original Porter Airlines to be launch carrier at new Montreal Metropolitan Airport

LONGUEUIL, Quebec–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Porter Airlines is transforming air travel in Montreal by bringing its elevated passenger experience to the revitalized Montreal Metropolitan Airport (MET). Service begins on June 15, with 12 routes being introduced across Canada.

Passengers flying from MET will step into a unique, modern terminal featuring an open concept departure lounge with comfortable seating throughout. YHU Infrastructure Partners developed and operates the new terminal, focusing on creating a more enjoyable airport experience that puts passengers at ease. Its compact and efficient design saves travellers substantial time when departing or arriving.

Located in Longueuil on Montreal’s South Shore, the airport’s location offers a more convenient air travel option for greater than 50% of the region’s population and provides easy access to downtown and Montreal’s central neighbourhoods. MET, formerly called Saint-Hubert Airport, will be a significant boost for the local economy, including the travel and tourism sectors.

Porter’s inaugural MET flight schedule puts Montreal at the centre of a cross-country network. Twelve coast-to-coast routes are starting within a week:

Montreal has been a central part of Porter’s strategy since it began flying to Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) when the airline was founded in 2006. MET’s opening allows for a rapid 91% expansion of Porter’s peak summer capacity in the region, including six new non-stop destinations. There are as many as 244 weekly departures from the city–138 from MET and 106 from YUL.

New flights at MET complement Porter’s continuing commitment to Montreal-Trudeau. By serving both airports, Porter is offering passengers more choice, flexibility, and convenience in selecting their flights and destinations.

In the last three years, Porter has introduced 52 E195-E2s into its fleet. This enabled rapid growth throughout North America, including transcontinental flights in Canada and the U.S., plus service to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. The airline continues expanding its network, which currently includes 112 routes across 49 year-round and seasonal destinations.

Its arrival at MET is part of this plan to have an even stronger presence across Canada. A partnership with regional airline Pascan, based at MET, also provides improved connectivity throughout Quebec’s regions and the Maritimes. Passengers are able to purchase a single ticket that includes flights on both airlines, with seamless baggage connections.

Porter has earned recognition as a top airline within North America. It is celebrated for a refined and caring service culture, complementary premium snacks, a choice of beverages, including free beer and wine served in real glassware, plus free, fast WiFi on its E195-E2 aircraft. The airline’s generous service, combined with MET’s exceptional passenger experience, will elevate the art of travelling.

“The new MET terminal development represents an exceptional private investment in transportation infrastructure that Greater Montreal will benefit from for generations. Porter is bringing a wide range of flight options to the airport, along with a genuine commitment to the community. Our philosophy is to treat everyone with care and this is perfectly complemented by the overall travel experience passengers will enjoy at MET. We are eager to begin this journey with an unprecedented amount of new service.”
    – Michael Deluce, CEO, Porter Airlines

“MET is very proud to count on Porter Airlines as a leading strategic partner in enhancing connectivity for Greater Montreal across Canada. With Porter’s strong presence at MET, the opening of the new terminal is built on solid foundations and promises a reliable and forward-looking future for the greatest benefit of passengers.”
    – Yanic Roy, CEO, MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport

“As Porter prepares to begin operations at MET, passengers will quickly notice a different kind of airport experience. The terminal has been designed to make every step before boarding simpler, faster and more comfortable — from arrival at the Terminal to the gate. With its compact layout and a simple, streamlined passenger flow, travellers can move through the terminal with ease and spend more time relaxing before their flight. Together with Porter’s elevated onboard service, this creates a seamless and refreshing travel experience.”

  • Porter Airlines welcomes opening of U.S. Preclearance at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport

New facility streamlines travel experience for passengers

TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Porter Airlines is celebrating a significant enhancement for Toronto travellers with the opening of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) Preclearance at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ), marking a new era of convenience for passengers.

As the airport’s largest airline and a longtime advocate for Preclearance, Porter welcomes this streamlined travel experience for the hundreds of thousands of passengers who fly on its U.S. routes each year. The airline has been the driving force behind U.S. traffic at the airport, accounting for all cross-border service since it started operating these routes nearly two decades ago. This represents over 13 million passengers to date.

