  • Edmonton International Airport Supporting Future Growth with North Tower Redevelopment Project

May 22, 2026 (Edmonton, AB) – Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is moving forward with the redevelopment of its North Tower, a significant investment in modernizing terminal infrastructure, improving safety and strengthening the airport’s long-term operational resilience.

    Rendering of new North Tower

The 63,000-square-foot North Tower redevelopment will be delivered by  Clark Builders . The project includes safety upgrades, improvements to the building envelope, modernization of elevators, refreshed interior spaces and new infrastructure to support future tenant fit-outs. Located in a highly visible area of the terminal, the redevelopment represents an important step in preparing YEG for future passenger and business growth.

YEG’s North Tower first opened in 1963 and hosted the airport’s corporate offices and air traffic control tower until the completion of the current Central Office Tower (COT) built as  part of YEG’s 2012 Capital Expansion.

Travelers should expect additional construction activity starting May 25, including alternating lane closures on the Departures level. Visitors are encouraged to use the South Pedway or ground level to connect to/from the terminal, and follow the posted pedestrian, traffic and construction signage. Additional staff will be on site to help with navigation. While we expect minimal delays, we recommend travelers give themselves a little extra time and arrive early.

“These improvements are essential to ensure YEG continues to meet the needs of our passengers, partners and the regions we serve,” said Peter Agnew, Vice President, Infrastructure & Facilities. “While there will be some short-term impacts from construction around the airport, this work supports long-term improvements to safety, reliability and the overall experience for passengers. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we invest in infrastructure that will benefit travelers and the region for years to come.”

To mitigate delays due to construction and some impacts to Arrivals Paid parking, YEG encourages drivers to plan ahead and consider alternative options:

    • Arrive early.
    • If you are picking someone up, use the Park & Wait lot and only enter the Arrivals Free curb once your traveler is ready to be picked up.
    • Park in the Parkade if you plan to leave your vehicle and enter the terminal.
    • Avoid stopping or parking in unauthorized areas, which can cause congestion and delays.

For the latest information on parking and construction updates, travelers are encouraged to visit flyyeg.com.

  • Edmonton International Airport is Leading the Way in Sustainable Winter Operations

April 22, 2026 (Edmonton, AB) – Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is advancing its leadership in clean energy innovation with a hydrogen/diesel dual-fuel pilot project for runway snow sweepers. Officials from YEG provided an update on the airport’s hydrogen initiatives today at the Canadian Hydrogen Convention in Edmonton.

Photo of the hydrogen dual fuel snow sweeper

In partnership with Diesel Tech Industries and Alberta Innovates as technology and industry collaborators, YEG is testing the use of hydrogen alongside diesel in heavy-duty airside equipment. The project marks the first time this type of dual-fuel application is being piloted in the world.

The initiative focuses on high-output snow sweepers that operate in extreme winter conditions, where reducing emissions has historically been challenging. By integrating hydrogen into existing diesel engines, YEG is researching how to lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduce fuel consumption and demonstrate a practical pathway to decarbonize airport ground operations.

Unlike fully hydrogen-powered systems that require new infrastructure, the dual-fuel approach allows for immediate implementation by retrofitting existing equipment. This makes it a cost-effective and scalable solution for airports and industrial operators looking to reduce emissions in the near term.

The pilot has been collecting operational and performance data through the winter season, including fuel efficiency, system reliability, operator experience and performance in cold weather conditions. These insights will inform future decisions on expanding hydrogen use across YEG’s fleet and contribute to broader industry knowledge.

“This is about taking real, practical steps to reduce emissions in some of the most demanding parts of our operation,” said Myron Keehn, President and CEO, Edmonton International Airport. “By introducing hydrogen dual-fuel technology in equipment that operates in extreme winter conditions, we are demonstrating that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. YEG is proud to serve as a real-world testbed for solutions that can be scaled across the aviation sector and beyond.”

“We are proud to partner with YEG and Alberta Innovates on new use cases for how hydrogen can be integrated into heavy-duty operations today and in the future,” said Rebecca Goldsack, COO Diesel Tech Industries.

This project is part of YEG’s broader hydrogen strategy, supported through its Airport City Sustainability Campus, a living lab environment where industry, government and academic partners collaborate to test and scale clean energy solutions.

Additionally, YEG’s Hydrogen Hub positions the Edmonton Region as a global leader in hydrogen innovation. The Hub supports regional hydrogen corridors, fleet integration and economic viability modelling, positioning YEG as a real-world testbed for clean aviation operations. The Edmonton region produces roughly 60-65% of Canada’s total hydrogen supply. As of early 2026, the region produces more than 2.5 million tonnes of hydrogen annually.

As global aviation continues to prioritize decarbonization, airports are playing an increasingly important role in advancing both groundside and future airside hydrogen applications. YEG’s work is pushing Edmonton and Alberta as leaders in the emerging hydrogen economy.

Video footage of the dual-fuel sweeper is available here.

According to Melwani, “The island has spent several years working to improve its positioning in these markets, whose interest in Tenerife continues to grow, although there is still a long way to go. This direct flight makes it possible for Tenerife to reinforce our position as a gateway to Europe for North American travelers, while raising the profile of our cultural, culinary and leisure offering in priority source markets on the current roadmap. We are confident that this connection will increase the visibility of Tenerife as a comprehensive and competitive destination over other international options.”

With capacity for 182 passengers in a configuration of 14 Signature Class seats and 168 Economy Class seats, the A321XLR also marks the beginning of the next era in Air Canada’s cabin interiors with the introduction of a new design standard for onboard experience.

