  • Halifax Stanfield Serves Over 3 Million Passengers in 2022, is Among Canada’s Fastest Recovering Airports

From record-low passenger volumes to peak travel days occasionally surpassing pre-pandemic volumes, in 2022, Halifax Stanfield experienced a dramatic increase in travel demand and ended the year serving 3,107,425 passengers. With passenger activity up 189 per cent, Halifax Stanfield was Canada’s second fastest-recovering Tier 1 airport and the country’s sixth busiest airport.

“Surpassing the three million passenger mark feels like an incredible milestone in our airport’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Joyce Carter, President & CEO, Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA). “Everyone at Halifax Stanfield has been working incredibly hard, and this year-end result exceeds our expectations and strongly indicates that we are on the right track.”

While COVID-19 continued to put a damper on flight and passenger activity early in the year, fortunately, activity took off in late spring, in concurrence with pandemic travel restrictions being eased or removed. Over the year, Halifax Stanfield launched more than a dozen new and returning domestic, U.S. and international air service routes. Two new airline partners, Lynx Air and Eurowings Discover, began offering expanded domestic and European connections, and two new destinations not previously served from Halifax – Windsor, ON and Washington, DC – were added to the airport’s route map.

“Our strong summer and fall travel seasons were bolstered by the long list of new and returning routes to domestic destinations, as well as the return of U.S. and international services, resulting in a more successful year than anticipated,” said Marie Manning, Vice President, Business Development & Chief Commercial Officer. “This momentum was possible because of the incredible collaboration between HIAA and our many airline and industry partners, concessions, and stakeholders. We are grateful to everyone who has played a role in supporting our passengers and partners in recovery.”

Additional service enhancements in 2022 to meet growing demand included reopening the Park’N Fly lot in time for March Break, allowing sun seekers and budget-conscious travellers to take advantage of this discounted parking option. HIAA also celebrated the grand opening of four new food and beverage concessions over the year. Now, seventy per cent of the airport terminal building concessions are open, up from 10 per cent at the height of the pandemic.

Other areas, such as U.S. travel, saw slower growth in 2022. Although airlines continue to be challenged by pilot shortages, there is a great deal of interest in resuming these services when feasible.

The International sector showed a stronger recovery in 2022. Looking ahead to 2023, it is expected that fewer non-stop routes to Europe will temper growth in the near term, but demand remains strong for services to London Heathrow (Air Canada), Frankfurt (Condor and Eurowings Discover) and destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico.

HIAA’s air service development team continues to work closely with existing and prospective airlines to increase Nova Scotia’s connections to the world.

“Ongoing challenges, such as the pilot and overall labour shortage, aircraft availability, and inflation, have made us cautiously optimistic about what 2023 will bring, but we can certainly look back on 2022 as a busy year at Halifax Stanfield,” said Carter. “We are proud to be Atlantic Canada’s largest airport and one of Canada’s fastest-recovering airports, and we are well-positioned for what’s to come.”

“If we didn’t already see you at Halifax Stanfield in 2022, we can’t wait to welcome you in 2023.”

  • WestJet announces temporary transatlantic route suspensions from Halifax

    By WestJet | January 30, 2023 | 2 min read

WestJet today is announcing that it has temporarily suspended transatlantic service between Halifax and Europe as part of its 2023 summer schedule. Today’s announcement comes as a result of the airline’s strategic decision to suspend transatlantic flying from select Canadian cities as it continues to responsibly manage and recover its network in response to capacity constraints impacting the aviation ecosystem.

The airline remains committed to engaging with local stakeholders and community members to evaluate the return of transatlantic service in 2024, as well as for all network opportunities moving forward. WestJet’s focus remains on positioning its network to meet the travel demands of Canadians, while strengthening its footprint across Eastern Canada through sun and leisure travel which will be bolstered by its recent acquisition announcement of 42 additional Boeing MAX aircraft.

“Halifax remains an integral part of our network and we understand this is disappointing news for our guests and the local community,” said John Weatherill, WestJet Group Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer. “As we continue to responsibly balance our schedule alongside operational requirements, capacity constraints and the deployment of our aircraft across Canada, we are making these difficult decisions now to enable us to re-position our investments to best serve the province for years to come.”

