“We are further cementing Air Canada’s global network as one of the most far-reaching from the North American continent. The addition of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, reflects our continued ambition to offer our customers and Aeroplan members an exceptional, diversified array of unique Air Canada destinations. Enabled by the next-generation capabilities of our incoming A321XLR aircraft, travellers on the only non-stop service from North America now have convenient options to reach the island renowned for its stunning volcanic scenery, a rich array of bucket-list activities and year-round warm weather,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, and President of Cargo at Air Canada.

“Air Canada is also expanding flights into Latin America from Vancouver, enabled by growing A220 and Air Canada Rouge bases that unlock sought-after, non-stop service to Costa Rica and Mexico, including to Mazatlán, a new Mexican destination. In addition, we are adding Roatán, Santo Domingo and Mérida to our global network, while introducing exciting new leisure options for our customers in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Quebec and Halifax. Together with our previously announced new services to Sapporo and Quito, and our new leisure options from Calgary to Mexico, Air Canada continues to deepen its industry-leading network, proudly connecting Canada globally,” he concluded.

The CEO of Tenerife Tourism, Dimple Melwani, said “The arrival of Air Canada with direct flights from Toronto and Montreal is a strategic boost for Tenerife, consolidating our destination as a global leader and bringing us closer to a high-value traveler for the island. This connection with Air Canada affords us the opportunity to give Tenerife a boost in these markets with growing demand, not only as a vacation destination, but also as a global hub in strategic sectors such as business and corporate tourism, the audiovisual and cultural industries, as well as cruise tourism with multi-stop itineraries.”

According to Melwani, “The island has spent several years working to improve its positioning in these markets, whose interest in Tenerife continues to grow, although there is still a long way to go. This direct flight makes it possible for Tenerife to reinforce our position as a gateway to Europe for North American travelers, while raising the profile of our cultural, culinary and leisure offering in priority source markets on the current roadmap. We are confident that this connection will increase the visibility of Tenerife as a comprehensive and competitive destination over other international options.”

Air Canada’s Tenerife flights will be operated with the airline’s brand-new Airbus A321XLR aircraft featuring lie-flat seats in the Business Class cabin, bringing a wide-body experience to a narrow-body jet. With capacity for 182 passengers in a configuration of 14 Signature Class seats and 168 Economy Class seats, the A321XLR also marks the beginning of the next era in Air Canada’s cabin interiors with the introduction of a new design standard for onboard experience.

  • Porter Airlines to Be Launch Carrier at New Montreal Metropolitan Airport

12 nonstop routes from coast to coast starting June 15

original Porter Airlines to be launch carrier at new Montreal Metropolitan Airport

LONGUEUIL, Quebec–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Porter Airlines is transforming air travel in Montreal by bringing its elevated passenger experience to the revitalized Montreal Metropolitan Airport (MET). Service begins on June 15, with 12 routes being introduced across Canada.

Passengers flying from MET will step into a unique, modern terminal featuring an open concept departure lounge with comfortable seating throughout. YHU Infrastructure Partners developed and operates the new terminal, focusing on creating a more enjoyable airport experience that puts passengers at ease. Its compact and efficient design saves travellers substantial time when departing or arriving.

Located in Longueuil on Montreal’s South Shore, the airport’s location offers a more convenient air travel option for greater than 50% of the region’s population and provides easy access to downtown and Montreal’s central neighbourhoods. MET, formerly called Saint-Hubert Airport, will be a significant boost for the local economy, including the travel and tourism sectors.

Montreal has been a central part of Porter’s strategy since it began flying to Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) when the airline was founded in 2006. MET’s opening allows for a rapid 91% expansion of Porter’s peak summer capacity in the region, including six new non-stop destinations. There are as many as 244 weekly departures from the city–138 from MET and 106 from YUL.

New flights at MET complement Porter’s continuing commitment to Montreal-Trudeau. By serving both airports, Porter is offering passengers more choice, flexibility, and convenience in selecting their flights and destinations.

