The addition of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, reflects our continued ambition to offer our customers and Aeroplan members an exceptional, diversified array of unique Air Canada destinations. Enabled by the next-generation capabilities of our incoming A321XLR aircraft, travellers on the only non-stop service from North America now have convenient options to reach the island renowned for its stunning volcanic scenery, a rich array of bucket-list activities and year-round warm weather,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, and President of Cargo at Air Canada.

According to Melwani, “The island has spent several years working to improve its positioning in these markets, whose interest in Tenerife continues to grow, although there is still a long way to go. This direct flight makes it possible for Tenerife to reinforce our position as a gateway to Europe for North American travelers, while raising the profile of our cultural, culinary and leisure offering in priority source markets on the current roadmap. Montreal has been a central part of Porter’s strategy since it began flying to Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) when the airline was founded in 2006. MET’s opening allows for a rapid 91% expansion of Porter’s peak summer capacity in the region, including six new non-stop destinations. There are as many as 244 weekly departures from the city–138 from MET and 106 from YUL.
New flights at MET complement Porter’s continuing commitment to Montreal-Trudeau. By serving both airports, Porter is offering passengers more choice, flexibility, and convenience in selecting their flights and destinations.
In the last three years, Porter has introduced 52 E195-E2s into its fleet. This enabled rapid growth throughout North America, including transcontinental flights in Canada and the U.S., plus service to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. The airline continues expanding its network, which currently includes 112 routes across 49 year-round and seasonal destinations.
Its arrival at MET is part of this plan to have an even stronger presence across Canada. A partnership with regional airline Pascan, based at MET, also provides improved connectivity throughout Quebec’s regions and the Maritimes. Passengers are able to purchase a single ticket that includes flights on both airlines, with seamless baggage connections.
Porter has earned recognition as a top airline within North America. It is celebrated for a refined and caring service culture, complementary premium snacks, a choice of beverages, including free beer and wine served in real glassware, plus free, fast WiFi on its E195-E2 aircraft. The airline’s generous service, combined with MET’s exceptional passenger experience, will elevate the art of travelling.
“The new MET terminal development represents an exceptional private investment in transportation infrastructure that Greater Montreal will benefit from for generations. Porter is bringing a wide range of flight options to the airport, along with a genuine commitment to the community. Our philosophy is to treat everyone with care and this is perfectly complemented by the overall travel experience passengers will enjoy at MET. We are eager to begin this journey with an unprecedented amount of new service.” – Michael Deluce, CEO, Porter Airlines
“MET is very proud to count on Porter Airlines as a leading strategic partner in enhancing connectivity for Greater Montreal across Canada. With Porter’s strong presence at MET, the opening of the new terminal is built on solid foundations and promises a reliable and forward-looking future for the greatest benefit of passengers.” – Yanic Roy, CEO, MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport
“As Porter prepares to begin operations at MET, passengers will quickly notice a different kind of airport experience. The terminal has been designed to make every step before boarding simpler, faster and more comfortable — from arrival at the Terminal to the gate. With its compact layout and a simple, streamlined passenger flow, travellers can move through the terminal with ease and spend more time relaxing before their flight. The Government of Manitoba is contributing $5 million to the project, announced by the Honourable Jamie Moses, Minister of Business, Mining, Trade and Job Creation, along with a $17 million investment from WAA.
The investment will prepare shovel-ready, direct-access runway lands at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (YWG), creating space for new and expanding businesses that rely on immediate runway access. Development of these lands will strengthen Manitoba’s role as a hub for trade, logistics and aviation, while diversifying trade, strengthening supply chains, and building long-term economic growth.
In January 2026, the Winnipeg Airports Authority, CentrePort Canada and Arctic Gateway Group announced a new trade alliance supported by PrairiesCan and the Province of Manitoba to strengthen Manitoba’s trade network, further diversify Canadian trade routes, and provide better access for businesses to global markets. Today’s announcement aligns with the partnership’s goal of developing a more integrated, resilient supply chain that moves goods and people more efficiently across air, land, and sea.

Quick facts
It is expected that the project will create $940 million in direct GDP impact during its construction phase and $270 million in recurring, annual direct GDP impact once complete. The project is also projected to support 1,300 direct jobs.
The $10 million federal investment was coordinated through the Prairie Project Table, a collaborative forum led by PrairiesCan bringing together federal departments to advance high-impact regional projects such as this that align with the Prairie Partnership Initiative.

OTTAWA, ON , Nov. 26, 2025 /CNW/ – The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has installed CT X-ray technology at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (YWG). This advanced screening system is now operational on line 4 at the Domestic/International checkpoint. This marks the first deployment of CT technology at YWG.
Passengers travelling through screening lines equipped with CT X-ray are no longer required to remove bags with permitted liquids, aerosols and gels (100 ml or less), medical devices, or large electronics–including laptops–from their carry-on bags.
The installation of this technology at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport is part of CATSA’s national strategy to upgrade screening systems across Canadian airports over a multi-year period. To help travellers stay informed, CATSA offers an interactive CT X-ray map on its website. The map shows which airports and checkpoints across Canada are equipped with this state-of-the-art technology, making it easier for passengers to know what to expect.
CATSA looks forward to continuing its collaboration with Winnipeg Richardson International Airport throughout the deployment of CT technology on all screening lines. We are committed to enhancing the passenger experience while maintaining the highest standards of security for travellers at Canada’s designated airports.

“CATSA’s introduction of CT X-ray technology at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport represents an important step forward in enhancing the travel experience for our passengers. This innovation not only improves efficiency at security checkpoints but also reflects our commitment to working with partners like CATSA to bring world-class solutions to YWG. We’re proud to be part of this national initiative that prioritizes both security and convenience for travellers.”
— Nick Hays, President and CEO, Winnipeg Richardson International Airport
Established on April 1, 2002, CATSA is a Crown corporation fully funded by parliamentary appropriations and is accountable to Parliament through the Minister of Transport Canada.
A deployment of this magnitude underscores CATSA’s commitment to driving innovation and elevating passengers’ experience in aviation security nationwide.
CATSA is dedicated to working with its screening contractors and air travel partners to deliver service excellence through effective and efficient security screening.
CT is state-of-the-art technology that utilizes advanced three-dimensional rotatable images enhancing screening officers’ ability to detect explosives and other threat items. For air travellers, it means that permitted liquids, aerosols and gels (100 mL or less each), medical devices and large electronics can remain in their carry-on baggage when being screened.
