    Airport Prepares to Uplift Holiday Travel with Helpful Tips and Festive Activities

    December 2, 2024 (Edmonton, AB) – By the end of 2024, Edmonton International Airport (YEG) expects to reach 7.8 million passengers, marking a 4.3 per cent increase compared to last year and 96 per cent of pre-pandemic passenger volumes.

    During the upcoming holiday season, thousands of passengers will be travelling through YEG compared to average volumes, and the busiest days are expected to be December 20, 23 and 27. Some of the most popular routes travellers will be flying to during the holiday season include Cancun, Phoenix and Puerta Vallarta.

    The Departures and Arrivals roadways at YEG are now open to the public after construction, allowing passengers to be dropped off and picked up directly at the terminal. Over the next month, YEG is offering several uplifting festive activities throughout the terminal. Travellers can look forward to live music, holiday choirs, roaming carollers, a pop-up craft station, a caricaturist and a host of other surprise activities.

    To help passengers navigate the busy season, YEG and its partners, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) and Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), provide helpful airport travel tips.

    Arrive Early: Arrive two hours before domestic departures and three hours before international departures.

    Check Flight Status: Visit your airline’s website or flyeia.com before arriving at the airport.

    Check-in Online: Use your airline’s online check-in services, download boarding passes ahead of time and tag bags at an airport kiosk.

    Pack Smart: Check your airline’s website to confirm baggage allowances and follow all Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) baggage requirements.

    Leave Gifts Unwrapped: If travelling with gifts, leave them unwrapped as they may need to be inspected.

    Book a Spot in the Security Line: Jump to the front of the line at Central Security by booking with YEG EXPRESS, available between 4:30 am and 12:30 pm daily.

    Airline introduces two new transborder routes to Salt Lake City and Chicago

    EDMONTON, AB, Nov. 18, 2024 /CNW/ – Today WestJet announced its largest summer 2025 Edmonton schedule to date, detailing nonstop service to 11 transborder, 20 domestic and two sun destinations. The schedule features new direct connectivity to Salt Lake City and Chicago along with numerous frequency increases on key domestic routes. With the noteworthy additions to WestJet’s growing Edmonton network, the airline will enhance its overall seat capacity in Alberta’s capital by 23 per cent compared to summer 2024.

    Edmonton to grow 10 per cent into the United States

    Starting next summer, WestJet will be growing its transborder network from nine to 11 destinations by adding Chicago and Salt Lake City to the Edmonton schedule. Through WestJet’s service to Salt Lake City, guests will have exclusive access to the Delta Air Lines hub, unlocking more than 85 American destinations with the convenience of one ticket and through-checked baggage.

    Edmonton domestic network grows 25 per cent, compared to summer 2024

    Servicing Edmonton’s growing business community and leisure travel needs, WestJet has increased capacity on some of the city’s most desirable domestic routes in advance of the summer travel season, most notably with two additional daily flights to both Toronto and Vancouver, and one additional daily flight to each of Comox, Grande Prairie, Kelowna, Ottawa, Regina, Saskatoon and Winnipeg.

  • WestJet’s summer 2025 schedule secures airline’s position as Ontario’s second-leading airline with new Sudbury route and increased frequency

    TORONTO, Nov. 18, 2024 /CNW/ -Today WestJet published its summer 2025 schedule, including domestic seat capacity growth of 14 per cent out of Toronto Pearson and 36 per cent out of Ottawa, compared to summer 2024. These strategic service increases will optimize seamless and reliable connectivity for business travellers between Ontario and Western Canada, and for leisure travellers to sun destinations in the United States and Caribbean. In addition, the airline is returning its service to Sudbury for the first time since 2018, unlocking new connectivity between Northern Ontario and WestJet’s global hub in Calgary.

    Enhanced domestic, transborder and intercontinental connections pave the way for cross-country economic growth and expanded opportunities for business and leisure travel

    WestJet builds trade and tourism potential with enhanced access to Delta hubs

    WestJet is growing transborder service by 11 per cent this summer, operating to 29 airports with over 900 weekly departures, and continuing to enhance its connectivity from across Canada to Delta Air Line’s major U.S. hubs. Through WestJet’s longstanding partnership with Delta, guests connecting through Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York City, Salt Lake City and Seattle will gain access to a vast network of U.S. destinations on a single purchased ticket with check-in for all flights at first departure, baggage tagged to their final destination and lounge access for select guests.

    Continued expansion to Europe and Asia

    Growing its transatlantic service from Eastern Canada, WestJet will introduce non-stop connectivity between St. John’s and Paris and welcome back service between Halifax and Paris and St. John’s and Dublin, this summer. Additionally, WestJet will enhance its existing transatlantic connectivity, beginning its service between Halifax and Edinburgh and Dublin one month earlier than 2024, while increasing St. John’s previous service to London (Gatwick) from three-times weekly to four-times weekly.

    Growing its global hub’s transpacific service, WestJet will maintain its daily service to Tokyo this summer, while increasing Calgary’s capacity serving Incheon.

  • Revolutionizing shipping: drone technology soars to new heights at YEG

    Edmonton International Airport launches phase two of commercial drone project

    EDMONTON, AB, Sept. 17, 2024 /CNW/ – The Canary drone celebrated its new route from Edmonton International Airport to Montana First Nation’s Akamihk Medical Clinic in the City of Leduc today. Thanks to an innovative partnership with Drone Delivery Canada (DDC) (with the assistance of their sales agent, Air Canada), Apple Express, Braden Burry Expediting (bbe), Montana First Nation, the City of Leduc and Leduc County, YEG’s newest commercial drone will be able to transport first- and final-mile time-sensitive products more effectively.

    In December 2021, YEG became Canada’s first airport to integrate drone logistics into its operations, and in May 2022 began regularly scheduled commercial drone delivery operations in controlled airspace. Since then, DDC’s drone has serviced more than 3,000 commercial drone flights over a distance of more than 8,400 km from YEG to a DroneSpot™ in Leduc County. This new phase will expand that route to the City of Leduc, growing the drone flight path, increasing innovative and sustainable first- and final-mile delivery of high-value, time-critical products, and becoming the first drone program in Canada to safely intersect with the runway glide path.

    The Canary will fly 10.15 km from YEG to the Akamihk Medical Clinic along rail lines. Housed in Canadian North’s new 30,000-square-foot training facility in Edmonton, our latest-generation 737NG FFS ensures reliable access for pilots to invaluable training sessions.
