LONDON, ON, June 4, 2025 /CNW/ – MFC Training is proud to announce a new partnership with Western University and the London International Airport (YXU) to deliver top-tier flight training to students in Western’s Commercial Aviation Management (CAM) program.
Starting this fall, all incoming CAM Flight Option students will complete their professional pilot training with MFC at YXU, allowing access to industry-leading facilities and certification pathways.
The partnership brings MFC’s nearly 100-year history in pilot instruction to Southwestern Ontario for the first time. MFC currently operates training facilities in Moncton, Fredericton, Thompson and Rankin Inlet. Throughout its history, MFC has trained more than 30,000 pilots.
“Expanding operations to London, Ontario is a major milestone for MFC that would not have been possible without the partnership of both Western and the London International Airport Authority,” said Chris Walsh, Managing Director, MFC Training. “We’re eagerly anticipating moving into our hangar and classroom space, installing two Level 2 flight training devices, adding staff to support the operation and positioning at least 8 initial aircraft in London to start flying in September.”
“The London International Airport looks forward to welcoming the PAL Group of Companies and MFC Training as our newest tenant at YXU” said Scott McFadzean, President & CEO, London International Airport.
“Since 1929, MFC Training has been a leader in flight training across Canada. We are excited that their first Ontario location will be here at YXU. This is an excellent fit for our growing aerospace hub.”
Established in 1999, Western’s CAM program was one of the first university-level aviation programs in Canada to combine a Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies (BMOS) degree with the option to pursue flight training toward a commercial pilot’s licence. It is in the DAN Department of Management & Organizational Studies in the Faculty of Social Science.
“This new partnership strengthens Western’s mission to provide nationally competitive, industry-aligned aviation education and prepare the next generation of aviation leaders,” said Jacqueline Book, Director of the CAM Program. “By aligning with MFC Training, we’re not only expanding our flight training capacity, we’re embedding our students into a nationally recognized pilot training system, complete with modern aircraft, advanced simulation, and a direct path to successful careers in commercial aviation.”
Under the new partnership, incoming and year two CAM students will train through MFC’s Integrated Airline Transport Pilot Program (iATPL) pathway—a Transport Canada-certified curriculum designed to give students a direct route to the highest level of certification in Canada.
Western’s CAM program welcomes about 80 new pilot candidates each year, and many of our alumni are now in aviation leadership roles around the world. Graduating with the iATPL will position our students to fill the pressing, global need for pilots and other airline or aviation industry positions,” said Nicholas Harney, dean of the Faculty of Social Science.
Recognized as the gold standard in pilot training, the iATPL program includes over 500 hours of ground school and more than 252 hours of flight and simulator training. It covers multi-engine and instrument flight experience, as well as professional Crew Resource Management preparation. The program also includes turbine aircraft familiarization, and the foundational exams required for an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL).
“MFC Training is thrilled to partner with Western to train the next generation of aviation leaders,” said Calvin Ash, President, PAL Airlines, PAL Aerospace and MFC Training.
“Between Western’s world class academic programing and MFC Training’s industry-leading flight instruction, our combined offering will produce graduates with a powerful combination of aviation skill and top-notch educational background, ready to carry our industry forward for the next generation.”

London, Ontario – May 7, 2025 – For the fourth consecutive year, Airshow London has been named the Best Air Show by the 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards Contest, a property of USA Today.
Nominees for the 2025 contest were chosen by a panel of industry experts and editors from USA Today and 10Best.com, followed by the public being invited to vote daily for four weeks to determine a winner. Like previous years, Airshow London was the only Canadian air show on this year’s list.
“Being named best air show for the fourth straight year is an incredible honour,” says Holly Doty, Airshow London Executive Director. “To be the only Canadian show nominated again is already something to be proud of, but to win, thanks to the votes and voices of our fans, we are truly thankful. This recognition is a celebration of our amazing staff and volunteers who dedicate so much of their time and energy to making SkyDrive a success year after year. We couldn’t be prouder.”