    **Seasonal route

All flights are now available for booking at flyporter.com and through travel agencies.

MET will be served by both the 78-seat De Havilland Dash 8-400 and the 132-seat Embraer E195-E2. There are no middle seats on any Porter flight.

Montreal has been a central part of Porter’s strategy since it began flying to Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) when the airline was founded in 2006. MET’s opening allows for a rapid 91% expansion of Porter’s peak summer capacity in the region, including six new non-stop destinations. There are as many as 244 weekly departures from the city–138 from MET and 106 from YUL.

New flights at MET complement Porter’s continuing commitment to Montreal-Trudeau. By serving both airports, Porter is offering passengers more choice, flexibility, and convenience in selecting their flights and destinations.

In the last three years, Porter has introduced 52 E195-E2s into its fleet. This enabled rapid growth throughout North America, including transcontinental flights in Canada and the U.S., plus service to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. The airline continues expanding its network, which currently includes 112 routes across 49 year-round and seasonal destinations.

Its arrival at MET is part of this plan to have an even stronger presence across Canada. A partnership with regional airline Pascan, based at MET, also provides improved connectivity throughout Quebec’s regions and the Maritimes. Passengers are able to purchase a single ticket that includes flights on both airlines, with seamless baggage connections.

Porter has earned recognition as a top airline within North America. It is celebrated for a refined and caring service culture, complementary premium snacks, a choice of beverages, including free beer and wine served in real glassware, plus free, fast WiFi on its E195-E2 aircraft. The airline’s generous service, combined with MET’s exceptional passenger experience, will elevate the art of travelling.

“The new MET terminal development represents an exceptional private investment in transportation infrastructure that Greater Montreal will benefit from for generations. Porter is bringing a wide range of flight options to the airport, along with a genuine commitment to the community. Our philosophy is to treat everyone with care and this is perfectly complemented by the overall travel experience passengers will enjoy at MET. We are eager to begin this journey with an unprecedented amount of new service.”
    – Michael Deluce, CEO, Porter Airlines

“MET is very proud to count on Porter Airlines as a leading strategic partner in enhancing connectivity for Greater Montreal across Canada. With Porter’s strong presence at MET, the opening of the new terminal is built on solid foundations and promises a reliable and forward-looking future for the greatest benefit of passengers.”
    – Yanic Roy, CEO, MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport

“As Porter prepares to begin operations at MET, passengers will quickly notice a different kind of airport experience. The terminal has been designed to make every step before boarding simpler, faster and more comfortable — from arrival at the Terminal to the gate. With its compact layout and a simple, streamlined passenger flow, travellers can move through the terminal with ease and spend more time relaxing before their flight. Together with Porter’s elevated onboard service, this creates a seamless and refreshing travel experience.”
    – Charles Roberge, president and CEO, YHU Infrastructure Partners

  • Edmonton International Airport Demonstrates Resilience, Closing in on Pre-Pandemic Passenger Levels in 2025

A graphic of YEG Stats for 2025

March 13, 2026, (Edmonton, AB) — In an era marked by economic volatility, geopolitical tension and rapidly evolving travel behaviors, Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is closing in on landmark recovery as passenger volumes have nearly returned to pre-pandemic levels.

In 2025, YEG served 8.14 million passengers — a 2.8 per cent increase over 2024, just shy of the 8.15 million passengers served in 2019. This achievement reflects not only sustained demand and disciplined growth, but a resilient strategy rooted in long-term partnerships, infrastructure investment and a commitment to the region’s economic future.

While recovery across global markets remains uneven, YEG’s progress has been anchored by robust domestic travel demand. In 2025:

    • Domestic passenger volumes grew 6.2 per cent, serving as the backbone of YEG’s passenger growth
    • Total seat capacity increased 6.9 per cent, with notable growth in domestic routes including new service to Kamloops and Hamilton.
    • While transborder traffic experienced a decrease of 15 percent amid broader cross-border travel headwinds, YEG maintained important US connections and welcomed new service to Houston, Chicago and Salt Lake City.
    • International travel remained steady with a 1.1 per cent increase year over year.
    • The announcement of the return of non-stop service to Reykjavik, Iceland beginning June 2026 signals growing confidence from airline partners in YEG’s international potential.

Airlines including WestJet, Flair, United Airlines, KLM, Porter Airlines, Air North and Air Tindi expanded their presence at YEG, strengthening links for leisure, business and essential travel. YEG offers flights with 11 airlines to over 50 non-stop destinations.

“Reaching near pre-pandemic passenger levels against a backdrop of uncertainty and shifting travel behaviors is a milestone we are proud of — and one we did not arrive at by chance. We made deliberate decisions: staying agile, maintaining discipline and never losing sight of the long view. The growth we are seeing at YEG is a direct reflection of the strength of our partnerships, the confidence our airline partners continue to place in us and an unwavering commitment to driving economic prosperity for this region.”- Myron Keehn, President & CEO, Edmonton International Airport

This progress comes as YEG continues to generate significant economic value, supporting $5.4 billion in total economic output and 22,690 jobs in 2025, reinforcing the airport’s role as a critical economic engine for the region.

The 65 Avenue and QEII interchange , completed in 2025, now provides enhanced connectivity between YEG, major highway infrastructure and adjacent industrial lands. This key piece of transportation infrastructure ties in to more than 2,000 acres of southern land planned for the International Cargo Hub (ICH), a transformational development underway designed to expand cargo operations and logistics growth.
