  • HIAA Achieves Financial Sustainability as Halifax Stanfield Gains Momentum

    May 9, 2024

Today, at its annual public meeting, Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) announced a return to financial sustainability, marked by a substantial increase in passenger volumes and revenue growth.

HIAA is reporting net income of $16.0 million in 2023 compared to a loss of $7.4 million in 2022. This turnaround comes as travel demand and available capacity approached historical norms, resulting in a significant boost in activity and revenue after three years of limited travel demand and diminished financial performance.

“In 2023, HIAA laid a solid foundation upon which we are excited to build,” said Joyce Carter, President & CEO, HIAA. “We worked together to restart and recruit numerous air passenger services, welcome millions of travellers, and build the systems needed to thrive long-term. I’m proud of the way we handled these challenges by harnessing the dedication of our team and partners to provide the seamless service Halifax Stanfield is known for.”

Total revenue was $139.5 million, up 25 per cent from 2022, as passenger volumes and airline seat capacity increased across Halifax Stanfield’s domestic, international, and transborder sectors. Strong overall passenger volumes, which were up 15 per cent, contributed to general airport operations and the airport capital improvement program, dramatically improving bottom-line performance.

Both aeronautical and non-aeronautical revenue increased in 2023. Non-aeronautical revenue, in particular, rose 26 per cent, providing more flexibility for future years as HIAA competes for expanded air service capacity for the community.

HIAA’s increased revenue outpaced growth in expenses, which increased by $4.7 million compared to 2022. While HIAA continues its efforts to limit expense growth, the increase in overall airport activity levels required more up-front spending, and the impacts of inflation drove up the cost of many services and supplies.

“This large positive swing in our financial results is very gratifying after the rapid deterioration in performance that we saw in 2020 and 2021 when the pandemic severely restricted travel demand,” said Paul Brigley, Vice President, Finance & CFO, HIAA. “Our positive financial position means that HIAA can continue to focus on strategic capital investments and delivering positive experiences for our passengers.”

HIAA continued to focus capital expenditures on strategic priorities and necessary investments to maintain safe and efficient airport operations. In 2023, capital expenditures totalled $30.1 million, a 23 per cent increase from 2022. In the coming years, HIAA will continue investing in facility and process improvements to meet rising peak-hour capacity constraints, sustainability goals, and planned accessibility enhancements.

“I am incredibly proud of the team’s achievements over the past year,” said Carter. “The dedication of the entire HIAA team has energized our operations and created a tangible feeling of excitement for the future. Truly, I can’t wait to see where this momentum takes us next!”

Air Canada becomes the first Canadian airline to offer service to Tulum*, with flights from Toronto and Montreal to the newest airport in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, and to Charleston, SC from Toronto. “We are excited to add two brand new destinations to our global network, Tulum, Mexico from our Toronto and Montreal hubs, and Charleston, South Carolina from Toronto, plus new Austin and St. Louis flights from Montreal in summer 2024. These new destinations and routes reflect Air Canada’s market leadership and network diversification strategy of adding capacity to in-demand leisure destinations such as Tulum and fast-growing, key metropolitan areas in the US,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President, Revenue and Network Planning, at Air Canada.

“We are also very pleased to grow our North American network from coast to coast with additional frequencies in key markets including Ottawa, Calgary, Saskatoon and Regina, in regional markets, and by resuming major seasonal routes earlier. By adding scale to our Canadian hubs, we are offering more travel choices and unparalleled access to and from our worldwide network. We look forward to welcoming our customers onboard,” concluded Mr. Galardo.

For summer 2024, Air Canada will be serving 120 destinations in Canada, the US and the Caribbean with up to 520 flights every day, translating to approximately 66,000 seats being dispatched, representing an increase of 5% percent North America and Caribbean seat capacity from 2023.

      New destination: Tulum*, Mexico

“I celebrate this great announcement from Air Canada. Without connectivity there is no tourism, and the two new routes to the new Tulum International Airport, which is ready to receive five million passengers, will boost the arrival of tourists from our second most important source market for international tourists,” stated Lic. Miguel Torruco Marqués, Secretario de Turismo, Mexico.

St. John’s, Montréal and Ottawa now served with Embraer E195-E2s

TORONTO, Dec. 11, 2023 /CNW/ – Porter Airlines is responding to strong East Coast demand by increasing capacity on three Halifax routes. Beginning March 31, service between St. John’s, Montréal and Ottawa will be operated on the Embraer E195-E2.

The Halifax-Ottawa route will have three daily, roundtrip flights. St. John’s and Montréal will operate with two daily roundtrips, increasing to three daily in May.

Porter Airlines is responding to strong East Coast demand by increasing capacity on three Halifax routes. St. John’s, Montréal and Ottawa now served with Embraer E195-E2s (CNW Group/Porter Airlines Inc.)

The routes are currently operated with the 78-seat Dash 8-400. The Embraer E195-E2 seats 132 passengers in an all-economy cabin. With a two-by-two configuration on both aircraft types, there are no middle seats on any Porter flight.

“We’re seeing continuing strong demand for Porter’s unique product across Eastern Canada. Increasing capacity in these markets from Halifax will provide more access for passengers looking to travel with ease across our full North American network,” said Kevin Jackson, executive vice president and chief commercial officer. “Porter has been serving Halifax since 2007, and this reaffirms our ongoing commitment to the airport and the community.”

Passengers will continue to receive the elevated level of service they are used to when flying with Porter, including free wine and beer served in glassware and premium snacks. This generosity continues on the Embraer E195-E2, and also includes free, fast WiFi for all passengers.

“We are thrilled that Porter Airlines is responding to the demand in Atlantic Canada by increasing capacity on routes that have been underserved since the pandemic. Using the Embraer E195-E2 jet aircraft on these three routes will provide our passengers with more opportunities to enjoy the exceptional Porter experience. As a strong, long-standing partner since 2007, this expansion reaffirms Porter’s commitment to our airport and community,” said Joyce Carter, president and CEO, Halifax International Airport Authority.

The Embraer E195-E2 is the quietest and most fuel-efficient single-aisle jet aircraft measured by sound and CO2 emissions. The E195-E2 is certified to the strictest international standard for aircraft noise, at 65% quieter than previous generation types.

Porter recently exercised purchase rights to place a firm order for 25 Embraer E195-E2 passenger jets, adding to its 50 existing firm orders. The new aircraft will be used to extend Porter’s award-winning service to destinations throughout North America.

The Dash 8-400s will be redeployed to increase frequencies in other markets. More information will be available soon.

“WestJet has connected Halifax Stanfield and key European destinations for several years, and we’re thrilled they plan to offer three non-stop transatlantic routes again next summer,” said Joyce Carter, President & CEO, Halifax International Airport Authority. “Dublin and London Gatwick were popular routes in the past, both for Atlantic Canadians and Europeans, and we’re delighted to add Edinburgh to our route map in 2024.”

“We are thrilled to see the return of WestJet’s non-stop flights to these key destinations. Europe is an important market for Nova Scotia, and direct flights play a key role in leveraging these markets as people want to spend less time in transit and more time at their destination. The return of these routes help connect us to the global marketplace, bring new investment, support tourism growth and promote our province as a great place to visit, live and invest,” said Honourable Susan Corkum-Greek, Minister of Economic Development.

“We are delighted West Jet is renewing its commitment to Halifax and the Martimes by adding new direct flights across the pond, a valued travel destination for so many, with the promise of a boon for tourism in our region. Kudos to Joyce Carter and her team for the exceptional work to increase air access to and from Halifax Stanfield International Airport,” said Mayor Mike Savage.
