    MONTRÉAL, October 14, 2025 – Air Canada today said that beginning December 1 it will double the frequency of The Landline Company’s luxury coach service between the Region of Waterloo International Airport and Toronto Pearson. The number of daily return trips will increase to 10 from five, giving customers more convenient options for travelling and better connection times with their onward flights from Air Canada’s global hub.

    The motorcoaches used by Landline for Air Canada are made in Canada by Prevost, a manufacturer of touring coaches based in Sainte-Claire, Quebec. Each Landline motorcoach provides a premium experience, with 36 spacious, leather seats in a two-by-one configuration. The coaches are equipped with free Wi-Fi, power and a table tray available at each seat, generous overhead storage for carry-on baggage, and an onboard lavatory. Announcements will be made in both Official Languages and the coaches are fully accessible, including a power lift for customers requiring mobility aids. Customers travelling on Landline can earn and redeem Aeroplan miles and customers are protected in the event of trip disruption.

  • Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) propels economic growth

    Economic impact has increased by 251 per cent since 2015*

    Waterloo Region – A new economic impact study confirms that the Region of Waterloo International Airport is a vital economic engine for Waterloo Region and beyond. Prepared by InterVISTAS, the study examined the economic impact generated by the airport’s operations and associated activities in 2023. The report measured the economic impact generated by YKF airport and airport related businesses (direct), supplying and supporting industries (indirect) and employee spending in the economy (induced).

    Key findings of the report show that YKFs total 2023 annual operations generated:

    • $390 million in total economic output
    • 1,360 jobs and $100 million in wages, including 660 jobs at YKF
    • $170 million in Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
    • $28 million in tax revenue (local, provincial and federal)

    “This study confirms the importance of YKF as a key economic driver of local and regional employment, tourism, trade, and economic growth,” said Colleen James, Chair of the Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development Committee and Regional Councillor. “Our continued investment in YKF and our local aviation and aerospace sector helps our community attract more investment, create jobs, stimulate local businesses and support the country’s manufacturing supply chain – all of which are more critical than ever.”

    YKF is home to 44 businesses in various aviation related businesses, including air carriers, flight operations, government, manufacturing, ground transportation, construction and food and retail.  The largest airline partner, Flair Airlines directly employs flight attendants, pilots, and mechanics, and indirectly employs passenger agents and baggage handlers.

    Given the labour shortages affecting the aviation industry, the value of supporting the development of aviation professionals is top of mind. Nearly 20 per cent of total commercial pilot licenses in Canada are graduates of the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre at YKF.

    TSB releases investigation report into 2022 runway overrun of Boeing 737 in Kitchener, Ontario

    Richmond Hill, Ontario,   — 

    The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has released its investigation report (A22O0161) on the 2022 runway overrun of a Flair Airlines Boeing 737-800 at the Region of Waterloo International Airport in Ontario. There were no injuries.

    On November 25, 2022, the aircraft departed from Vancouver, British Columbia, with an inoperative left engine thrust reverser. There were six crew and 134 passengers on board. During the landing approach, the captain left the engine autothrottle engaged after disengaging the autopilot. Shortly before landing, the captain intended to disengage the autothrottle, but inadvertently pressed the takeoff/go-around (TO/GA) switch. This caused the autothrottle to command an increase in engine thrust. The TO/GA cockpit indications went unnoticed, as the flight crew’s primary focus was outside the flight deck.

    The captain held both thrust levers at idle during the landing flare. After touchdown, the captain removed his hand from the left thrust lever to activate the right engine thrust reverser. With the aircraft still in go-around mode, the right engine was producing reverse thrust and the left engine began advancing towards maximum thrust, deactivating the automatic systems that help stop the aircraft and causing control difficulties. The captain managed to stay on the runway and used manual braking to slow down; however, there was insufficient runway remaining on which to stop, and the aircraft overran the runway by approximately 500 feet.

