the Best 2019 and Grand Laureate winner of the 62nd Annual Laureate Awards in the Business Aviation category, the Global 7500 jet offers Bombardier’s signature smooth ride and a spaciousness that is unique among business jets. The aircraft offers the most innovative features such as the recently unveiled Soleil lighting system, the industry’s most advanced cabin lighting technology. Designed and developed exclusively for the Global 7500 aircraft, the innovative Soleil lighting system is aviation’s first circadian rhythm-based cabin lighting technology, and it introduces the revolutionary Dynamic Daylight Simulation feature, which can help combat jet lag. The Global 7500 business jet also offers the patented Nuage seat, meticulously designed for maximum comfort, which introduces an all-new, ergonomically-perfected deep recline position – unavailable on any other business aircraft.

Also showcased in Gstaad, was the best-selling super-midsize market leader, Challenger 350 aircraft jet, which offers customers unrivaled cabin comfort along with Bombardier’s signature smooth ride. Continuously improving the segment-defining aircraft, Bombardier recently announced a series of enhancements to the Challenger 350 aircraft, further underscoring its leadership position in the super mid-size segment. These new enhancements include available compact Head-up Display (HUD) and Enhanced Vision System (EVS), class-leading cabin-sound-proofing technology, and improved cockpit aesthetics. A performance improvement package also allows the aircraft to fly up to 1,500 NM farther out of short runways, complementing its steep approach certifications awarded by international regulatory bodies including EASA, FAA and TC. To further demonstrate its performance capabilities, the Challenger 350 set a world speed record in its class, flying from Gstaad’s Saanen airport to Malaga in Spain in 2 hours 4 minutes at an average cruise speed of Mach 0.82. This achievement is another example of the impressive speed, climb and field performance capabilities of the super midsize Challenger 350 aircraft, recognized as the world’s most delivered business jet of the last decade.
