  • Edmonton International Airport (YEG) and DTI Partner to pioneer hydrogen dual-fuel technology in runway snow sweepers

April 24, 2025 (Edmonton, AB) – Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is taking hydrogen adoption to new heights by partnering with Diesel Tech Industries (DTI) to explore the integration of the Guardian Hydrogen Diesel System on two of the airport’s heavy-duty runway snow sweepers.

YEG will be Canada’s first airport to explore the adoption of DTI’s innovative hydrogen and diesel technology in its runway snow sweepers – vehicles considered from a hard-to-abate fleet. With funding support from Alberta Innovates, the initiative is designed to reduce YEG’s carbon emissions from ground operations, advance hydrogen adoption in the transportation sector and support the global aviation industry’s journey to explore more sustainable practices.

The runway snow sweepers, which currently operate on diesel fuel, will be retrofitted using the Guardian Hydrogen Diesel System, which holds the potential for existing Tier 3 diesel engines to use hydrogen as a supplementary fuel while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions without requiring extensive infrastructure modifications.  The project will require addressing the unique challenges of higher-emission Tier 3 engines, including a more demanding, high-load operational cycle and the complexity of the dual-engine configuration used for airport snow removal.

The system offers immediate benefits, including lower diesel consumption, reduced emissions and advanced data tracking for fleet management and regulatory compliance.

“This project presents a bold opportunity to push the boundaries of hydrogen adoption, particularly within the aviation industry. Reducing emissions from airport ground fleets, especially runway snow sweepers that are designed to operate in demanding winter climates, is a crucial step toward sustainability. Hydrogen/diesel dual-fuel technology offers an innovative pathway to decarbonization, and we are excited to continue to showcase the practical benefits of hydrogen at YEG.”

    — Peter Agnew, Vice President, Infrastructure, Facilities & Airside Operations

“Edmonton International Airport, in partnership with DTI, is a groundbreaking achievement for international travel and the hydrogen economy on a global scale. Airports are vital transportation hubs that operate internationally, making this project a significant demonstration of hydrogen’s potential in high-demand environments. The success of this initiative will showcase how hydrogen can transform off-road operations worldwide, proving that sustainability and efficiency can go hand in hand on or off-road.”

    — Rebecca Goldsack, COO, Diesel Tech Industries

“This project is a compelling example of hydrogen adoption in Alberta which accelerates the transition from research to market-ready solutions. Alberta is a hub for high-impact innovation partnerships that make a difference for the province’s economy, its people—and in our partnership with YEG, for the over 7 million passengers who use YEG annually.”

    — Mike Mahon, CEO, Alberta Innovates

The conversion of the runway sweepers will begin in spring 2025 and take approximately one year to complete. Together, YEG and DTI aim to leverage this partnership to inspire further adoption of hydrogen technology across commercial transportation and energy sectors, underscoring Alberta’s efforts in the global commitment to fostering a worldwide hydrogen economy.

This initiative supports a measurable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from YEG’s airside operations and contributes to Alberta and Canada’s decarbonization goals. It will also help de-risk hydrogen technology offtake in Alberta, foster innovation in the province’s growing hydrogen economy and contribute to developing a skilled clean energy workforce.

Air Canada has also donated a row of aircraft seats to Edmonton International Airport’s new Sensory Room, which was unveiled today and aims to offer respite for neurodivergent passengers, including those with autism, anxiety or other sensory processing challenges.

“Autism Aviation Days are more than just practice runs — they’re a gateway to confidence,” says Rebecca Smillie-Nedelec, Director, Community Engagement at Air Canada. “For many families, the opportunity to practice the airport and flight process in a supportive and flexible environment can make their future air travel dreams a reality. These events have a lasting impact, helping children feel more comfortable and ultimately improving the quality of life for families who may have otherwise avoid flying.”

“YEG is dedicated to being an airport for everyone, and we believe that neurodiverse individuals and their families should have the opportunity to experience the airport and flight process with confidence and comfort,” says Carmen Donnelly, Vice President, Passenger Experience and Terminal Operations at YEG. “We are grateful to be part of Autism Aviation Days, partnering with Air Canada, the Air Canada Foundation, Autism Edmonton and many other organizations that share our vision of creating a welcoming and accessible airport experience for all. We look forward to opening the doors to new experiences and adventures for travellers who may have previously been apprehensive about air travel.”

“We are incredibly excited to partner with the Air Canada Foundation, Air Canada and the Edmonton Airport to bring our members an opportunity to practice this airport experience. Travel is such an important part of life, but for many Autistic people, it may be a sensory and/or transitional nightmare. Preparing to fly, the experience at the airport, and flying can be overwhelming to anyone,” said Morine Rossi, Programs Manager at Autism Edmonton. “By giving families and individuals this opportunity to practice in a safe and planned way, we are opening doors to unlimited opportunities of travel and adventures.  We are so happy that we can help provide an opportunity to remove barriers to Autistic and neurodivergent members, and to teach staff and volunteers involved in this process how they can be helpful and supportive during these transitions.  It is a wonderful step towards Autism Acceptance as we recognize this day internationally on April 2nd”.

In 2024, Air Canada and the Air Canada Foundation held four Autism Aviation Days, helping over 125 children and their families learn more about air travel.

The next Autism Aviation Day will take place on May 10 in Kamloops.

  • Porter expands service throughout North America this summer

    Network capacity increasing by 25%

TORONTO / March 31, 2025 – Porter Airlines is updating its 2025 summer schedule. Increases in capacity are spread across new destinations, the continuation of winter routes into summer, and added frequencies. Domestic flying during this period is now 80% of total network capacity, up from 75% in its original summer plan. This is balanced by targeted frequency reductions in select U.S. markets. Despite the changes, Porter’s presence in the Canada-U.S. market will be 25% larger than last summer.