In the last three years, Porter has introduced 52 E195-E2s into its fleet. This enabled rapid growth throughout North America, including transcontinental flights in Canada and the U.S., plus service to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. The airline continues expanding its network, which currently includes 112 routes across 49 year-round and seasonal destinations.

Its arrival at MET is part of this plan to have an even stronger presence across Canada. A partnership with regional airline Pascan, based at MET, also provides improved connectivity throughout Quebec’s regions and the Maritimes. Passengers are able to purchase a single ticket that includes flights on both airlines, with seamless baggage connections.

Porter has earned recognition as a top airline within North America. It is celebrated for a refined and caring service culture, complementary premium snacks, a choice of beverages, including free beer and wine served in real glassware, plus free, fast WiFi on its E195-E2 aircraft. The airline’s generous service, combined with MET’s exceptional passenger experience, will elevate the art of travelling.

“The new MET terminal development represents an exceptional private investment in transportation infrastructure that Greater Montreal will benefit from for generations. Porter is bringing a wide range of flight options to the airport, along with a genuine commitment to the community. Our philosophy is to treat everyone with care and this is perfectly complemented by the overall travel experience passengers will enjoy at MET. We are eager to begin this journey with an unprecedented amount of new service.”
    – Michael Deluce, CEO, Porter Airlines

“MET is very proud to count on Porter Airlines as a leading strategic partner in enhancing connectivity for Greater Montreal across Canada. With Porter’s strong presence at MET, the opening of the new terminal is built on solid foundations and promises a reliable and forward-looking future for the greatest benefit of passengers.”
    – Yanic Roy, CEO, MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport

“As Porter prepares to begin operations at MET, passengers will quickly notice a different kind of airport experience. The terminal has been designed to make every step before boarding simpler, faster and more comfortable — from arrival at the Terminal to the gate. With its compact layout and a simple, streamlined passenger flow, travellers can move through the terminal with ease and spend more time relaxing before their flight. Together with Porter’s elevated onboard service, this creates a seamless and refreshing travel experience.”

  • Calgary to host global aviation leaders as Word Cargo Symposium comes to Canada in 2027

CALGARY – Calgary has been selected to host the International Air Travel Association’s (IATA) World Cargo Symposium in March 2027, marking a significant milestone for the city and showcasing Calgary and Alberta’s growing role as a centre for aviation logistics and global trade.

The World Cargo Symposium is the air cargo industry’s leading international conference, bringing together airline executives, logistics providers, regulators and innovators from around the world. The event helps shape how goods move globally – everything from food and medical supplies to e-commerce, manufacturing and live animals – and influences the future of resilient, secure and sustainable supply chains.

“Calgary has emerged as a strategic North American gateway where air, rail and road networks converge in Western Canada,” says Chris Dinsdale, President and CEO of Calgary Airports. “Being chosen by IATA to host the World Cargo Symposium reinforces our role as a strategic hub for cargo and logistics. It signals that Calgary is not just participating in global trade, we’re helping shape its future.”

At the centre of Calgary’s aviation ecosystem is YYC Calgary International Airport, which supports more than 6,000 aviation-related jobs on the airport campus, generates over $500 million annually for the regional economy, and seamlessly connects Alberta businesses to global markets. More than 70 per cent of Alberta’s air cargo moves through YYC each year.

Beyond the airport, our city is home to a dynamic and growing aviation sector that includes airlines, cargo and logistics operators, training institutions and aerospace companies. Together, this ecosystem supports jobs, attracts investment and drives economic diversification across the region.

“Tourism Calgary is thrilled to welcome one of the largest and most prestigious events in the global air cargo industry – the World Cargo Symposium. Hosting this event signals our city’s strength as a leader in aviation and transportation,” says Alisha Reynolds, President & CEO of Tourism Calgary. “This win also highlights how meetings and conventions, combined with our Team Calgary approach, create opportunities beyond the conference itself – opening doors for our economy, advancing transportation innovation, and strengthening Calgary’s global brand.”

