  • Air North, Yukon’s Airline Reintroduces Seasonal Service Between Vancouver and Yellowknife

Whitehorse, Yukon — August 7, 2025 – Air North, Yukon’s Airline, is pleased to announce the return of its seasonal non-stop service between Vancouver and Yellowknife, beginning Monday, November 24, 2025, which will depart twice weekly until March 27, 2026. This reinstated route enhances direct air travel between British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. Excitingly, it also enables near year-round air service between Whitehorse and Yellowknife: via Vancouver in the winter and through Air North’s eastern gateway in Ontario during the summer. The service will play a key role in enhancing northern transportation links and fostering economic and cultural connections across the region.

“This route aligns with our mission to deliver Canada’s best regional air network,” said Benjamin Ryan, Chief Commercial Officer at Air North. “As a Yukon-owned and operated airline, we are deeply committed to supporting the prosperity of Canada’s Arctic. We see this route as a meaningful step toward strengthening connections between the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. Our track record of delivering safe, reliable, and affordable air access in the North continues to contribute to community well-being and long-term economic development.”

“We are pleased that Air North – which has been serving northern communities out of YVR for over 20 years – is reintroducing service to Yellowknife,” said Mike McNaney, Vice President and Chief External Affairs Officer at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). “Those travelling from British Columbia now have more choice and opportunity to experience all that a Northwest Territories winter has to offer, while flights from Yellowknife are timed for seamless onwards connections through YVR.”

The service reflects Air North’s northern-first strategy, marking a significant milestone in connecting the Yukon and Northwest Territories by prioritizing community needs, fostering economic integration, and strengthening long-term regional resilience. It enhances tourism and travel trade by increasing two-way visitor flows between Yellowknife and Vancouver, with seamless connections for international travellers eager to experience Aurora season. It also supports cargo transport, business travel, scientific collaboration, and ongoing investment in northern innovation and Indigenous partnerships.

“NWT Tourism is very excited to welcome back Air North’s seasonal non‑stop service between Vancouver and Yellowknife. The reinstated route highlights Air North’s continued commitment to supporting the Northwest Territories and our businesses,” says Donna Lee Demarcke, Chief Executive Officer of Northwest Territories Tourism. “Whether travelling to visit family and friends, for business, or to experience the magic of the midnight sun or the Northern Lights, this route fosters meaningful opportunities for tourism, business, and cultural connection. We thank Air North for their continued support as we work together to showcase the Spectacular NWT to the world.”

The inaugural flight, operated by Air North’s Boeing 737 aircraft, departs Vancouver International Airport (YVR) at 1:25 p.m. PT on Monday, November 24, and arrives at Yellowknife Airport (YZF) at 4:55 p.m. MT. Flights are available for purchase starting today, with one-way fares from just $139 CAD, including complimentary meals, checked and carry-on baggage, and Air North’s famous warm chocolate chip cookie and friendly service.

About Air North: Air North, Yukon’s Airline was founded in 1977 and is 49% owned by the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation. • First Person: Air Canada Captain Chad Blewett recounts operating special flight to help evacuate his hometown of Yellowknife

    23 August 2023

Chad Blewett is a Captain on the Boeing 737 Max for Air Canada, and one of the airline’s first Inuit Captains.

I had seen the news of the wildfires near Yellowknife and was receiving updates from my family members who were there.

With a mandatory evacuation being ordered as the fires approached the city, I knew Air Canada would be helping with those efforts. While normally we do not fly the Boeing 737 Max 8 to Yellowknife, our teams found a way to make it happen.

When I saw flight to Yellowknife flight show up on the schedule, I immediately called crew scheduling and asked them to switch me from my assigned flight to Honolulu so that I could operate into Yellowknife instead.

Not only is Yellowknife where I am from, but the airport there is where I grew up as a pilot, and I have flown thousands of hours into Yellowknife, including on older model 737s.

So, when the chief pilot called me, and said that we had special authorization to do the first Air Canada 737 Max flight into Yellowknife, I knew I had to be on it, and that it would be no problem flying into, or out of.

Flying into Yellowknife from Vancouver, I was excited to be back, but a little anxious as well, just with the whole situation happening on the ground. We had extra support with us on the flight, including a maintenance engineer, as well as four baggage handlers to expedite the loading in Yellowknife.

As I was flying in, I was thinking about my family because my dad, my brother are still up there, my uncles and my cousins were visiting, and I was just thinking about them. I saw family inside the terminal, and they seemed calm despite everything that was going on. They said they would be leaving town the next morning.

