  • A New Era in Long-Haul: Air Canada to Acquire Airbus A350-1000 Widebody Aircraft to Support International Network Growth

    • Airline confirms an order for eight aircraft, with rights to purchase eight more
    • First delivery of this state-of-the-art aircraft is expected in 2030
    • Aircraft unlocks a new generation of long-haul capabilities
    • Cabin design provides better experience for customer comfort

MONTRÉAL, Feb. 11, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Air Canada today announced the next phase of its fleet modernization program with the addition of the Airbus A350-1000 widebody aircraft. The airline will welcome eight aircraft to its fleet, and has rights to purchase eight other A350-1000s, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the second half of 2030.

“Air Canada’s acquisition of the Airbus A350-1000 will further solidify our position as a leading global airline through the next decade. This state-of-the-art aircraft adds a new dimension to Air Canada’s long-haul capabilities, with impressive range, enhanced payload, and proven economics that unlock new possibilities for long-haul flying for our customers,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, and President of Cargo at Air Canada. “These highly capable aircraft complement our existing fleet by providing flexibility in support of a growing, resilient, and diversified future network. The Airbus A350-1000 will play a central role in defining Air Canada’s next era, connecting our customers, our hubs, and our country to the world.”

“The addition of the Airbus A350-1000 to our fleet is a forward-looking investment that strengthens Air Canada’s long-term cost efficiency,” said John Di Bert, Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, Air Canada. “These aircraft will deliver improved operating economics, enhance our operational reliability, and ensure we remain competitive across our global network. The aircraft’s lighter materials and advanced engines deliver meaningful fuel-burn improvements versus the aircraft they replace, supporting our financial and environmental objectives. This order is another step in the modernization of our fleet and is aligned with our capital allocation priorities and our target to maintain capital investments at or below 12 per cent of revenues.”

Powered by the XWB97 engine from Rolls Royce and fabricated using lighter weight materials, it is estimated the aircraft will deliver up to a 25 per cent fuel consumption reduction compared to the previous generation aircraft, as estimated by Airbus. The A350-1000 has a potential range of approximately 9,000 nautical miles.

According to Airbus, customers will experience the quietest twin-aisle cabin available. It is designed to be pressurized to only 6,000 feet to reduce stress on the body, minimize jet lag and deliver a noticeably more comfortable travel experience. The A350-1000 will come equipped with the latest generation in-flight entertainment screens and connectivity, as well as Air Canada’s new cabin standard, which is being introduced later this year.

    Fleet Modernization

The order for eight A350-1000s is in addition to the 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners expected to start entering service later this year. Air Canada is also set to welcome in the coming months the first of its 30 Airbus A321XLRs. Air Canada also continues to take deliveries of the Canadian-assembled Airbus A220, with 23 aircraft remaining on its firm order of 65. An additional five Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, on lease, are expected to service in 2026.

These aircraft will enter service with Air Canada’s next generation cabin design and standard, including enhanced connectivity and in-flight entertainment offerings.

  • Black History Month: Air Canada Celebrates Black Youth Journeys – Past, Present, and Future

    11 February 2026

Each February, Black History Month invites us to honour the stories, achievements, and contributions of Black communities across Canada. At Air Canada, this moment is more than a commemoration, it is a continuation of our commitment to uplifting Black youth, amplifying representation, and creating pathways that help the next generation soar.

This year, we partnered with the Pinball Foundation, co-founded 20 years ago by Michael “Pinball” Clemons and his wife, Diane, to celebrate the journeys of Black youth. Their stories reflect resilience, innovation, and courage, and inspire us to continue shaping a more inclusive, accessible future in aviation and beyond.

Earlier this month, a group of Black youth, business and community leaders embarked on a special one-day journey aboard an Air Canada aircraft – featuring an all-black crew of two pilots and three flight attendants – and travelled from Toronto to Halifax, where they visited the historic Pier 21. Called “Legacy Lift-Off”, the attendees walked in the footsteps of Black Canadian history in a place that welcomed thousands of newcomers, and also learned of the challenges and struggles the community endured.