“Porter has strongly supported Preclearance at Billy Bishop for over 15 years, recognizing the tremendous value it brings to travellers. This is an important development for our passengers and the airport,” said Michael Deluce, CEO, Porter Airlines. “Since launching U.S. flights from YTZ in 2008, Porter has been committed to providing elevated economy service between Toronto and key American cities. Preclearance represents the next chapter in that journey.”

Porter operates up to 16 daily flights to five U.S. destinations from YTZ to established markets in Boston, Chicago, New York/Newark and Washington, D.C. New service to Nashville (BNA) begins on May 11, and existing Chicago service transitions to O’Hare (ORD) from Midway (MDW), as of Sept. 1.

With Preclearance becoming operational, Porter passengers will clear customs and immigration in Toronto before departure, arriving at U.S. airports as domestic passengers. This eliminates additional time for customs processing upon arrival and facilitates faster connections for those with continuing itineraries.

“Billy Bishop has consistently facilitated U.S. travel each year for more passengers than other airports that already have Preclearance. We thank the Canadian and U.S. governments for enabling this important investment, as well as Toronto Port Authority and Nieuport Aviation for ensuring that all requirements were in place for the facility to open,” added Deluce.

To ensure a seamless experience through the new facility, passengers travelling to the U.S. are advised to arrive at Billy Bishop three hours before departure, subject to airport operating hours. Check-in and baggage drop-off counters now close 60 minutes prior to scheduled departure times for U.S. flights, allowing for necessary processing through screening before boarding.

  • PortsToronto Returns to its Roots as the Toronto Port Authority

Rebrand marks 115 years of city building and reinforces role of its business units, including Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, as a critical economic engine and urban connector

After operating as PortsToronto for a decade, the organization that owns and operates Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and is responsible for stewardship of Toronto’s harbour is returning to its roots and will once again be known as the Toronto Port Authority.

January 15, 2026 (Toronto) – After operating as PortsToronto for a decade, the organization that owns and operates Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and is responsible for stewardship of Toronto’s harbour is returning to its roots and will once again be known as the Toronto Port Authority. This rebrand marks a return to its legal name and historic federal identity and signifies a renewed commitment to its legacy as a city builder, economic catalyst for the region and country, and owner and operator of Toronto’s national, multi-modal transportation gateways.

This rebrand comes at a pivotal moment. The Toronto region is growing rapidly and Canada is placing new urgency on resilient supply chains, modernized infrastructure and sustainable urban mobility. At the heart of this shift is Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, one of the country’s most important urban airports and major contributor to the region’s economic dynamism, the Port of Toronto and the Cruise Ship Terminal, all of which are strategically positioned to support growth and strengthen Canada’s interconnected infrastructure network.

“Reintroducing the Toronto Port Authority name is more than a rebrand –- it’s a powerful affirmation of our foundational purpose and our future vision,” said RJ Steenstra, President and CEO, Toronto Port Authority. “We honour our 115-year legacy as a city builder and steward of Toronto’s harbour, shaping the waterfront and enabling the city’s evolution. As the owner and operator of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport which provides critical business connectivity and a significant economic engine, as well as the Port of Toronto which plays a vital role in ensuring resilient supply chains through imports of essential materials, the Toronto Port Authority plays a key role in economic growth for the future. This renewed identity reflects our commitment to modernization, sustainability, and public value for Toronto, Ontario, and Canada.”

