Greater Toronto Airports Authority awards $387,000 in funding to six organizations to help combat underemployment

From providing employment opportunities to Ukrainian newcomers and mentoring for jobs in aviation to opening pathways to careers in the arts, our commitment to surrounding communities has never been stronger
TORONTO, Oct. 25, 2022 /CNW/ – After an extensive evaluation period, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) has announced the recipients of its 2022 Uplift Fund. Six organizations have received a total of $387,000 for programs designed to break down barriers to employment and cultivate opportunity for communities around Toronto Pearson.

ACCES Employment‘s Ukrainian Newcomer Assistance Program will provides employment service supports to recent Ukrainian newcomers, to help secure employment and succeed at meaningful employment in the GTA.
Brands for Canada‘s Suitable Impressions Program is a first impressions-focused employment program that coaches participants to succeed in a job interview.

Participants are mentored by industry professionals to gain unique and valuable experience they can bring with them into the workforce.
The Uplift Fund—part of the GTAA’s community investment program, the Propeller Project—has been investing and partnering in programming, advocacy and research to support local area residents to gain the skills, connections and opportunities needed to be meaningfully employed since 2018. Given the dramatic effects that COVID-19 has had on employment in the communities Toronto Pearson serves, never before has support of this nature been more important.
“We’re delighted to announce this year’s Uplift Fund recipients, who work to lift up the communities we serve,” said Robyn Connelly, Director, Sustainability and Social Impact, GTAA. “Although COVID-19 has had a significant impact on our business, it has also disproportionally impacted our neighbours. We’re looking forward to working collaboratively with these like-minded organizations to address underemployment, and in doing so support a strong post-pandemic recovery for the Greater Toronto Area.”

Sunwing announces its initial winter schedule for four airports from coast to coast amid strong surge in customer demand for sun travel
The tour operator expects demand will continue growing in response to lifting of border measures

TORONTO, Sept. 29, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Following the positive news that the Canadian government will lift all border and travel measures effective October 1, 2022, and amid a strong surge in customer demand for winter travel, Sunwing is pleased to announce its initial winter flight schedules for four large airports from coast to coast, with the winter lineup for various regional markets where Sunwing maintains a strong presence – from Atlantic Canada to the Prairies and Northern Ontario – to be announced over the coming weeks.
The tour operator’s winter schedule announcement for Toronto, Montréal, Calgary and Vancouver airports comes on the heels of customer capacity returning to 2019 levels, with winter capacity already growing by more than 140% over the previous year and expected to climb even further once border measures are removed on October 1st. GTAA Announces Changes to Aeronautical Rates and Charges and Airport Improvement Fee at Toronto Pearson
Adjustments will generate revenue for the operation of Toronto Pearson, including increasing passenger services and investments in infrastructure and restoration projects that drive a better passenger experience

TORONTO, Sept. 28, 2022 /CNW/ – The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) will increase the aeronautical rates and the airport improvement fee (AIF) on January 1, 2023. These increases are a result of the high inflationary environment and ongoing impacts from COVID-19. The adjustment to the AIF will put Toronto Pearson in line with the current rates charged by other airports across Canada.
Effective January 1, 2023, aeronautical rates for commercial aviation, business aircraft and general aviation aircraft will increase by 4 per cent. The AIF for departing passengers will increase by $5; whereas the fees charged for connecting passengers will increase by $1.
The impacts of the pandemic both on the global air travel industry and on Pearson have been significant, with the airport having added significant debt to its balance sheet to remain operational over the last two years.
The revenue generated will support the operation of Toronto Pearson, including:
- The installation of new inbound baggage carrousels, including the upgrade of 29,000 metres of baggage handling conveyor belts and a new robotic baggage storage and retrieval system in Terminal 3;
- More cleaning and passenger service providers to respond to rising demand for air travel;
- Renovations to airport amenities across both terminals, including a refresh of washrooms and customs clearance areas;
- A major restoration of roofing in Terminal 3;
- Refurbishing escalators and moving walkways while augmenting systems with advanced technologies, such as a pilot of autonomous vehicles;
- Doubling the investment in the annual airport asset restoration program;
- Increasing staff for maintenance and administration activities.
“Airport operations have improved significantly since the summer, but Toronto Pearson is still feeling the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a not-for-profit entity, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that we have sufficient revenues to maintain and invest in a world-class facility to provide our valued passengers with an experience that is appropriate for Canada’s largest airport,” says Deborah Flint, President and CEO, GTAA.
About the Greater Toronto Airports Authority
The Greater Toronto Airports Authority is the operator of Toronto – Lester B. Pearson International Airport, Canada’s largest airport and a vital connector of people, businesses and goods. In recognition of its Healthy Airport program, ACI has also awarded Toronto Pearson the “Best hygiene measures in North America” award for two years running, and Toronto Pearson was the first Canadian airport to receive ACI’s global health accreditation for its response to COVID-19.

Toronto Pearson achieves Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 4 in recognition of its dedication to reducing carbon emissions

Airport is working towards net zero emissions by 2050
TORONTO, Sept. 23, 2022 /CNW/ – Today, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), operator of Toronto Pearson, announced a major milestone in its environmental sustainability goals. The airport has received Level 4 – Transformation designation through Airports Council International’s (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. The GTAA is one of the first Canadian airports to receive Level 4 certification.

ACA is the only global, airport-specific carbon standard which relies on internationally recognized methodologies. It independently assesses and recognizes the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions through six levels of certification: Mapping, Reduction, Optimization, Neutrality, Transformation and Transition.
The GTAA has long been a leader in environmental sustainability, proactively putting in place a program to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2009. That strategy resulted in significant GHG reductions by 2020, earning it an Environmental Award in the Environmental Management System category from ACI.
In 2021, the GTAA released an Environmental Policy that includes a commitment to achieve net zero Scope 1 & 2 emissions (GHGs from assets owned and operated by the GTAA) by 2050. To do this, the airport is incorporating environmental considerations into all airport operations and capital projects.
“This designation from ACA reinforces that we’re on the right path towards reducing GHG emissions,” says Pat Neville, Vice-President, Airport Development and Technical Services, GTAA. “We’re very proud of the hard work our teams are doing to find innovative ways to cut down on carbon emissions, but we know there is more that can be done. We’ll continue to find ways to decrease emissions and will work towards achieving the next designation from ACA.”