This year is especially meaningful, as 2025 also marks the 10th anniversary of Airshow London under its current name – a decade defined by innovation, growth, and once-in-a-lifetime aerial performances. From record-setting crowds to international participation, SkyDrive has steadily built a reputation as one of North America’s premier aviation events.
Pioneered in 2020, the ‘SkyDrive’ format – a drive-in style experience – remains a unique innovation in North American air shows. With approximately 2,500 vehicles parked per day, we welcome between 25,000 – 30,000 guests annually. In 2024, SkyDrive welcomed over 7,000 parked vehicles (over 28,000 people) over three days to the London International Airport and hosted six demo teams, including the incredible Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows – who performed in London for the first time ever.
This year’s show will be another spectacular showcase of military aviation highlighted by Canadian participation from the RCAF Canadian Forces Snowbirds and U.S. participation from the USAF F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, the US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet Demonstration Team, the Altus Air Force Base Joint Demonstration Team, and the Ghostwriter Airshows.
“We’re incredibly thankful for the ongoing support and participation from the Royal Canadian Air Force, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marine Corps, and other organizations that draw major attention from fans both locally and from afar,” says Gerry Vanderhoek, Airshow London Director of Air Operations. “That continued support over Airshow London’s ten years has been an integral part of building the show’s reputation as one of the best military displays in Canada and the U.S. This kind of recognition, for the fourth year in a row, truly puts London, Ontario on the map as a world-class aviation event. It’s something all Londoners should be very proud of.”

London, Ontario – February 27, 2025 – Airshow London is proud to announce that last night, at the Festivals & Events Ontario (FEO) Awards Gala, they were awarded the Best Volunteer Program. The Awards Gala was held in Kitchener, Ontario as part of the FEO’s annual “Synergy” Conference.
Submissions for the FEO Achievement Awards were received in the Fall of 2024 and evaluated by an independent panel of judges. The awards recognize the accomplishments and successes of festivals and events held within the previous year, with submissions ranging from local community festivals to internationally recognized events.
Among this year’s winners was Airshow London, who stood out for their exceptional volunteer program. Volunteers are the driving force behind SkyDrive, their annual air show, ensuring smooth operations and a memorable experience for thousands of attendees.
“Airshow London wouldn’t be where we are without our volunteers; they are the true heart of our event,” said Holly Doty, Airshow London Executive Director. “From welcoming guests with a smile to handling behind-the-scenes logistics, their dedication and passion are what make SkyDrive the success that it is. This award from Festivals & Events Ontario is a testament to the incredible work they do, and we couldn’t be prouder of our team.”
Each year, more than 500 volunteers contribute their time, expertise, and enthusiasm to make SkyDrive a success. In 2024 alone, they dedicated over 9,600 hours – an approximate value of $170,000 and the equivalent of more than a full year’s worth of accumulated time.
What sets Airshow London’s volunteer program apart is their comprehensive recruitment, training, and retention strategies, which ensure a seamless and rewarding experience for both volunteers and SkyDrive attendees. The organization fosters a strong sense of community through initiatives like their annual Volunteer Appreciation Party, where they present ‘Top Gun’ Awards, recognizing individuals who go above and beyond in their volunteer roles.
As they prepare to celebrate their 10th anniversary under the Airshow London name, this recognition reinforces their commitment to excellence, community engagement, and volunteer leadership.
Tickets for their 2025 SkyDrive show are on sale now and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are sold per vehicle for up to six (6) passengers and can be purchased at airshowlondon.com.
London, Ontario – February 10, 2025 – Airshow London is pleased to announce that Peter White has been appointed as its new Board Chair, effective immediately. One major highlight was the introduction of the SkyDrive format – an innovative approach that earned recognition and praise from fans around the world and helped position Airshow London as one of North America’s premier air show events.
“We appreciate Jim’s leadership over the past ten years and are thrilled to welcome Peter as our new Board Chair,” says Holly Doty, Executive Director of Airshow London. “Jim will continue to support our success on the board as Past Chair while Peter’s proven dedication to the organization, combined with his strategic perspective, will help us continue to deliver a world-class aviation experience.”
