Multiplatform campaign features new selection of authentic stories as told by real passengers, partners and employees of Toronto’s downtown airport
TORONTO, July 2, 2024 /CNW/ – PortsToronto, owner and operator of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, today launched the latest edition of It’s My Airport, an award-winning multiplatform campaign featuring genuine, candid experiences shared by real passengers and employees of Toronto’s downtown airport. This campaign spotlights the benefits of the airport as a convenient travel hub and important piece of infrastructure for the City of Toronto.
With the tagline It’s My Airport, the campaign depicts actual passengers and employees recounting their travel experiences and providing the reasons why they choose to fly to/from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport or work at the airport. Participants were not paid and were not scripted.
Themes emerging from candid interviews with the passengers and staff included the airport’s proximity to downtown, the ability to walk or bike to the airport, friendly customer service, the airport’s sustainability practices, economic impact, community investment, career opportunities and how the airport provides a vital link to northern and remote communities providing emergency resources and support.
An earlier version of the campaign launched in the fall of 2023, and it was recognized with a Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) Toronto Achieving Communications Excellence (ACE) Award for Marketing Communications Campaign of the Year. The campaign creative included a QR code for people to connect and submit their own stories about why they choose Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. It was these submissions that formed the basis of the current campaign.
The campaign will run for 7 weeks, with a provision to extend on certain platforms, and includes social media, print, out-of-home (OOH), and online. The digital OOH screens in the airport will also be incorporated.

Toronto (May 23, 2024) – PortsToronto today released new public opinion research that highlights Torontonians’ overwhelmingly positive opinions of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. According to the 2024 survey, conducted among more than 2,000 Toronto residents aged 18 years and older with an oversample of those living along Toronto’s Waterfront, 78% of respondents characterize their opinion of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport as favourable. Further, satisfaction by those who use the airport has reached an all-time high of 98%.
The survey, conducted by Viewpoints Research, included weighting to ensure responses reflect the actual distribution of the population by age, gender, and region using Statistics Canada Census 2021 data. Results are consistent with past surveys commissioned by PortsToronto that have been undertaken every two years, with the last survey taking place in 2022. Key findings of the 2024 survey include:
77% of respondents agree that Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is a valuable asset for Toronto and is an important gateway that supports business and tourism;
78% of respondents agree that it makes sense for Toronto to have an airport downtown;
72% of respondents agree that Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is a good use of land;
85% of respondents agree that Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport’s environmental sustainability initiatives are important;
Nearly 80% of respondents support the addition of new destinations from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport across Canada and the United States; and,
68% of passengers travel through the airport for leisure; 24% for business; and 6% combine their business and leisure travel.
Only 2% of those surveyed had a negative opinion of the airport, citing reasons such as lack of direct public transit options, fewer destinations serviced than other airports, and noise.
Looking to the future, 83% of respondents agree that the airport’s governing agreement should be updated so that Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport can continue to provide the connectivity upon which Torontonians depend. Full survey results are available here.

Methodology
Viewpoints Research conducted this online survey from March 15 to 28, 2024, among a random sample of 2,041 Toronto residents aged 18 years and older with an oversample of residents living along an area called the Waterfront. The Waterfront includes water’s edge communities spanning from Etobicoke to Scarborough.
The margin of error of this sample (n= 2,041) is +/- 2.17%. The margin of error is wider among subsets of some questions and crosstabulation breakouts. Data was weighted by region, gender and age using the 2021 Census to ensure that the sample is representative of Toronto’s population. Results are expressed as percentages unless otherwise noted, and response rates include the full sample unless otherwise noted. Results may not add to 100% due to rounding.

TORONTO, May 21, 2024 /CNW/ – On Saturday, May 25 Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport will once again open its doors as part of Doors Open Toronto 2024. Throughout the day, thousands of people are expected to visit Billy Bishop Airport as part of the annual city-wide event.
This year’s theme – Hidden Histories– is about telling the story of Toronto through its many pasts and voices. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year, and this theme could not be better suited for the occasion. Since opening in 1939, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport has served as an important commercial aviation centre connecting Toronto to the world; a training ground for both the Royal Canadian and Royal Norwegian Air Forces during World War II; a hub for General Aviation and life-saving emergency Medevac services; and as a key driver of Toronto’s economy. With 85 years of flight and history, what better location to learn and explore about the city’s hidden histories?
As part of Doors Open 2024, visitors will have a unique opportunity to explore the airport’s buildings and facilities, go behind-the-scenes of airport operations and learn more about its long and storied history operating on Toronto’s Waterfront.

TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Porter Airlines is scheduled to offer travellers its most substantial summer schedule to date, featuring up to 176 daily flights to 27 destinations across North America taking off from Toronto. These flights will offer more passengers an elevated economy experience to more destinations than ever before.
By August, Porter will be the third-largest carrier flying from Toronto Pearson International Airport, with up to 74 daily flights to 16 destinations across Canada and the United States. Every flight from Toronto-Pearson is flown by the brand new, 132-seat Embraer E195-E2.
Routes from Toronto-Pearson feature destinations in the U.S. such as Florida, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco, plus Canadian cities such as Halifax, Québec City, St. John’s, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Victoria, Winnipeg and Saskatoon.
Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport remains a convenient gateway from downtown Toronto to Porter’s extensive Eastern Canada network and the Northeastern U.S., with up to 102 daily flights to 15 destinations.
Flights from Billy Bishop are operated by the 78-seat De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft. Porter exclusively provides non-stop service to popular destinations from Billy Bishop that include New York-Newark, Chicago-Midway, Boston, Halifax, Washington D.C.-Dulles and Thunder Bay.

TORONTO, April 25, 2024 /CNW/ – Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Military Institute (RCMI) and RCAF Foundation (RCAF), unveiled a new, permanent exhibit in the airport’s mainland pavilion in commemoration of the RCAF centennial and 85th anniversary of the airport.

The exhibit features an original First World War-era Curtiss JN-4 Canuck biplane propeller and a collection of nine original pilot’s wings badges, representing the evolution of badges worn by Canadian aviators from 1912-present and including the rare Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) wings of the First World War.
The “Canuck”, manufactured by Canadian Aeroplanes Ltd. of Toronto was the Canadian variant of the Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny”, an American/British design. The Canuck was widely used in training by Canadian pilots during the First World War.
Part of the collection of the RCMI museum, these artifacts are now on permanent display at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, next to the airport’s cast bronze statues of First World War flying aces and Victoria Cross recipients William Barker and William Avery “Billy” Bishop – the airport’s namesake.
Established in 1939, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport has operated on the Toronto waterfront for 85 years and has strong ties to Canadian military and aviation history. In its early years, from 1939 to 1943, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport served as a training ground for both the Royal Canadian and Royal Norwegian Air Forces, with neighbouring Little Norway Park named in honour of the Norwegian community that settled around the airport in 1940.

Conceived in the 1930s as the main airport for Toronto, the construction of what is now Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport was completed in 1939 by the Toronto Harbour Commission (THC), a predecessor organization of PortsToronto. At the same time, the THC built Malton Airport (now Toronto Pearson International Airport) as a secondary, alternate airport to be used in the event of weather.

On February 4, 1939, H.F. McLean of Montreal landed a Stinson SR-9F Reliant aircraft at Toronto’s new airport, marking the beginning of 85 years of flight at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.
That same year, on September 8, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport welcomed its first commercial passenger flight, as a charter flight carrying famed trumpet player and conductor Tommy Dorsey and his swing-band arrived in Toronto for a two-day engagement at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE).
These milestone anniversaries will bookend a celebration at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, commemorating the airport’s past, present and future.

Project T-Dot depicts candid images of Toronto’s most renowned Hip-Hop figures, as well as many others who are lesser-known but nonetheless influential in Toronto’s Hip-Hop scene, allowing travellers the opportunity to engage with the cultural richness of the city as they pass through Billy Bishop Airport.
Project T-Dot, which initially premiered at Toronto City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square in 2022, presents a definitive visual story that sheds new light on the city’s Hip-Hop scene and features instantly recognizable subjects such as Drake, The Weeknd, Director X, Kardinal Offishall, Jessie Reyez, Jully Black, Master T, Maestro Fresh Wes, and organizations like The Remix Project, Honey Jam, Manifesto Community Projects, October’s Very Own, and MuchMusic, among many others. Reflecting the diversity of the Hip-Hop subculture, the exhibit features members of the 2SLGBTQ+, Black, and Indigenous communities, women, youth from equity-deserving neighbourhoods, recent immigrants, and other marginalized groups. Passengers travelling through Billy Bishop Airport will be greeted with 60 large-scale photographic panels in the terminal’s atrium alongside an interactive touchscreen where they can learn more about Toronto’s Hip-Hop culture, community, and history by exploring engaging supplementary information.

Since acquiring the airport terminal, Nieuport has invested $60 million in upgrades, recently opening the Aspire Business Lounge for Canadian travellers. Nieuport is further investing in the development of the US Customs pre-clearance facility, to be opened in 2025.