WestJet has proudly served Halifax for 19 years and while these routes have not been available for sale, the airline is prioritizing providing guests with as much advance notice as possible and giving firm clarity on routes that have been in question. As WestJet plans to announce its summer schedule in the coming weeks, the airline looks forward to enhancing domestic offerings from coast-to-coast, inclusive of increased service between Halifax and Western Canada.

Non-stop routes from Halifax now include Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto City, Toronto Pearson and St. John’s, N.L. A number of connecting flights are also available at various airports on Porter and its partner airlines.

“Porter Airlines has been serving our community for 15 years, and we couldn’t be more excited that they are choosing to grow their existing network here at Halifax Stanfield. Operating on the new Embraer E195-E2 jets, this route will be a wonderful addition, providing additional connectivity that benefits leisure and business travellers alike. We value our ongoing partnership with Porter and look forward to the inaugural flight in February 2023,” says Joyce Carter, President & CEO, Halifax International Airport Authority.

Flights on the Halifax-Toronto Pearson route will operate on 132-seat Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. Porter’s onboard service offers every passenger an elevated economy experience that includes no middle seats, complimentary beer and wine served in real glassware, a selection of premium snacks, and free, fast WiFi. This is all provided at highly competitive fares.

Passengers can also choose the new all-inclusive PorterReserve fare option that includes features such as dedicated check-in, extra legroom, and checked baggage, included in one bundled price. For travellers who want to choose which features matter most to them, PorterClassic offers perks available for purchase à la carte.

Porter has up to 100 E195-E2 aircraft on order, providing the ability to operate throughout North America, including destinations across Canada, the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean. The airline also serves a regional network of more than 20 destinations on its De Havilland Dash 8-400 fleet, operating from a base at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

Flights are now available for booking at www.flyporter.com and with travel agents. Porter Escapes vacation packages will be available soon. New routes will be announced regularly.

    About Porter

Since 2006, Porter Airlines has been elevating the experience of economy air travel for every passenger, providing genuine hospitality with style, care and charm. Porter’s fleet of Embraer E195-E2 and De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft serves a North American network from Eastern Canada. • Porter Airlines challenging North American aviation with new flying experience that elevates economy travel

Free WiFi, fresh meals, enhanced legroom and new all-inclusive economy experience among features added to existing signature onboard service

TORONTO, Dec. 6, 2022 /CNW/ – Porter Airlines is unveiling an exceptional new economy air travel experience that challenges what every North American airline offers. Building on its distinct, longstanding regional service, Porter will elevate economy flying for everyone in its greatly expanding network.

Coinciding with the airline’s strategy to grow in markets throughout North America using new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, as well as its existing De Havilland Dash 8-400 fleet, travellers will enjoy a new level of generosity and thoughtful service that is non-existent in economy air travel today.

    Hospitality and comfort

Porter’s existing signature in-flight service, featuring complimentary beer and wine served in glassware, along with a selection of premium snacks, will continue as part of the journey. The introduction of the E195-E2 also brings all passengers free, fast WiFi, with full access to web surfing or streaming favourite entertainment platforms. On longer flights, the option of fresh meals made with real food and healthy ingredients is also available.

Porter’s current two-by-two cabin seating is also coming to longer-haul jet travel. This ensures that every passenger enjoys more personal space, thanks to being the only airline with no middle seats on every flight.

“Porter is meaningfully investing in making economy air travel enjoyable for every passenger in ways that no one else is,” said Michael Deluce, president and CEO, Porter Airlines. “Other airlines have been focused on taking away perks and comforts for decades, but we believe that people should actually enjoy flying as economy passengers. It is possible, as we know from having already redefined regional travel over 16 years ago. Now we’re ready to do it for a broader North American market in a way that no traditional or low cost carrier is willing to. It’s an enhanced experience that builds on our reputation for providing an elevated level of service to every passenger at reasonable prices in a single class of service.”

The E195-E2 is the most environmentally-friendly single-aisle aircraft, at 65% quieter and up to 25% cleaner than previous-generation technology. (CNW Group/Porter Airlines)

Porter’s new E195-E2 aircraft will have a 132-seat, all-economy configuration, offering a number of legroom options. This complements its current fleet of 78-seat Dash 8-400 aircraft that will now offer passengers two legroom options.