Hosting the World Cargo Symposium is both a statement of confidence in the future of aviation in our region and an opportunity to showcase Calgary on a global stage. The event brings more than a thousand international delegates to the city and highlights Calgary’s capabilities as a trusted, efficient and innovative cargo hub in Canada.

It also reflects a broader shift in Alberta’s economy, from one historically centred on resources to an economy increasingly supported by transportation, trade, innovation and global connectivity. While air cargo is often invisible to the public, it is essential to everyday life and economic resilience, and Calgary’s aviation sector plays a critical role in keeping communities and industries moving.

  • YYC Calgary International Airport welcomed 19.4 million passengers in 2025

    5 February 2026

CALGARY – With 19.4 million journeys in 2025, YYC Calgary International Airport grew for the fourth consecutive year, surpassing the previous record of 18.9 million set in 2024. 2025’s passenger volume represents more than 500,000 additional travellers year over year, reflecting continued demand for travel to and from Alberta.

“More travellers through YYC means more opportunity for our city and province – from tourism and trade to innovation and investment,” says Chris Dinsdale, Chief Executive Officer. “We’re proud of the work our teams and partners do every day to deliver safe, smooth and welcoming journeys, and we continue to invest in YYC to keep pace with the growth we’re seeing across Calgary and Alberta.”

Together with our airline partners, YYC connected the region to 108 destinations in 2025, including 15 new routes launched throughout the year.

2025 also brought historic summer volumes. For the first time, we saw more than two million passengers travel through YYC per month during July and August. As passenger traffic grows, Calgary Airports continues to advance major projects that improve the guest experience and support long-term growth, including the completion of the West Runway Rehabilitation project, opening Phase 1 of YYC’s Centralized Security Screening area, announcing the YYC AeroNex aviation hub, and breaking ground on a new engine maintenance facility, built in partnership with Lufthansa Technik.

Growth isn’t slowing down. In the first month of 2026, Calgary Airports and its airline partners announced two new destinations for 2026: São Paolo, Brazil (operated by WestJet) and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (operated by new airline partner, Etihad Airways), expanding choice for travellers. Both destinations represent milestones for our province – the first non-stop route to South America, as well as the first non-stop route to the Middle East, strengthening YYC’s global reach. In addition to these two new routes, Air Canada is adding more connectivity to sunny destinations out of YYC – Cancun and Puerto Vallarta – with service scheduled to begin in December.

    • New Calgary services to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta launch December 2026
    • Builds on new Vancouver-Sapporo route announced earlier, the only non-stop flights from North America to Hokkaido

MONTRÉAL, Jan. 28, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Air Canada today announced a strategically expanded winter network that includes the addition of Quito to its network, year-round service to Manchester and Copenhagen, two sun destinations from Calgary, and increased winter services to Latin America destinations. These winter route expansions follow the airline’s plans announced earlier this month to launch the only non-stop flights from North America to Sapporo.

New flights to Quito from Montréal and Toronto start December 2026

“With a comprehensive network spanning all six inhabited continents, Air Canada’s expanded winter schedule further cements our hubs as premier global gateways facilitating fast, convenient travel. These exciting new additions and enhancements are a catalyst to facilitating tourism, trade and connectivity, and deliver more compelling opportunities for our customers and Aeroplan Members to travel almost anywhere in the world to, from or via Canada,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, and President of Cargo at Air Canada.

“We are continuing our strategic expansion into Latin America, taking advantage of continued demand strength and cargo opportunities, while leveraging a new Airbus A321 XLR base at our Toronto-Pearson global hub to enable year-round service to Copenhagen and Manchester. We are also capitalizing on growing demand and Vancouver’s unique geography to add our first-ever service to Sapporo, the only non-stop from North America to this world-recognized winter leisure destination, while bringing two new options for our brand loyal customers in Calgary seeking out the warmth of Mexico’s beaches,” he concluded.

