  • London International Airport Opens the First Airport Ice Rink in Canada!

    January 18, 2024

    The YXU Community Rink returns for another winter season of plane spotting while skating!

    LONDON, ON – The London International Airport (YXU) has officially opened their outdoor rink, just in time for the upcoming school PA day this Friday. Our community has shown excitement for our popular rink to return this winter, and the weather has finally arrived to allow it to freeze. The team at YXU built the rink and boards themselves, including the lighting system for evening skating, as a way to give back to the community. Scott McFadzean, President and CEO, says “We continue to look for creative ways to engage and give back to our community here at the airport. In addition to offering direct flights to multiple sun destinations this winter and the ability to connect to anywhere in the world from London International Airport, we also want to offer other reasons to come out to our airport.  There are not many locations in the city that allow outdoor ice hockey, we’re proud to be able to provide a fun and safe place for staff, tenants and the public to skate and play hockey, while enjoying the bonus of spotting aircraft arriving and departing. ”

    It’s a classic “backyard rink” that, for now, relies on cold temperatures to freeze. As we’ve had a few days of a cold streak, the rink has officially opened! We invited none other than London’s favourite OHL team, the London Knights to come out for the first skate! Players Oliver Bonk and Jackson Edward are pictured, dropping the first puck.

    “It’s great that London has a space to enjoy hockey at its roots on the outdoor rink and kudos to our partners at YXU for making this happen for the community” said Alex Brown, Marketing Director of the London Knights. “The players all grew up enjoying time with their friends and family on a pond or nearby community rink – having fun is what it’s all about!”

    To find the YXU Ice Rink, head east to the end of Oxford St. and turn left down Crumlin Sideroad. Go around the bend on and onto Hurricane Rd. Free parking is available along the fence in front of the Airside Operations Center, east of the rink. Please do not park along the road coming in on Hurricane Rd/Spitfire Rd.

    The rink is ‘use at your own risk’ and is not supervised. Children 5 years of age and under must wear CSA approved helmet. The London International Airport strongly recommends that all users wear CSA head protection.

    It is open from 07:00 to 21:00 every day and includes outdoor lighting and a hut to get ready in. The availability is dependent on consistent cold temperatures, so stay tuned on our social channels @flyyxu for updates.

    The ice rink is one of several recreation options, free to use at London International Airport. There is the YXU Airpark, located on Creamery Rd. (off Dundas St.), that is equipped with free parking and informational signage on aviation history and aircraft to look for. In the summer months, YXU offers beach volleyball and pickleball courts.

    WHITEHORSE, YT, Jan. 12, 2024 /CNW/ – An efficient and reliable transportation system is essential to making life more affordable for Canadians. The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring our supply chains support economic growth and create good, middle-class jobs, while making them resilient and adaptable to the effects of climate change.

    Today, the Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodriguez, announced an investment of up to $186.2 million under the National Trade Corridors Fund for a project that includes major upgrades at the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport.

    The airport infrastructure requires improvements to maintain existing essential services such as passenger and charter flights, as well as cargo handling activities.

    The project consists of four main improvements:

    • upgrading the parallel runway;
    • reconstructing the main runway;
    • replacing the Whitehorse air maintenance facility, and
    • building a new rotary operations (helicopter) area.

    In addition to upgrading the airport’s critical infrastructure, the project aims to enhance safety measures and increase operational capacity to better support Yukon’s mining and tourism sectors. The project will also work to increase the airport’s resilience against the impacts of climate change.

    The Government of Canada continues to make investments to strengthen the country’s supply chains, promote economic growth and enhance the opportunities for our businesses to expand into global markets. This represents another long-term commitment to work with stakeholders on strategic infrastructure projects to address transportation bottlenecks, vulnerabilities, and congestion along Canada’s trade corridors.

  • Minister of Transport announces funding to increase cargo volume capacity and efficiency at the Vancouver International Airport

    VANCOUVER, BC, Jan. 11, 2024 /CNW/ – An efficient and reliable transportation system is essential to making life more affordable for Canadians. The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring our supply chains support economic growth and create good, middle-class jobs for Canadians, while ensuring they are resilient and adaptive to the impacts of climate change.

    Today, the Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodriguez, announced an investment of up to $74.3 million under the National Trade Corridors Fund for an expansion at the Vancouver International Airport. This will equip the airport to handle more cargo, as well as improve its facilities and efficiency, and reduce pollution.

    This project will enable the movement of larger aircraft between cargo facilities and the runway. It will:

    • increase parking space capacity to accommodate four additional widebody freighter aircraft;
    • upgrade an access road; and
    • prepare the site for the construction of a new air cargo warehouse.

    This project will also support business growth of Canadian carriers, including Air Canada, WestJet and Cargojet. It is estimated that the project will reduce truck travel by up to 229 million kilometres over 30 years because local exporters will not need to transport their products to an airport further away. This will improve highway safety and reduce GHG emissions.

    The goods exported through Vancouver International Airport support key economic growth in sectors such as advanced manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. In addition, traditional sectors such as agriculture and fisheries need reliable air cargo export shipments to ensure perishable items can reach global markets in a timely manner.

    In total, improvements will boost the airport’s cargo capacity by 160,000 tonnes, representing a $22 billion increase to Canada’s trade potential annually.

    Moreover, by making room for fuel-efficient widebody freighter aircraft at the terminal, pollution generated by the movement of air cargo through Vancouver International Airport will be reduced by up to 25 percent. It will enable the airport to handle more air cargo while also helping create a greener transportation system in Canada.

    The Government of Canada continues to take action by strengthening the country’s supply chains, to promote economic growth and enhance the opportunities for our businesses to expand into global markets. This represents another long-term commitment to work with stakeholders on strategic infrastructure projects to address transportation bottlenecks, vulnerabilities, and congestion along Canada’s trade corridors.

    Quick Facts

    • This project will benefit shippers by offering more flexibility for shipment size, fewer limitations on transporting machinery and electrical goods, and fewer restrictions imposed by passenger schedules and demand.