The summer schedule is supported by 10 additional Embraer E195-E2 aircraft compared to 2024, growing the number of jets in the airline’s fleet to 44 (of an order up to 100). These operate in conjunction with the airline’s regional fleet of 29 De Havilland Dash 8-400s.

“Our goal is to fly where our customers want to travel, and this is a moment Canada is at the top of many people’s list,” said Kevin Jackson, president, Porter Airlines. “We are adding routes and increasing flights in regions across the country to meet this demand.”

The updated domestic schedule includes the following details over peak summer operations:

    Route ChangesNew Peak Summer Schedule
NEW Moncton – Toronto Pearson5x weekly
    Vancouver – Toronto Pearson6x daily
    Victoria – Toronto Pearson12x weekly
    Charlottetown – Toronto Pearson7x weekly
    St. John’s – Toronto Pearson14x weekly
    Kelowna – Toronto Pearson7x weekly
Deer Lake – Toronto Pearson3x weekly
Thunder Bay – Toronto Pearson7x weekly
    Calgary – Toronto Pearson4x daily

    Hamilton – Calgary6x weekly
    Hamilton – Edmonton7x weekly
    Hamilton – Halifax7x weekly
    Victoria – Ottawa7x weekly
    Halifax – Deer Lake7x weekly

    Highlights:

    • Toronto Pearson-Moncton is a new route, which complements existing flights between Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport-Moncton and Ottawa-Moncton.
    • Hamilton-Vancouver service doubles to 14 weekly flights, representative of strong pre-booking demand for this new route taking off in June.
    • Montre´al-Vancouver and Toronto-St. John’s both double planned service to 14 weekly flights.

“These routes complement existing schedules by creating more non-stop flight options and greater connectivity for travelling beyond hubs in Toronto, Ottawa, Montre´al and Halifax,” added Jackson.

Porter is also launching new service between Toronto Pearson – New York-LaGuardia and Montre´al – New York-Newark this spring. This is supported by expanding winter seasonal service through the summer to destinations such as Phoenix and San Diego, and increasing year-over-year capacity for Las Vegas and San Francisco.

“Porter has increased capacity in the U.S. by 25% year-over-year. Based on our current spring bookings, the number of passengers travelling on Porter across our transborder routes is up more than our capacity, demonstrating strong traveller demand for Porter’s elevated experience. As we shift some capacity to domestic routes in the near term to account for consumer travel interest, we are still seeing an overall increase in U.S. travel on Porter flights,” said Jackson.

On every flight, passengers enjoy Porter’s signature service, including no middle seats, complimentary wine and beer served in glassware and premium snacks. Routes operated with the new Embraer E195-E2 also have free, fast WiFi available for everyone.

    Spring

    • YEG took to the skies with WestJet’s inaugural flight to Atlanta. The new route results from the growing ties between the two regions and opens doors for new partnerships.
    • WestJet began non-stop summer seasonal service to Nashville and San Francisco, showcasing the importance of leisure and business destinations.
    • Porter Airlines, which began operating at YEG in 2023, added Montreal to its collection of non-stop destinations from YEG.
    • WestJet revealed its Edmonton winter 2024/2025 flight schedule, outlining significant growth and commitment to the region, boosting its overall capacity by more than 20% compared to winter 2023.

    Summer

With four times weekly service in 2024, KLM announced that it will grow to five times weekly service in summer 2025, as well as up to six times weekly in June 2025. This increase in service demonstrates proven demand and growth in the Edmonton market.
    • WestJet announced its largest summer schedule from Edmonton in the airline’s history by launching new US routes – Chicago and Salt Lake City – and significantly enhanced domestic connectivity, including Grande Prairie, Regina, Saskatoon and Kelowna. The summer 2025 schedule will be a 23% increase over summer 2024.
    • United Airlines announced its new non-stop service to Houston and Chicago. With this announcement, United will fly to three non-stop destinations from Edmonton, including its double daily service to Denver.

    Winter

    • Flair added increased frequency to Vancouver and Abbotsford from YEG. Flair currently serves many non-stop destinations from YEG, and the airport looks forward to continuing to see this number grow and welcome more visitors, businesses and opportunities to the Edmonton Metro Region.

YEG looks forward to working alongside partners in the region to connect more businesses, travellers, friends and families. YEG is committed to continuing to offer more flights to more places while ensuring a safe, sustainable and welcoming environment for all.

As an economic engine in the region, Villeneuve Airport (ZVL) continued to support general aviation, training and development opportunities and serviced more than 53,600 aircraft movements in 2024.

“We are delighted to welcome Porter Airlines to Hamilton International as a strategic airline partner, as we invest in the success of our airport today and well into the future.” said Cole Horncastle, Executive Managing Director, John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. “Porter’s elevated economy service, on-board experience and air service connecting passengers to and from key destinations across Canada are a perfect fit for the stress-free, convenient airport experience we offer here at Hamilton International.”

“I am absolutely thrilled to welcome Porter Airlines to Hamilton’s John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport and to see Vantage Group’s continued investment to enhance passenger facilities. This is a major win for the City of Hamilton and will significantly transform our airport’s passenger service offerings. For years, the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport has been home to Canada’s largest domestic overnight express cargo service, fueling our community’s economic growth and creating jobs,” said Mayor Andrea Horwath. “But Hamiltonians have also longed for more robust passenger options to serve travellers from our city and surrounding communities. The strategic partnership between Porter Airlines and Vantage Group/TradePort, with whom the city recently completed a successful new long-term lease, is a significant investment that will rejuvenate and boost passenger services and will benefit residents, businesses, and the broader region for decades to come.”

Porter is the only airline with comprehensive schedules at all three major airports in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area.