When I made my announcement to the passengers, one of them recognized my name and let the flight attendants know. So once we were at cruise altitude, I went back and saw that it was an old colleague of mine from the local airline. I asked how she was doing and she mentioned that she was ok, but that her husband was staying behind to help with the evacuation.

Flying directly over the fire on departure, and seeing how close it was to town, was very concerning. It is pretty tough to see, you think it’s never going to happen to you or your family. But I knew that the first responders on the ground would do their best to protect the city, my hometown.

I am proud of my airline’s efforts to help, as these special flights were put in within 24 hours of the evacuation order. It was an unforgettable experience, doing my small part to get friends, family, and everyone out safely during this difficult time.

Status of operations – as of Thursday, August 17 at 12:00 p.m. MT

In response to the mandatory evacuation order issued by The Government of The Northwest Territories, a travel advisory has been posted on WestJet.com and flexible change/cancel guidelines have been announced for all guests travelling to Yellowknife between August 15 and 22, 2023. To ensure guests evacuating are able to do so affordably, WestJet has adjusted fare classes to avoid price escalation.

To aid evacuation efforts, WestJet has added an extra recovery flight scheduled for August 17, 2023, between Yellowknife and Calgary:

    • WS4160 YYC – YZF
    • WS4161 YZF – YYC

Additionally, WestJet has added larger aircraft to operate previously scheduled flights between Calgary and Yellowknife on WestJet flight WS221 and WS222.

To ensure as many guests as possible can bring their pets onboard all flights departing Yellowknife today, WestJet has increased the pets in cabin limit.

Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our guests and crews, we have proactively cancelled six flights at this time on Friday August 18, 2023, and Saturday, August 19, 2023. We are working to notify all impacted guests and encourage them to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.

    Impacted flights:

    • WS221 YYC-YZF
    • WS222 YZF-YYC
    • WS221 YYC-YZF
    • WS222 YZF-YYC
    • WS3161 YYC-YZF
    • WS3194 YZF-YYC

As the situation evolves, we are working diligently to provide increased capacity from Yellowknife and will share further updates as they become available.

We continue to monitor the situation closely and will make operational changes in the name of safety as necessary. All guests currently in the region are advised to follow all response instructions provided by local authorities.

  • Air Canada’s Statement on Yellowknife

MONTREAL, August 17, 2023 – We are closely monitoring the devastating events in the NWT, and increasing our Yellowknife flights to help people get to a safe region. This is a complex and evolving situation, and we remain in contact with NWT government officials to provide support. We have deep roots in Yellowknife as our regional airline partner Jazz has employees who together with their families live in this community. They are working hard to assist people during this difficult time.

For Thursday, August 17, we added two extra flights, doubling the normal frequencies to four. We have also substituted a larger 169-seat Boeing 737 for one of those flights to provide extra seat availability. For Friday, August 18, Air Canada has also added an extra B737 flight in addition to the usual two flights, and we will continue evaluating opportunities for adjustments.

At this time, there will be no flights to or from Yellowknife on Saturday, August 19 due to the government evacuation order. We plan to operate as the situation permits.

With respect to pricing, there have been postings in social media about fares being elevated. This is not correct as we proactively at the earliest possible time put in place a cap to limit fares for Air Canada’s direct flights out of Yellowknife.

The examples on social media are aggregated fares by websites which are not in line with what we are offering on our non-stop flights from Yellowknife. For example, some involve several stops and other carriers, with some trips lasting as much as 21 hours, when a normal non-stop Yellowknife-Calgary flight is two hours.  We endeavour to get these aggregated fares corrected where possible – however, customers should always ensure they are purchasing the non-stop fares directly from the aircanada.com website or from a travel agent to avoid the multi-leg routings.

We also monitor the pricing on aircanada.com to ensure that the capped fares continue to display as intended. Sometimes it requires taking steps to correct fares manually when they may not display as they should due to certain technical factors. Rest assured, we get these corrected as soon as possible, and we refund passengers who inadvertently purchase a fare before it gets corrected by our team.

At this point, flights for the next few days are fairly full, and we continue monitoring the situation closely and will adjust our schedule as we can. We have also put in place a goodwill policy for customers to change their flights booked for travel up to August 30, or to obtain a full refund.

Thank you for your patience as our people are working hard to get you to a safe destination. We will be ready to fly you back home as soon as it is safe to do so.
