  • Star Alliance Expands Connection Service to Toronto Pearson Airport

Proactive Help for Customers with Tight Connecting Flights Marketing Campaign Launched

TORONTO, July 23, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ – The Star Alliance Connection Service is now available at Toronto Pearson Airport. This assists passengers with tight connections between two Star Alliance member airline flights. Dedicated Connection Service staff use special software to monitor the transfer window for customers with onward flights. Cases where passengers and checked bags appear in danger of missing a connection are automatically highlighted. The Connection Service agent can thereby already consider the various options available to ensure that the customer reaches the onward flight, or if necessary book alternative options, before the inbound flight even lands.

“With Connection Service now available in Toronto, we will ensure that more passengers with tight connections can make their onward flight, thereby improving the travel experience at one of our main hubs in North America. We are presently working on the expansion of this service to more key hubs in our network”, said Christian Draeger, Star Alliance Vice President Customer Experience.

Toronto is the 13th biggest Star Alliance transfer hub world-wide, with more than 400,000 passengers connecting from one Star Alliance carrier to another each year.

Together they offer more than 6,000 flights per week connecting Toronto to 159 destinations in 59 countries.

The Toronto route, as well as New York and Washington, D.C. routes, will operate with Primera’s new fleet of Airbus A321neo aircraft.

The low-cost airline says it has now received its full fleet of A321neo planes.

Last month Primera Air suspended its summer flights between both Toronto and New York and Birmingham, England, blaming “severe delays” with the delivery of its A321neo fleet.

The winter 2018/19 schedule has three flights per week to Toronto, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, as well as four flights per week for the anticipated Washington D.C. route starting in August and daily service out of New York. Primera’s seasonal London Stansted – Boston route will make its return to the schedule in early 2019.

“The demand we’ve seen so far shows there is a lot of interest in the catchment area of London Stansted, including Greater London, Essex and surrounding cities such as Cambridge and Peterborough,” says Primera Air Chief Commercial Officer Anastasija Visnakova. “There is clearly a huge amount of appetite for low-fare transatlantic flights and we’ve seen more than 70,000 passengers booking flights on our new transatlantic routes.”

The LCC broke into the Canadian market in spring 2018 with flights from Toronto to England as well as Paris. The winter route to London Stansted is scheduled to run through March 30, 2019.

  • Passengers with bags slowed WestJet 737 evacuation: TSB

THE CANADIAN PRESS – TORONTO – The Transportation Safety Board says the evacuation of a WestJet plane after a collision with another aircraft at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport was hampered when some passengers tried to take carry-on luggage with them.

The board says the WestJet flight carrying 169 passengers and six crew members from Cancun, Mexico, was waiting for a gate when it was hit by a Sunwing jet being towed to another location at the airport on Jan. 5.

When a large ball of fire erupted near the area where the aircraft made contact, the WestJet crew immediately began an evacuation and the ground crew pulled the Sunwing aircraft back towards the gate.

The TSB says when the Sunwing plane was pulled away, the fire on the wing of the WestJet aircraft self-extinguished, while the fire on the tail of the Sunwing aircraft continued but decreased in intensity.

It says that three seconds after the fire erupted, and before any commands from the crew, some WestJet passengers had opened an emergency exit and escaped onto the wing and other passengers followed.

The TSB said in a report released Wednesday that it’s recommending the Department of Transport require that passenger safety briefings include clear direction to leave all carry-on baggage behind during an evacuation.

During the evacuation, flight attendants issued instructions, with and without the assistance of a handheld megaphone, telling the passengers to leave all their carry-on baggage behind, the TSB said.

“Despite these instructions, numerous passengers brought carry-on baggage with them, which slowed down the evacuation process,” the report said.

The TSB says a flight attendant suffered a minor hand injury, but no one else was injured in the evacuation of the WestJet plane.

The technician on the Sunwing aircraft had minor injuries after leaving through a cockpit window and going down an emergency rope.

The TSB said the evacuation took approximately two minutes and 23 seconds from the time the captain made the evacuation call.