Stories of the community’s history from Africville elders, Africville Museum Director Juanita Peters, as well as Clemons and his wife, Diane educated and inspired a room filled with business and community leaders, as well as students that are supported by the Pinball Foundation’s work.

“Black History Month is an opportunity to honour the resilience, achievement, and leadership of Black communities across Canada, and to reflect on the shared responsibility we all have in building a more inclusive future. At Air Canada, we believe deeply in the power of possibility, especially when young people can see their potential reflected at them,” said Arielle Meloul-Wechsler, Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer and Public Affairs at Air Canada. “We are proud to stand alongside the Pinball Foundation to help create pathways that empower Black youth to pursue horizons they may once have only imagined. This month, and every month, we remain committed to supporting that future leaders in aviation and beyond can rise with confidence, purpose, and pride. Their stories are Canada’s future, and we are honoured to help them take flight.”

“Legacy Lift-Off was a powerful day dedicated to learning about Canada’s history and the untold stories of Africville. From the moment we gathered at Gate D33, the energy was palpable. Air Canada welcomed us onboard with an all-Black flight crew – an intentional act of representation that resonated deeply, particularly with our youth. The theme of intentionality permeated throughout this day of reflection and fellowship. Guided by Africville elders, we listened, learned, and honoured the past while envisioning the future; a future where under-resourced youth are supported through access to education, mentorship, and employment opportunities,” said Michael Clemons.

“Most importantly, Legacy Lift-Off reminded us that Black history is Canadian history. We are incredibly proud and grateful to partner with Air Canada on this unique and unforgettable experience, where we reinforced our commitment to youth, and had the privilege of showing young people that their dreams truly can take flight.”

Air Canada’s collaboration with the Pinball Foundation aligns with our long‑standing belief that representation makes a difference – in our workplaces, our flight decks, our maintenance hangars, our customer-facing teams, and throughout the communities we serve. By investing in youth today, Air Canada is helping to create opportunities for Black youth to dream big, take flight, and pursue futures filled with purpose and potential is more than a sponsorship, it is a shared mission to create transformational outcomes for young people.

The Program consists of two grants of $100,000 each: the Healthy Futures Grant, for sport‑based programs that promote wellness, inclusion, and resilience among equity‑deserving youth; and the Accessible Sports and Recreation Grant, for initiatives enabling youth with disabilities to participate fully and confidently in physical activity. Both grants reflect the spirit of Team Canada, where sport inspires transformation, hope, ambition, and the courage to dream big.

“Launching the Big Dreams Grant Program is an incredibly meaningful milestone for us,” said Eric Lauzon, Director, Community Relations and Partnerships. “These grants are about opening doors that strengthen the health and well-being of children and youth by giving them spaces to move, belong, and grow with confidence. As Team Canada shows us time and again, sport has the power to inspire resilience, belonging, and possibility. Through this program, we are proud to support organizations that help young people across Canada discover their potential, strengthen their well-being and dream beyond limits.”

The applications are now open and must be submitted by March 15, 2026. To qualify, Canadian charitable organizations must serve equity-deserving youth, including racialized, Indigenous, newcomer, and underserved communities, or children and youth with disabilities, with a focus on inclusive physical activity. Submissions will be reviewed after the deadline, with successful applicants notified in spring 2026.

    About the Air Canada Foundation

The Air Canada Foundation, a not-for-profit organization focused on the health and well-being of children and youth, was launched in 2012. It offers both financial and in-kind support to Canadian-registered charities. Core programs include the Hospital Transportation Program, which redistributes Aeroplan points to 15 pediatric hospitals across Canada, enabling sick children to access the medical care they need away from home. The Air Canada Foundation, in collaboration with the airline, also engages directly in fundraising activities, such as the Every Bit Counts program, which encourages customers to donate loose change of all denominations on board flights or through collection containers available in Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges. The Foundation also offers continued support to major health-related causes that benefit Canadians and is an active participant in international humanitarian relief activity as the need arises. • Unifor and Air Canada open bargaining for airport and call centre agents

TORONTO, Jan. 28, 2026 /CNW/ – Unifor opened collective bargaining today with Air Canada on behalf of customer service agents, who work at airports, call centres, and provide services such as customer relations and customer journey management, across the country.