Flights are available for purchase now at aircanada.com

Quito, Ecuador’s capital known for its rich history, will be served three times per week from Montréal, and one flight per week from Toronto, both starting in early December onboard a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with a choice of Signature Class, Premium Economy and Economy cabins. Air Canada’s flights to Quito have been designed to connect at both its Toronto and Montreal global hubs to facilitate convenient, easy travel to and from North America and Europe.

In South America, Air Canada is expanding its schedule to Brazil, Peru and Chile, with earlier starts and more frequencies on services to Rio and Lima as well as its newly-launched flights between Montreal and Santiago. Into Colombia, Air Canada’s flights to Bogota will operate onboard the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet featuring a three-cabin configuration offering the airline’s industry-recognized Signature Class cabin with lie-flat seating.

Flights from Toronto to Manchester and Copenhagen will become year-round as of October, further building scale at Air Canada’s primary global hub. Both routes will be operated onboard the airline’s newest fleet type, the Airbus A321XLR featuring the first Air Canada narrow-body aircraft to offer Signature Class lie-flat seats. These additions are enabled by the airline’s new Airbus A321 XLR base at Toronto-Pearson, complementing a previously announced base at Montreal-Trudeau.

Air Canada’s customers in Calgary will now be able to fly non-stop to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta as of December. Operated with Air Canada Rouge’s fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, featuring premium and economy cabins, free beer, wine and premium Canadian snacks for all customers, plus fast, free wi-fi for all Aeroplan Members**, flights to Cancun will be offered four times per week, with three flights a week to Puerto Vallarta.

  • Centralized Security Screening arrives at YYC Calgary International Airport

    10 December 2025

CALGARY – Travellers flying out of YYC Calgary International Airport now have a simpler, more streamlined start to their journey. Today, Phase One of YYC’s new Centralized Passenger Security Screening area opened to guests travelling domestically out of YYC, marking a milestone in a multi-year initiative to enhance the guest experience and modernize the terminal while improving operational performance and preparing for long-term passenger growth.

The new screening area brings three separate security screening points into one purpose-built, scalable operation designed in partnership with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). By consolidating screening into a single flexible space to meet the demands of a growing population and evolving security and technological requirements, YYC strengthens its position as a leading air transport hub in Canada.

“Centralized Security Screening is a foundational investment in the future of YYC – it’s about building the airport Calgary will need in the years ahead,” says Chris Miles, Chief Operating Officer for Calgary Airports. “By reimagining our security infrastructure, we’re unlocking capacity, streamlining operations and creating space for our partners and community to grow.”

This is a project that enables greater throughput and a more efficient screening process that will accommodate a projected 40 per cent increase in passenger flow through YYC over the next decade. The infrastructure behind the scenes is built with long-term growth in mind, with a flexible layout that allows for additional screening lanes as passenger traffic and carrier networks expand.

“In partnership with the Calgary Airport Authority, we are proud to bring CT X-ray technology to Canadians – ensuring the highest standards of security while making the screening experience more efficient. The new centralized screening checkpoint has enabled CATSA to install this technology across seven screening lines, with room to expand. This innovation represents an advancement in aviation security, using 3D imaging to improve threat detection and streamline the screening process.” Neil Parry, President and Chief Executive Officer (interim)

Centralized Security Screening offers a calmer, more spacious environment with modern amenities, clear sightlines, dedicated accessibility features and support for guests with visible and non-visible disabilities. The design includes a dedicated family and accessible screening line, giving travellers who need a little more time the ability to move at their pace, creating a less stressful and more predictable experience for all travellers.

As Phase One enters full operation and construction begins on Phase Two for increased capacity, Calgary Airports and CATSA will continue monitoring performance and plan for the future to meet the evolving needs of partners and guests.