    PorterReserve

Porter is introducing a new, all-inclusive economy experience called PorterReserve, that is unlike anything offered today in North America. When passengers purchase a PorterReserve fare, they receive all of the perks economy travellers may want for one reasonable price that is significantly lower than business class. The fare includes dedicated airport check-in, early boarding, enhanced legroom, fresh meals on longer flights, Porter’s signature beer, wine and premium snacks, cocktails, two checked bags and the ability to change flights without a fee.

PorterReserve will be available on every Porter flight. When flying on the E195-E2, this includes the first four rows of the cabin (16 seats) and offers 36 inches of seat pitch, which is similar to business class legroom on other narrowbody aircraft. On Porter’s Dash 8-400 fleet, PorterReserve will be in the first two rows (six seats) with 32 inches of seat pitch.

    PorterClassic

Porter’s traditional economy experience is now referred to as PorterClassic. This is the classic Porter service that includes free beer and wine in glassware, and a selection of premium snacks. On flights over 2.5 hours, passengers may also purchase the same high-quality individual fresh entrées and cocktails available in PorterReserve. There is also the option to select additional perks, such as extra legroom, extra baggage and travel flexibility.

Passengers travelling with a PorterClassic fare will have 30 inches of seat pitch on every Porter aircraft. On the E195-E2, they may also purchase one of 20 PorterStretch seats, offering a minimum of 34 inches of seat pitch.

The PorterReserve and PorterClassic experiences, one all-inclusive and the other à la carte, respond to what’s well known about economy travel today – that airlines make many travellers feel undervalued, disrespected and stressed about flying. Porter conducted significant market research across Canada to fully understand what economy passengers want and has created an experience for them that transforms expectations.

“Other airlines save their best service for a small number of passengers who can afford expensive premium fares or have special status, and the quality onboard is often still inferior,” said Kevin Jackson, executive vice president and chief commercial officer, Porter Airlines. “The vast majority of people travel in economy and must tolerate an eroded experience with few, if any, amenities or services. Porter’s approach disrupts this model by showing that it is possible to respect the needs of economy travellers and make them feel valued by providing a quality, generous experience at competitive prices. We will do this unlike any other North American airline, with style, care and charm.”

    New fares
Porter will soon expand its fare options to support its broader product offering. Its four existing fare options will be aligned with PorterClassic and two new fares are being introduced with the PorterReserve experience. Fare details will be available at the same time as the first E195-E2 routes are announced.

    New destinations

Porter is the North American launch customer for Embraer’s E195-E2, providing the ability to operate throughout North America, including to the west coast, southern U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean. The aircraft will initially be deployed from Toronto Pearson International Airport, with Halifax, Montreal and Ottawa also seeing new service with the E195-E2 over time. The first of up to 100 new aircraft are scheduled to be delivered to Porter this year and initial routes will be announced in December.

Porter’s existing Dash 8-400 regional fleet will continue operating to more than 20 destinations, with a main base at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

    Sustainability

The E195-E2 is the most environmentally-friendly single-aisle aircraft, at 65% quieter and up to 25% cleaner than previous-generation technology. It has the lowest fuel consumption per seat and per trip among 120- to 150-seat aircraft, and is the quietest single-aisle jet flying today. Combined with its existing De Havilland Dash 8-400s, Porter will have one of the most environmentally sustainable aircraft fleets in the world.

Sustainability is at the heart of the new onboard catering menu design, with a priority on reducing and eventually eliminating single-use plastics onboard, providing biodegradable cups and cutlery, and eco-friendly packaging. Catering partners also feature high-quality Canadian brands that will be announced prior to the introduction of E195-E2 flights.

The complete catering menu is available on flights operating for 2.5 hours or longer. Shorter flights have a full offering of complimentary snacks and beverages.

  • Sunwing marks its return to Atlantic Canada with winter schedule announcement for six airports

Tour operator offering convenient weekly flights from Halifax, Moncton, Fredericton, St. John’s, Deer Lake and Gander starting in January

TORONTO, Oct. 05, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Amid the Canadian government’s removal of all border and travel measures, Sunwing is pleased to announce its return to Atlantic Canada this winter season, with convenient weekly flights from six airports beginning in January until May. Sunwing’s resumption of winter flights from airports in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland comes after a difficult two years brought on by the pandemic and resulting travel restrictions, and is a signal of the tour operator’s ongoing commitment to eastern Canada and offering its residents seamless travel options from their local airport of choice.