    The investigation found that there were several factors which contributed to the inadvertent press of the TO/GA switch and the undetected flight mode change. These include pilot fatigue, the attention of both pilots focused outside the aircraft during the flare and landing, and that the aircraft systems did not provide visual and aural cues that were noticeable enough by the flight crew to indicate the inadvertent mode change during that phase of flight.

    A defect with the aircraft’s left thrust reverser was first reported in May 2022, over six months before the occurrence, and 22 subsequent reports provided an opportunity to troubleshoot the problem. Despite this, the defect did not meet the regulatory definition of a recurring defect, thus, Flair’s maintenance control software did not identify it as such. If the underlying issue behind a persistent maintenance defect is not addressed in a timely manner, there is a risk that it may compound, resulting in a serious consequence.

    Following the occurrence, Flair Airlines modified its operating procedures to better support the existing requirement to disengage both the autopilot and autothrottle at the same time.

    With today’s launch of its new motorcoach service in collaboration with The Landline Company, Air Canada is connecting the Hamilton and the Region of Waterloo airports to Toronto Pearson. Customers can now create a single itinerary when booking travel with Air Canada from Waterloo Region or Hamilton through Toronto to any destination. The service includes a high-end motorcoach service connecting with Air Canada flights, offering a smooth and hassle-free travel experience. This integrated service is a trial initiative from John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport and the Region of Waterloo International Airport, with the potential to make it available elsewhere in Canada in the future.

    How it works

    Landline will operate six, non-stop round trips daily to Toronto Pearson from each of the Hamilton and Region of Waterloo airports in southern Ontario. Air Canada customers beginning their journey at Hamilton or Region of Waterloo airports will check in as normal for their flight and obtain boarding passes for all segments of their trip. At a designated departure point at the local airport, they will board a luxury, Air Canada-branded motorcoach and their checked baggage will be loaded. Upon arrival at Toronto Pearson, customers will proceed directly with their bags to the departure level.

    In the event of coach or flight delays, customers travelling on Landline will be automatically rebooked like customers travelling on air-only itineraries.  Members of Air Canada’s Aeroplan program will earn points for both ground and air segments, as on any normal connecting flight itinerary. Each Landline motorcoach provides a premium experience, with 36 spacious, leather seats in a two-by-one configuration. The coaches are equipped with free WiFi, power and a table tray available at each seat, generous overhead storage for carry-on baggage, and an onboard lavatory. Announcements will be made in both Official Languages and the coaches are fully accessible, including a power lift for customers requiring mobility aids.

  • Passenger numbers soar at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF)

    Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) had another record-breaking year in 2023. In total, 445,312 passengers travelled through YKF, an 18.39 per cent increase over 2022.

    YKF continues to be the fastest-growing airport in Canada and consistently ranks as one of the top 20 busiest airports in the country. The success of commercial service has increased passengers and that growth is directly funding the expansion of the airport’s facilities.

    “It is wonderful to see more residents using our airport to explore destinations and connect with family and friends,” said Karen Redman, Chair of the Region of Waterloo. “This increased growth reinforces our work on the 20-Year Airport Master Plan which guides development at YKF. The airport is a key piece of infrastructure and an economic driver for Waterloo Region.”

    The current airport expansion project will enable YKF to support up to one million passengers per year – with no additional operating costs to get there. In 2023, phase two of the expansion reconfigured the air terminal building to provide an enhanced passenger experience. The project included self-service kiosks and common-use airline counters to improve check-in. A third security line that speeds passenger screening and, a new baggage system, with self-service bag drop and expanded sort area to streamline baggage handling. In addition, the airport constructed a domestic arrivals building and expanded the departure lounge in 2022.

    Phase three of the expansion is currently underway with Airport Administration relocated to the Airport Operations Centre. The second-floor terminal offices will soon house the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) while the existing main floor CBSA space becomes a Primary Inspection Line for passengers returning to Canada.

    Flair Airlines, Sunwing and WestJet provide scheduled air service to Calgary, Cancun, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Orlando Sanford, Puerto Vallarta, Punta Cana, Vancouver and Varadero.