    Strengthening a growing regional economy

The Toronto Port Authority’s transportation gateways deliver substantial benefits to the region and the country:

    • Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport generates approximately $2 billion in annual economic output and supports more than 4,500 jobs, making it a key driver for Toronto’s economy.
    • Billy Bishop is set to launch U.S. CBP Preclearance in early 2026, facilitating bilateral trade, with additional destinations expected in 2026.
    • The Port of Toronto generates more than $460 million in economic activity for Ontario, importing critical materials like steel, cement, sugar, and road salt, securing resilient supply chains for the region.
    • Marine shipping through the Port removes more than 51,000 truckloads annually from GTA roads, significantly reducing congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.
    • The Port of Toronto Cruise Ship Terminal welcomes nearly 20,000 visitors annually and contributes to a regional $280-million Great Lakes tourism economy, directly supporting Toronto’s hospitality, retail and cultural sectors.
    • Located 10 minutes from downtown, The Outer Harbour Marina is one of Canada’s largest freshwater marinas and holds a Diamond designation in the Boating Ontario Clean Marine Eco-Rating Program, one of the highest ranking attainable for marinas that follow environmental best practices.

Together, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and the Port of Toronto position Toronto as a truly multi-modal economic gateway. The Toronto Port Authority links Canada’s largest city to major North American business centers while delivering diversified, resilient supply lines from Europe, Asia, Central and South America and the South Pacific. This integrated system supports business mobility, ensures the steady flow of essential goods and reinforces the economic foundation of Canada’s fastest-growing urban region.

The Toronto Port Authority’s integrated assets create a waterfront mobility network that moves people, goods, and visitors in ways few global cities can match. As the only port authority in Canada to own and operate an airport, Toronto Port Authority is uniquely positioned to pilot new approaches to harbour mobility and connectivity—mirroring innovations seen in leading waterfront cities around the world. This multi-modal approach not only drives economic growth and competitiveness but also advances sustainable, integrated urban transportation across the region.

Operating under a federal mandate, the Toronto Port Authority is financially self-sustaining, reinvesting revenues into critical infrastructure, harbour management initiatives, and community programs. This model ensures independent oversight, financial accountability, and decision-making aligned with the public interest.

The rebrand underscores the Toronto Port Authority enduring commitment to long-term planning, responsible stewardship, and balancing commercial activity with environmental protection and community access, preparing Toronto’s transportation infrastructure for the next century.

MONTRÉAL, Oct. 23, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Air Canada today unveiled a major expansion at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport with new transborder routes to four major U.S. cities and increased daily flights to Montréal and Ottawa. The new services, with frequencies favourable to business travel, further heighten the customer experience at Billy Bishop airport, including the introduction this month of fast, free onboard Wi-Fi, complimentary onboard premium snacks, beer and wine, and exclusive access to the Aspire Air Canada Café for eligible domestic customers.

    Increased service to Montréal, Ottawa

In January 2026, Air Canada will add new daily flights from Toronto Island in the popular and heavily travelled Eastern Triangle of Canada. This includes an additional flight to Montréal, bringing the service to nine return flights daily. Between the island and Ottawa, the carrier is adding two frequencies to bring to six the number of total daily return trips to the nation’s capital from Billy Bishop.

Elevating the Billy Bishop Travel Experience

Beginning in October 2025, Air Canada was the first airline to offer fast, free Wi-Fi in-flight to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport travellers. The industry-leading service provides high-quality Internet to give customers gate-to-gate connectivity and non-stop access to productivity tools while travelling on Air Canada Express flights to and from the city airport on some of the most popular business travel routes in Canada and next year to the U.S. It is the first time Wi-Fi has been made available on a De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft type anywhere in the world. The introduction of fast, free Wi-Fi complements the other amenities Air Canada customers flying from Billy Bishop now enjoy, including frequent departures, complimentary in-flight premium snacks, beer and wine, and exclusive access for eligible domestic customers to the Aspire Air Canada Café.

    Regional Flying Reimagined

A full cabin redesign will soon be commenced on 25 De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft operated for Air Canada Express by Jazz. The program includes:

All seats will include a seatback multi-use device holder for tablets and phones, as well as a table tray. The installation of the new seating has an expected completion date for the program in mid-2026. Each aircraft will have 78 seats, and pitch will be unchanged.

    Cabin Interior Redesign

The cabins of these same 25 Dash 8-400s will be upgraded to a new standard reflective of Air Canada ’s mainline aircraft interiors. The design incorporates colours, textures and tones of those found in Canadian nature, reinforcing Air Canada’s pride in being the nation’s flag carrier.