“It’s been a difficult few years for the entire travel industry, particularly in New Brunswick and Newfoundland where long-lasting travel restrictions have unfortunately prevented us from offering our winter flight program since March 2020, much to our disappointment,” said Deana Murphy, Vice President of Retail Sales for Sunwing. “Now that all travel measures have been lifted as of October 1, 2022, we are excited to be back and doubling down on our commitment to the regions with weekly winter flights to a variety of popular sun destinations.”

Sunwing’s winter schedule announcement for Halifax in Nova Scotia, Moncton and Fredericton in New Brunswick, and St. John’s, Deer Lake and Gander in Newfoundland comes on the heels of the tour operator’s recent winter schedule announcement for four larger airports across the country, and amid increasing customer demand for winter travel that is seeing capacity growing by more than 140% over last year.

“We are thrilled to return to Atlantic Canada and share our winter flight lineup, which will help make it easier for our customers in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland to head to the tropics this winter season,” said Andrew Dawson, President of Tour Operations for Sunwing. “We have a longstanding commitment in eastern Canada and are proud of being able to connect residents across the region with flights to a wide selection of destinations, including customer favourites such as Cancun, Punta Cana and Varadero, plus newer destinations being offered out of Halifax this year, including Cayo Largo, Cuba and Melbourne, Florida. With travel rebounding and demand for all inclusive travel continuing to rise, we encourage our customers to book early to save more under our wing during the peak winter travel months.”

  • Sunwing goes galactic with the exciting addition of Melbourne, Florida to its winter lineup

Plus, the tour operator returns to the popular vacation destinations of Orlando and Miami

TORONTO, Sept. 14, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — For years, Sunwing has brought Canadians to Florida’s Sunshine State to experience its tropical-like climate and attractive offerings. This winter, the tour operator is thrilled to announce the addition of Melbourne, a brand-new destination along the south of Florida’s Space Coast offering more sun, beach and out-of-this-world exploration.

The tour operator will also be returning to two beloved destinations in the United States this winter with multiple direct flights from Toronto and Montréal, including Orlando, one of Florida’s greatest attractions, and Miami, a popular vacation destination for city exploration and cruise departures.

“This winter, we’re thrilled to be returning to Florida with Melbourne as our newest destination offering for Sunwing customers,” said Andrew Dawson, President of Tour Operations for Sunwing. “In addition to the desirable destinations of Orlando and Miami, there’s much to explore along Florida’s Space Coast with beautiful beaches, a historic downtown core and nearby attractions, plus easy access to Port Canaveral for winter cruise sailings. Given the incredible customer demand for sun vacations this winter, we look forward to bringing more customers to Melbourne to experience its family-friendly charm.”

“We are incredibly excited about the new service being offered by Sunwing as it opens up an important market for us,” said Peter Cranis, Executive Director, Space Coast Office of Tourism. “No other country brings more visitors to our region than Canada, and now we have a great opportunity to serve them well as they choose the Space Coast for their winter vacations. We look forward to a long-lasting partnership with Sunwing and introducing Canadians to all that Melbourne has to offer.”

In Melbourne, or “The Harbour City”, travellers can enjoy the sun and sand at Indialantic, Indian Harbour Beach, Satellite Beach and Melbourne Beach, home to one of the world’s most significant Sea Turtle nesting habitats, or tour the local culture in Melbourne’s historic downtown centre with authentic cuisine, famed mural art, shopping and street festivals.

Travellers can also sample fresh seafood in Port Canaveral, tour the Grapefruit Trails in Palm Bay or interact with over 900 animals at Brevard Zoo. Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex, one of Florida’s most popular attractions an hour outside of Melbourne, offers up-close views of Space Shuttle Atlantis, life-sized Mars rover replicas and NASA rockets. Vacationers can also drive to Orlando for a day of fun at Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando.

”The exciting announcement of our partnership with Melbourne Orlando International Airport and Florida’s Space Coast Office of Tourism comes at a crucial time when demand for holiday and winter travel is at an all-time high,” added Eric Rodriguez, Executive Vice President of Partner Development for Sunwing. “Following the recent expansion to the passenger terminal in Melbourne, our customers can enjoy a seamless vacation experience from beginning to end and enjoy their travels in Melbourne with ease.
