  • Harbour Air debuts new Vancouver-Victoria wheeled flight service

    North America’s largest seaplane airline launched their first-ever wheeled flight between Vancouver International Airport’s (YVR) South Terminal and YYJ Victoria International Airport, providing local commuters with new convenient early morning and late evening travel options.

    VANCOUVER, B.C., November 4, 2024 – Harbour Air, North America’s largest seaplane airline, today debuted their first-ever wheeled flight between Vancouver International Airport’s (YVR) South Terminal and YYJ Victoria International Airport. The seaplane airline’s new wheeled flight service provides travelers with an additional 3 daily round-trip flights Monday-Friday, and new convenient early morning and late evening flights between Vancouver and Victoria airports starting from just $99 one-way.

    With the addition of wheeled aircraft, Harbour Air is responding to increased market demand from local and business travelers for early morning and late evening flights outside of daylight hours. The airline has converted two 19-seat Twin Otter aircraft to have wheels and de-icing equipment installed, which will enable flying during inclement weather conditions thereby improving reliability.

    The first wheeled flight departed early Monday morning from Vancouver International Airport’s (YVR) South Terminal en route to YYJ Victoria International Airport. Prior to departure, a cedar brushing ceremony was performed for the aircraft by Musqueam Nation elders, followed by a Musqueam Nation traditional land acknowledgement, Harbour Air speech and ribbon cutting ceremony at the departure gate to welcome the first passengers.

    Upon arrival at YYJ Victoria International Airport, the first wheeled flight was greeted by a traditional water cannon salute before it deplaned the flight’s first passengers. Following this, a W̱SÁNEĆ Nations traditional land acknowledgement, Harbour Air speech and ribbon cutting ceremony were held at YYJ Victoria International Airport’s departure gate to welcome the first passengers flying from Victoria to Vancouver.

    North America’s largest seaplane airline expands flight offerings to include first-ever wheeled flight service launching November 4, 2024 between YVR’s South Terminal and YYJ Victoria International Airport.

    The airline’s new aircraft on wheels are in addition to its more than 20 existing seaplane flights between Vancouver and Victoria Harbour Airport. The new flights will provide travelers with flexible daily commuting options from early morning to evening, with departures and arrivals at the main airports.

    VANCOUVER, BC, Sept. 19, 2024 /CNW/ – Harbour Air, North America’s largest seaplane airline, is excited to announce the upcoming rollout of their first-ever wheeled flight service between Vancouver International Airport’s (YVR) South Terminal and YYJ Victoria International Airport from November 4th, 2024. To celebrate the launch, a special introductory same-day round-trip offer is available from $249 (inclusive of taxes and fees) for the first 150 seats, for travel between Nov 4 – Nov 30, 2024.

    Launching November 4, 2024 with up to 3 daily round-trip flights Monday to Friday, the addition of wheeled flights and ability to fly during hours of darkness marks a first for the seaplane airline, as it has traditionally only flown during visible daylight hours due to its aircraft operating on floats and water.

    With the addition of wheeled aircraft, Harbour Air is responding to increased market demand from local and business travelers seeking flexible early morning and late evening options previously unserved by Harbour Air. The converted Canadian-built 19-seater Twin Otter aircraft will have wheels and de-icing equipment installed which will enable them to fly in diverse winter weather and operate at airports outside of daylight hours, providing additional flight times and more choice for travelers.

  • Harbour Air Bolsters Sustainable Aviation Goals with magniX LOI

    Vancouver, BC, April 22, 2024 – Harbour Air, North America’s largest seaplane airline, today announced the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) with magniX, a global leader in electric aviation propulsion, to purchase 50 magni650 electric engines. This agreement marks a significant step towards Harbour Air’s ambitious goal of electrifying its fleet, and its commitment to sustainable aviation.

    magniX will support the Transport Canada validation of its magni650 type certificate and assist in the certification work required for Harbour Air to obtain Canadian and American STCs (Supplemental Type Certificates) for installing the magni650 on the DHC-2 Beaver, with an option to extend their support to other aircraft platforms.

    “We are excited to accelerate the adoption of electric aviation technology and further our journey towards a sustainable future”, says Bert van der Stege, CEO of Harbour Air. The agreement with magniX underscores our commitment to revolutionize commercial aviation with electric propulsion and to pave the way for cleaner, quieter, and more efficient air travel.”

    A key element to the Harbour Air electrification vision is to develop a sustainable aviation hub on the west coast, providing electrification conversions and services to 3rd parties. This agreement helps solidify this vision by ensuring the supply of electric engines for our fleet as well as our customers.

    Since announcing their partnership in early 2019, Harbour Air and magniX have been at the forefront of electric aviation. The successful maiden flight of the world’s first fully electric commercial aircraft in Richmond, BC, on December 10, 2019, marked a historic achievement in sustainable aviation. Harbour Air has since operated 78 successful test flights with its prototype.

    Vancouver for Earth Day. This marks a significant milestone in the testing and approval process for the
    certification of electric flying in Canada.

    The all-electric, Canadian-built de Havilland Beaver departed from the Harbour Air terminal on the Fraser
    River, adjacent to YVR, and landed at their Downtown Vancouver terminal.