“Air Canada’s customer service agents are the backbone of the passenger experience,” said Lana Payne, Unifor National President.

“They manage delays, disruptions, and customer care under immense pressure, yet too often without the staffing and protections that reflect the value of their work. This bargaining round is about respect, safety, and fairness for the workers who keep Canada flying.”

Nearly 6,000 Unifor Local 2002 members work at Air Canada locations nationwide.

These members perform essential customer service and operational support, assisting passengers at airports, from contact centres, and through Aeroplan, with ticketing, reservations, travel changes, supporting reward travel, and helping customers navigate online transactions.

During flight delays and cancellations, they play a central role in recovery efforts by managing rebooking, connections, accommodations, compensation, and customer correspondence–often serving as the first point of contact when plans go wrong and helping restore trust after service failures.

“Our members are the people travellers rely on when flights are cancelled, connections are missed, or plans fall apart,” said Tammy Moore, President of Unifor Local 2002.

“They deserve improved wages, predictable schedules, and working conditions that allow them to do their jobs properly. Air Canada must recognize that strong customer service starts with respecting the workers who deliver it.”

Unifor has long called for systemic improvements in Canada’s aviation sector through its Air Transportation Workers’ Charter of Rights, which urges governments, airlines, and airport authorities to address chronic understaffing, contracting out, unsafe workloads, and inadequate training across the industry.

The current collective agreement with Air Canada will expire on Feb. 28, 2026.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.

These winter route expansions follow the airline’s plans announced earlier this month to launch the only non-stop flights from North America to Sapporo.

“With a comprehensive network spanning all six inhabited continents, Air Canada’s expanded winter schedule further cements our hubs as premier global gateways facilitating fast, convenient travel. These exciting new additions and enhancements are a catalyst to facilitating tourism, trade and connectivity, and deliver more compelling opportunities for our customers and Aeroplan Members to travel almost anywhere in the world to, from or via Canada,” said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, and President of Cargo at Air Canada.

Quito, Ecuador’s capital known for its rich history, will be served three times per week from Montréal, and one flight per week from Toronto, both starting in early December onboard a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with a choice of Signature Class, Premium Economy and Economy cabins. Air Canada’s flights to Quito have been designed to connect at both its Toronto and Montreal global hubs to facilitate convenient, easy travel to and from North America and Europe.

In South America, Air Canada is expanding its schedule to Brazil, Peru and Chile, with earlier starts and more frequencies on services to Rio and Lima as well as its newly-launched flights between Montreal and Santiago. Into Colombia, Air Canada’s flights to Bogota will operate onboard the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet featuring a three-cabin configuration offering the airline’s industry-recognized Signature Class cabin with lie-flat seating.

Flights from Toronto to Manchester and Copenhagen will become year-round as of October, further building scale at Air Canada’s primary global hub. Both routes will be operated onboard the airline’s newest fleet type, the Airbus A321XLR featuring the first Air Canada narrow-body aircraft to offer Signature Class lie-flat seats. These additions are enabled by the airline’s new Airbus A321 XLR base at Toronto-Pearson, complementing a previously announced base at Montreal-Trudeau.

Air Canada’s customers in Calgary will now be able to fly non-stop to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta as of December. Operated with Air Canada Rouge’s fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, featuring premium and economy cabins, free beer, wine and premium Canadian snacks for all customers, plus fast, free wi-fi for all Aeroplan Members**, flights to Cancun will be offered four times per week, with three flights a week to Puerto Vallarta.