  • BETA Technologies Lands All-Electric ALIA CX300in Toronto, Announces First Canadian Purchase ofElectric Charger

Toronto, ON (August 18th, 2025) – Canadian Advanced Air Mobility (CAAM), the federal industry association for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) in Canada, today
announced BETA Technologies, flew its ALIA CTOL (CX300) aircraft in a demonstration flight at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, in addition to Canada’s first
purchase of a BETA electric charger by Stolport.

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, located on Toronto Island just minutes from downtown, has long been a central hub for regional connectivity. The arrival of
BETA’s electric ALIA CTOL aircraft at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport positions the airport as a leader in Canada’s transition toward zero-emission aviation.

“Electric aircraft technology will contribute to the future of aviation and promises air travel that is cleaner, greener, and quieter, which aligns with our strategic goals at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. PortsToronto was delighted to host BETA Industries and witness innovation in action in today’s demonstration flight. The future of electric aviation is not about the distant future; it is about the here and now, and we need to provide the conditions and leadership to ensure the effective adoption of this sustainable technology. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is well positioned to be an early adopter of new technology, such as this electric aircraft, to enhance its service offering and make investments in modernizing our operations.” – RJ Steenstra, President & CEO, PortsToronto, owner and operator of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

Stolport also acquired a BETA Mini Cube charger for its operations at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. The portable unit delivers 60 kWh of power and is both
multimodal and interoperable, allowing it to charge electric aircraft as well as ground vehicles, marking BETA’s first charger sale in Canada.

“The purchase of the BETA Mini Cube charger by Stolport at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is not just a first for Toronto, it is a milestone for all of Canada,” said JR
Hammond, Executive Director of Canadian Advanced Air Mobility (CAAM). “This shows that advanced air mobility is moving beyond concept and demonstration into operational reality. Airports and FBOs across the country can look to this as an example of how to prepare for the future of aviation.”

BETA has brought 52 chargers online at site locations across the U.S. for public and private use by commercial, military, and medical entities. These sites, which have been installed in partnership with airports, FBOs, government agencies, and OEMs, set the foundation to bring electric aviation to both metropolitan areas as well as rural and hard-to-reach communities with limited access to air transportation. “Joining BETA’s global charging network is more than an operational upgrade – it is a commitment to being on the leading and greening edge of aviation in Canada. Stolport is proud to invest in smart infrastructure that enables the economic development of sustainable aviation.” – Nicolas Pappalardo, CEO, Stolport The partnership between BETA Technologies, PortsToronto, and Stolport demonstrates how collaboration between AAM innovators, airport authorities, and infrastructure partners can speed the adoption of sustainable aviation technologies. BETA’s electric ALIA CTOL aircraft offers practical performance for regional travel and cargo transport while producing net-zero emissions in flight.

“Between our engineering hub in Montreal and customers in Vancouver, Canada is an important international focus for us. We’re excited to have flown ALIA into the heart of Toronto and to be teaming up with Stolport to help electrify Billy Bishop as the region embraces this new form of mobility. We look forward to all of the opportunities we can unlock together for Toronto and beyond.” – Sheradin Fabrizius, Sales Director, BETA Technologies

BETA Technologies has steadily increased its presence in Canada over the past two years. The company opened an office in Montréal in 2023, focused on engineering and aircraft certification. In the same year, BETA’s electric ALIA aircraft became the first electric aircraft to land at Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. BETA also secured Canada’s first purchase of an eVTOL aircraft with Helijet International in October 2023. In September 2024, BETA joined CAAM’s National Board, further strengthening ties to the Canadian advance air mobility ecosystem.

Celebrating Toronto’s identity, Perspectives provides an opportunity for artists to represent what makes the city special to them, from its landmarks and neighbourhoods to its people and culture.

TORONTO, Jan. 28, 2025 /CNW/ – Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is proud to debut Perspectives, a public art program that showcases local talent and expresses unique visions of Toronto. The new program invites local artists to share their personal interpretations of the city, offering a platform for diverse perspectives that reflect the vibrancy, diversity and spirit of Toronto. The launch of the program will feature 20 works of art displayed in the airport’s pedestrian tunnel, creating an immersive experience for passengers, employees and community members that travel through the tunnel.