    Stege, CEO of Harbour Air. “On this Earth Day 2023, we acknowledge the immense effort required to make a
    meaningful difference in our environmental impact. Our commitment to sustainability has inspired us to

    Harbour Air began its ePlane project in 2019 and has since been the global leader in electrifying and testing
    zero-emission aircraft. The e-plane has successfully completed 25 hours of flight time among 72 flights.
    Tomorrow marks the beginning of Harbour Air’s exciting Spring ePlane Tour, showcasing the future of
    sustainable flight throughout British Columbia. The tour kicks off with an appearance in downtown

    Harbour Air Group (“Harbour Air”), North America’s largest seaplane airline, is pleased to announce the appointment of Bert van der Stege as CEO. Effective today, Bert joins Harbour Air from the WestJet Group where he held responsibility for its low-cost carrier Swoop, as Head of Commercial & Finance. Mr. van der Stege will succeed Greg McDougall, who will assume the role of Founder and Chairman on the company’s Board of Directors.

    In his role as Founder and Chairman of Harbour Air, Greg will continue to play a critical role in the development of Harbour Air’s all-electric plane and in promoting and advocating for innovation and safety within the aviation industry.

    “Having started Harbour Air in 1982 as a two-plane operation, I am immensely proud of how the company has grown over the years” says Greg McDougall. “It has been a privilege to work with the team and build the organization into what is today an iconic Canadian company with 40 aircraft, 10 bases, and over 500,000 annual passengers. I am pleased to welcome Bert as the new CEO of Harbour Air and am confident he will successfully lead Harbour Air in its next phase of growth.     Prior to his role as Head of Commercial and Finance at Swoop, Mr. van der Stege served as the Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Halifax Stanfield International Airport and as the Vice President Commercial and Chief Restructuring Officer at First Air. Over the years, he has also held various positions with RwandAir, Arik Air, and Lufthansa Group.

    What started in 1982 with two pilots, two seaplanes, and a dream to revolutionize the aviation industry has grown into one of the world’s largest all-seaplane airlines in the world, flying over 500,000 passengers a year.     Harbour Air’s All-Electric Aircraft Operates First Point to Point Test Flight!

    The Harbour Air ePlane team is excited to announce that the first direct all-electric point to point test flight has been completed. The historic De Havilland Beaver has been completely retrofitted in 2019 to operate using 100% electricity flew 45 miles in 24 minutes.  The aircraft left their terminal on the Fraser River adjacent to YVR and landed in Pat Bay adjacent to YYJ.  This is a major milestone in the advancement of all-electric commercial flights.

    Take-off was at 0812 with ample reserve power upon landing at 0836.

    “I am excited to report that this historic flight on the ePlane went exactly as planned” said Kory Paul, Harbour Air’s Vice President of Flight Operations and one of the company’s test Pilots. “Our team as well as the team at magniX and Transport Canada are always closely monitoring the aircraft’s performance and today’s flight further proved the safety and reliability of what we have built”.

    The ePlane will stay in Victoria to support Harbour Air’s partnership with the BC Aviation Museum, who is hosting an Open House on Saturday August 20th from 10am until 4pm, before returning back to Harbour Air’s Aerospace Maintenance Facility at YVR.

    We’re Supporting Tour de Cure, and You Can Too!

    Harbour Air is proud to not only sponsor but be an active participant in BC Cancer Foundations Tour de Cure (formerly Ride to Conquer Cancer). Most recently, in 2019, our team of riders, generous partners, suppliers, passengers, and employees helped raise more than $500,000. And while we’ve made huge ‘rides’ forward, unfortunately, so too has this destructive disease.  

    So, we’re upping our game and together with our team, setting a goal of $800,000

    Since we’re looking to raise more, we know we need to do more. Our team ‘Blood, Sweat, and Cures’ consists of more than 50 riders made up of Harbour Air employees, Lymphoma Researchers, Lymphoma Cancer Survivors and instrumental BC Cancer Foundation Donors. Riders will participate in 50 km, 100 km, or 160 km rides together cycling 550 kms on August 27. We believe by doing this we can show you how important we believe the work that the BC Cancer Foundation is doing and why we need your help.     Our Goal

    Contribute to our teams goal of raising approximately $800,000 for the Centre for Lymphoid Cancer and leverage that through grants to as much as ten times.

    These funds raised will be focused on:

    • Developing accurate diagnostic tools and new treatments 
    • Tapping into state-of-the-art genomics, models, and testing to characterize the biology of lymphoma 
    • Implementing biomarker tests to better guide treatment decisions 
    • Developing a world-class training program to attract and ensure the next generations of leaders

    Harbour Air was founded in British Columbia in 1982.     You asked, we listened. Okanagan summer sun here we come!  Starting July 9th, for a limited time only, direct flights between downtown Vancouver and Kelowna will return. Sit back and relax with one-hour flights connecting directly to where you need to be. No line-ups. No hassles. All fun.  

    This seasonal service will feature one round-trip flight twice a week (Saturday & Tuesday) between July 9 and September 6. Flights from Harbour Air’s flagship terminal in Coal Harbour will land at Eldorado Resort’s marina, in front of the Mateo Hotel, centrally located just 5 km south of Kelowna’s City Centre.

    Vancouver to Kelowna Kelowna to Vancouver
    11:00 am – 12:00 pm 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