Perspectives at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. (CNW Group/Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport)

Perspectives has been designed to be ever evolving, providing a platform for local artists to explore and express their personal connections to the city, from its landmarks and neighbourhoods to its people and culture. Featuring a diverse range of works, Perspectives provides a dynamic, visually engaging experience for travellers, allowing them to connect with the city on a deeper level as they pass through one of its busiest transport hubs. The art will be regularly refreshed and changed to ensure a diversity of perspectives, and future iterations of the program have the potential of expanding to other areas of the airport, including the passenger terminal.

“Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is honoured to have served the City of Toronto for over 85 years. Throughout this time, it has grown alongside the city, providing vital services, fostering community, and offering convenient access and connectivity to the people and experiences that make Toronto such a unique and vibrant destination,” said RJ Steenstra, President and CEO, PortsToronto. “Beyond our commitment to enriching the city’s cultural landscape through public art installations, Perspectives is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the pedestrian tunnel. The art will be regularly refreshed with new works, showcasing the incredible talent of our local artists while also offering passengers a fresh perspective on the city.”

“Nieuport Aviation has supported public art installations in the passenger terminal of YTZ for many years and we give great credit to our partners at PortsToronto for enhancing the pedestrian tunnel through the exciting Perspectives program,” said Neil Pakey, President and CEO, Nieuport Aviation. “The launch of Perspectives will bring fresh viewpoints from new artists into the mix and enable our community and travellers alike to enjoy the airport as a permanent public arts venue.”

Part of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport’s broader commitment to supporting local artists, fostering cultural expression in the public sphere and offering both locals and visitors a meaningful glimpse into Toronto’s artistic community, Perspectives aims to create a lasing impact by highlighting the diversity of Toronto’s artistic voices.

“I am an Anishinaabe artist from Nipissing First Nation and I currently work out of Toronto. These designs are inspired from my Anishinaabe culture, teachings, language and ceremonies. These designs are layered in teachings. Each design has a minimum of 7 layers. Teachings are layered to highlight the laws of nature. This art form is designed to show the balance of nature and duality. The physical and spiritual worlds. The art is also designed to be a visual healing experience. The departures and arrivals designs are meant to be welcoming and farewelling with peace love and respect.  Aanin and Boozhoo are common greetings in Anishinaabemowin. Biindigen means welcome. Baamaapii translates to “I will see you later” and is a common farewell. There is no word for goodbye in Anishinaabemowin. Biskaabiiyaang is describing someone who has been on a long journey and is on their way home.  I felt these words in my language complimented everyone travelling through Billy Bishop Airport.”

    –       Que Rock, Artist

“All of my work is inspired by urban density, architecture, and Toronto’s waterfront spanning from the RC Harris Water Treatment plant in the east, to Bathurst and Queens Quay in the West. In my drawings I always try to capture the feelings and details of spaces in downtown Toronto. Growing up in the suburbs you don’t really see much density with buildings, stores or people. Downtown Toronto has a unique mixture of old and new architecture literally built side by side or on top of an old building. Billy Bishop Airport has given me this tremendous opportunity to showcase my drawings in a very large scale. I hope this brings in more viewers to my type of drawing & painting.”

    –       Mariana Hernandez, Artist

“As a photographer, I strive to capture the heart and soul of Toronto—the energy, the culture, and the everyday moments that make this city so special. Being part of the Perspectives program is an incredible opportunity to share my vision with travelers from around the world and to celebrate the diverse beauty of our city through art. My art pieces look to show perspectives of the city through a mix of seasons, weather, nature and city life so travellers can get a glimpse of life in the city at any moment in time.”

    –       Jonathan Gazze, Artist

    Call for Submissions
Local artists interested in participating in the Perspectives program are encouraged to submit their work on our website. Selected pieces will be showcased in the airport’s pedestrian tunnel for a duration of six months, and on its website.
